Diabetic retinopathy affects millions of working-age people worldwide. Of the countries in Latin America, Brazil has the highest incidence of cases. Diabetic retinopathy is detected through images of the fundus that contain lesions such as hard exudates, soft exudates, microaneurysms, and hemorrhages. Early identification of these lesions prevents the progression of the disease, which leads to a decrease in visual capacity. In addition, the early identification of these lesions allows the screening of patients who need priority care. The detection of these lesions occurs through the processing and analysis of fundus images using deep learning models. In this work, we present a new method that uses the You Only Learn One Representation with Cross Stage Partial Network (YOLOR-CSP) architecture combined with the Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) framework to detect lesions. The proposed method was trained, adjusted, and evaluated using the Dataset for Diabetic Retinopathy (DDR) and the Indian Diabetic Retinopathy Image Dataset (IDRiD). The proposed method obtained in the data set DDR mAP equal to 38.08%, in the validation set, and 22.25% in the test set with SGD optimizer. The presented results were superior in the detection of eye fundus lesions in comparison with similar works found in the state-of-the-art literature.

We introduce Cell2Sentence (C2S), a novel method to directly adapt large language models to a biological context, specifically single-cell transcriptomics. By transforming gene expression data into "cell sentences," C2S bridges the gap between natural language processing and biology. We demonstrate cell sentences enable the fine-tuning of language models for diverse tasks in biology, including cell generation, complex cell-type annotation, and direct data-driven text generation. Our experiments reveal that GPT-2, when fine-tuned with C2S, can generate biologically valid cells based on cell type inputs, and accurately predict cell types from cell sentences. This illustrates that language models, through C2S fine-tuning, can acquire a significant understanding of single-cell biology while maintaining robust text generation capabilities. C2S offers a flexible, accessible framework to integrate natural language processing with transcriptomics, utilizing existing models and libraries for a wide range of biological applications.

In this study, selective area growth (SAG)s of AlGaN/GaN nanowires (NWs) on miscut N-polar GaN templates were studied and compared with that grown on Ga-polar templates using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The SAG of N-polar AlGaN/GaN NWs demonstrated higher growth rate and more growth selectivity than that of Ga-polar AlGaN/GaN NWs. Additionally, lateral growth rate of N-polar NWs was significantly lower than Ga-polar NWs. Compared to the pyramidal shaped top surfaces of Ga-polar NWs, the N-polar GaN NWs had flat head top surfaces. The combination of higher growth selectivity, larger growth window, negligible lateral growth, and flat head, makes N-polar (Al,Ga)N NWs attractive for a variety of applications including UV LEDs and detectors as well as quantum sensing. © 2022, The Authors. This working-in-progress paper aims to present a three-dimensional reconstruction using aerial images in different environments. The experiments were conducted with aircraft in both external and internal settings, starting with image acquisition, followed by the application of specific photogrammetry software—both commercial and open-source—and concluding with a qualitative evaluation of the results.

This research study presents an algorithmic approach for the detection and identification of key components on license plates, including numerical digits, province codes, vehicle colors, and vehicle makes and types. The methodology integrates image processing techniques and deep learning methodologies to achieve comprehensive image analysis. The algorithm incorporates image preprocessing techniques to optimize the input images, followed by a deep neural network trained on a large annotated dataset. The algorithm utilizes image segmentation and character recognition techniques to detect and classify numerical digits on license plates. Similarly, it employs segmentation and classification processes for identifying province codes, vehicle colors, makes, and types. Extensive training ensures the algorithm's accuracy and robustness under varying conditions. The proposed algorithm demonstrates the potential for accurate license plate component detection and identification, with applications in law enforcement and traffic monitoring systems.

This article aims to compare forecasting techniques with machine learning techniques for predicting the number of people injured in road accidents using data from the Injury Information Collaboration Center, Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health Outpatient Files (OPD) spanning the years 2018 to 2022. The four machine-learning techniques examined in this study include Decision Tree Regression, Random Forest Regression, Support Vector Regression, and Multiple Linear Regression. The data analysis was performed using the R programming language. The results revealed that the Decision Tree Regression technique yielded the most accurate predictions for the number of road traffic injuries, as evidenced by its lowest values of MAE, MSE, and RMSE.

In this work, we report the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(2) for epsilon phase Gallium Oxide (ϵ-Ga2O3) thin film on sapphire. ϵ-Ga2O3 exhibits hexagonal P63mc space group symmetry, which is a non-centrosymmetric structure with non-zero second order susceptibility. By focusing a pulsed laser beam on to a polished ϵ-Ga2O3 thin film, we collected the generated second harmonic photons with an ultra-sensitive femtowatt photodetector, obtaining effective second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of χ(2) = 4.89×10-3 pm/V at wavelength of 800 nm. Two different measurement systems collecting reflected and transmitted photons were applied separately to make the result more convincing. The wavelength dependence from 790 nm to 900 nm and polarization dependence from TM mode to TE mode were measured as well. These results will be helpful for the design and fabrication of Ga2O3 based integrated photonics platform in the infrared-visible spectral range. © 2022 IEEE.

We consider the problem of Bayesian estimation of static parameters associated to a partially and discretely observed diffusion process. We assume that the exact transition dynamics of the diffusion process are unavailable, even up-to an unbiased estimator and that one must time-discretize the diffusion process. In such scenarios it has been shown how one can introduce the multilevel Monte Carlo method to reduce the cost to compute posterior expected values of the parameters for a pre-specified mean square error (MSE);see [12]. These afore-mentioned methods rely on upon the Euler-Maruyama discretization scheme which is well-known in numerical analysis to have slow convergence properties. We adapt stochastic Runge-Kutta (SRK) methods for Bayesian parameter estimation of static parameters for diffusions. This can be implemented in high-dimensions of the diffusion and seemingly under-appreciated in the uncertainty quantification and statistics fields. For a class of diffusions and SRK methods, we consider the estimation of the posterior expectation of the parameters. We prove that to achieve a MSE of O(ϵ2), for ϵ > 0 given, the associated work is O(ϵ−2). Whilst the latter is achievable for the Milstein scheme, this method is often not applicable for diffusions in dimension larger than two. In recent years, deceptive content such as fake news and fake reviews, also known as opinion spams, have increasingly become a dangerous prospect for online users. Fake reviews have affected consumers and stores alike. Furthermore, the problem of fake news has gained attention in 2016, especially in the aftermath of the last U.S. presidential elections. Fake reviews and fake news are a closely related phenomenon as both consist of writing and spreading false information or beliefs. The opinion spam problem was formulated for the first time a few years ago, but it has quickly become a growing research area due to the abundance of user‐generated content. It is now easy for anyone to either write fake reviews or write fake news on the web. The biggest challenge is the lack of an efficient way to tell the difference between a real review and a fake one; even humans are often unable to tell the difference. In this paper, we introduce a new n‐gram model to detect automatically fake contents with a particular focus on fake reviews and fake news.
