Designed to Delay Tolerant Networks, the Cultural Greedy GrAnt (CGrAnt) routing protocol uses Ant Colony Optimization to represent the population space of a Cultural Algorithm. CGrAnt aims to improve the message forwarding by analyzing the network characteristics based on three distinct knowledge: Domain, History, and Situational. The Domain knowledge plays a central role in the CGrAnt operation as it provides a good balance between search space exploration (through the selection of new solutions) and exploitation (through the selection of previously found solutions). This work proposes alternative metrics to be used by the Domain knowledge of CGrAnt. Results show that the new proposed metrics increase the CGrAnt performance.

Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. We present a constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, derived from measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization B-modes with "delensing," whereby the uncertainty on r contributed by the sample variance of the gravitational lensing B-modes is reduced by cross-correlating against a lensing B-mode template. This template is constructed by combining an estimate of the polarized CMB with a tracer of the projected large-scale structure. The large-scale-structure tracer used is a map of the cosmic infrared background derived from Planck satellite data, while the polarized CMB map comes from a combination of South Pole Telescope, Bicep/Keck, and Planck data. We expand the Bicep/Keck likelihood analysis framework to accept a lensing template and apply it to the Bicep/Keck data set collected through 2014 using the same parametric foreground modelling as in the previous analysis. From simulations, we find that the uncertainty on r is reduced by ∼ 10%, from σ(r)= 0.024 to 0.022, which can be compared with a ∼ 26% reduction obtained when using a perfect lensing template or if there were zero lensing B-modes. Glycerol is an inevitable byproduct of biodiesel production that has become an attractive carbon source for fermentation processes due to its availability, low price and high degree of reduction. This study demonstrated the potential of utilising the glycerol surplus through conversion to ethanol. In this work, glycerol was used as a feedstock for ethanol batch fermentation process by Enterobacter aerogenes, under pH 7.0 and 30oC. E aerogenes favored oxidative-over reductive pathways and yielded the ethanol as a main fermentative product. The profiles of glycerol utilization rate, ethanol production rate, and specific growth with respect to the glycerol concentration and the ethanol production were similar for both types of the glycerol. Substrate inhibitory effect was found at 40 g L-1 initial glycerol concentration. Impurities in the crude glycerol posed no negative impact to E aerogenes, and apparently raised the ethanol concentration and yield by 32 and 21% compared those with the pure glycerol fermentation at the optimum glycerol concentration. The highest ethanol production was 204 mM on 25 g L-1 crude glycerol. The current findings showed the potential application of E aerogenes in a large scale ethanol production from the crude glycerol. We aim at dimensioning fixed broadband microwave wireless networks under unreliable channel conditions. As the transport capacity of microwave links is prone to variations due to, e.g., weather conditions, such a dimensioning requires special attention. It can be formulated as the determination of the minimum cost bandwidth assignment of the links in the network for which traffic requirements can be met with high probability, while taking into account that transport link capacities vary depending on channel conditions. The proposed optimization model represents a major step forward since we consider dynamic routing. Experimental results show that the resulting solutions can save up to 45% of the bandwidth cost compared to the case where a bandwidth over-provisioning policy is uniformly applied to all links in the network planning. Comparisons with previous work also show that we can solve much larger instances in significantly shorter computing times, with a comparable level of reliability.

The Winter Colloquium on the Physics of Quantum Electronics (PQE) has been a seminal force in quantum optics and related areas since 1971. It is rather mindboggling to recognize how the concepts presented at these conferences have transformed scientific understanding and human society. In January, 2017, the participants of PQE were asked to consider the equally important prospects for the future, and to formulate a set of questions representing some of the greatest aspirations in this broad field. The result is this multi-authored paper, in which many of the world's leading experts address the following fundamental questions: (1) What is the future of gravitational wave astronomy? (2) Are there new quantum phases of matter away from equilibrium that can be found and exploited-such as the time crystal? (3) Quantum theory in uncharted territory: What can we learn? (4) What are the ultimate limits for laser photon energies? (5) What are the ultimate limits to temporal, spatial, and optical resolution? (6) What novel roles will atoms play in technology? (7) What applications lie ahead for nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond? (8) What is the future of quantum coherence, squeezing, and entanglement for enhanced superresolution and sensing? (9) How can we solve (some of) humanity's biggest problems through new quantum technologies? (10) What new understanding of materials and biological molecules will result from their dynamical characterization with free electron lasers? (11) What new technologies and fundamental discoveries might quantum optics achieve by the end of this century? (12) What novel topological structures can be created and employed in quantum optics?
