We investigate the problem of automatically constructing efficient representations or basis functions for approximating value functions based on analyzing the structure and topology of the state space. In particular, two novel approaches to value function approximation are explored based on automatically constructing basis functions on state spaces that can be represented as graphs or manifolds: one approach uses the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, in effect performing a global Fourier analysis on the graph; the second approach is based on diffusion wavelets, which generalize classical wavelets to graphs using multiscale dilations induced by powers of a diffusion operator or random walk on the graph. Together, these approaches form the foundation of a new generation of methods for solving large Markov decision processes, in which the underlying representation and policies are simultaneously learned.

A well-developed pose estimation scenario suitable for low altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is proposed. By employing dual CCD cameras onboard, the instant pose of UAV can be determined without any use of expensive sensor like gyro. The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is hereafter introduced to resolve the highly nonlinear system dynamics as well as the measurement process of the pose estimation system. The only measurements recorded are those snapshots of ground targets/landmarks taken by two CCD cameras. The proposed scenario can also detect large angle rotation of UAV. Simulation is conducted via a simple case, both UAV and ground targets are stationary, to show the feasibility and applicability of the proposed scheme. Actual GPS measurement data of ground targets coordinates was recorded for UKF processing. A highlight phenomenon, implied by simulation, reveals that a sudden transition of estimation errors arises at the epoch when the UAV is experiencing a large angle maneuvering up to 180/spl deg/ per second.

One of the main factors that impede the practice of the telemedicine is not the lack of new technologies for the communication, but the lack of studies on the use of the technology already installed in the distant areas, in way to be used of a rational way. The objective of the telemedicine is to provide help to the cares with the health with quality the distant areas of the great attendance centers. Therefore, it cannot ignore the fact that these areas do not make use of point technologies for communication. Then, it is justified the need to accomplish studies that facilitate the practice of the independent telemedicine of the installed technology. Then, the objective of this work is to use as pilot an unit of remote health, contributing with a support system that allows the practice of the telemedicine using the technology of available transmission in the respective place, avoiding that the factor cost is a barrier for the telemedicine projects and can begin an improvement process in the quality of the attendance in units of distant health of the great centers of medical attendance.

Traditional security systems are not easily scalable and can become single points of failure or performance bottlenecks when used on a large-scale distributed system such as the Internet. This problem occurs also when using a public key infrastructure (PKI) with a hierarchical thrust model. SDSI/SPKI is a PKI that adopts a more scalable trust paradigm, which is focused on the client and based on authorization chains. However, the task of locating the chain that links a client to a server is not completely addressed by SDSI/SPKI. Aiming to overcome this limitation, the paper proposes extensions to the SDSI/SPKI authorization and authentication model. The proposed approach introduces the concept of Federation Webs, which allows the client to build new authorization chains linking it to a server when a direct path does not exist. A prototype implementation of this proposal has shown promising results.
