Introduction: Surgery requires dedicated pre-, intra-, and post-operative care. The distance traveled by patients to undergo surgery may affect this care, impacting postoperative outcomes. We aimed to determine whether longer travel time is associated with increased rates of postoperative complications in a broad surgical population. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of one health care system's American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement program data, 2012-2018. Patient addresses were used to calculate driving time to their surgical center using Google Maps. Patients were grouped into local (≤1 h) and distant (>1 h) travel cohorts. Unadjusted and risk-adjusted outcomes were compared using multiple logistic regression with outcomes as the dependent variables and travel cohort and the 28 nonlaboratory preoperative National Surgical Quality Improvement program variables as independent variables. Results: Of 34,525 patients, 18.0% were in the distant travel cohort, were older, had higher rates for 13 of 18 comorbidities, higher American Society of Anesthesiologists class, were more functionally dependent, and more frequently underwent inpatient and more complex surgery. These patients had higher unadjusted rates of overall morbidity, respiratory complications, infections, urinary tract infections, cardiac complications, strokes, bleeding complications, unplanned readmissions, nonhome discharge, and longer length of stay (all P < 0.05). After risk adjustment, overall morbidity, bleeding complications requiring transfusion, and length of stay remained significantly higher in patients traveling longer, while venous thromboembolism and nonhome discharge were significantly lower. Conclusions: After risk adjustment, longer patient travel was associated with slightly higher overall postoperative morbidity, bleeding complications, and longer length of stay in a broad surgical population. A quantum internet is an emerging quantum information technology, possibly becoming a pinnacle of wide-area distributed system allowed under the laws of physics. The current expansion of quantum technologies would lead to innumerable types of quantum systems, composed of various kinds of quantum devices connected by a dedicated quantum network. However, the (inter)connectivity offered by a quantum internet should ideally be agnostic of the technologies used by each component system. Furthermore, concurrent progresses of the quantum technologies complicate the task of defining what a quantum internet is. In this paper, we adopt a backcasting approach to elucidate what a quantum internet should be. We begin by discussing what we believe to be the requirements of an ultimate distributed quantum system, from which we explain what role a quantum internet would play in achieving this ultimate system. We then lead to more practical requirements on a quantum internet, considering the known and expected constraints in designing a quantum internet. We also organize and categorize the relationship among known quantum network technologies and services relevant to a quantum internet. We hope this document to lay a common ground for all the key stakeholders of a quantum internet, including researchers, industrial enterprises, and policy makers and regulators.

Sasirangan cloth is one of the traditional cloths owned by Indonesia and is a typical cloth originating from the province of South Kalimantan. This Sasirangan cloth has many motifs and is unique. Sasirangan cloth is also one of the potentials that can attract local and foreign tourists to visit South Kalimantan. However, in recent years, tourist visits to South Kalimantan have decreased due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then it also has an impact on the delay in the implementation of the Banjarmasin Sasirangan Festival which is usually held annually. The next impact is a decrease in turnover and interest in shopping for Sasirangan cloth, so that employees who work for Sasirangan cloth craftsmen are dismissed and reduce people's income. So the purpose of this study is to report the results of the development of a Virtual Reality Game application called VR-SasiranganKu by integrating the interaction of Non-Player Character (NPC) behavior with the type of narrative in the simulation genre game. VR-SasiranganKu is recommended to introduce and at the same time promote Sasirangan cloth to users, then justify the reaction to knowledge and shopping experience, and evaluate user experience using the UX Honeycomb method. Respondents involved as many as 100 people who are local and national tourists. The results show that the interaction of NPC behavior can provide good direction to users regarding the introduction of Sasirangan cloth by presenting an appropriate interaction design based on the narrative and the theme of the NPC that has been adopted, the results of justification using VR-SasiranganKu can provide knowledge reaction and very good shopping experience, and based on user experience evaluation that VR-SasiranganKu has adopted a very good UX with an average score of 4.91.

With the successful development of artificial intelligence (AI), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) occupy a large amount of computing time and power consumption in the entire AI computing process. However, in traditional von Neumann architectures, the separation of the computing element and memory leads to the memory-wall problem of memory data transmission bandwidth from memory to processing element when executing multiply-accumulate-based CNN operations. The data transmission time and power consumption all are much higher than the CNN computing part. Therefore, this paper proposes a memory-in-computation design that can flexibly adjust energy usage, achieve high energy efficiency, and support multiple operation frequencies. By controlling the switches of each memory row, unnecessary energy consumption is avoided, leading to a reduction in total power consumption by 15% to 60%. Additionally, by adjusting the pulse width, the charging power consumption of capacitors is reduced by 65% per charge cycle.

Advances in optical and electrophysiological recording technologies have made it possible to record the dynamics of thousands of neurons, opening up new possibilities for interpreting and controlling large neural populations in behaving animals. A promising way to extract computational principles from these large datasets is to train data-constrained recurrent neural networks (dRNNs). Performing this training in real-time could open doors for research techniques and medical applications to model and control interventions at single-cell resolution and drive desired forms of animal behavior. However, existing training algorithms for dRNNs are inefficient and have limited scalability, making it a challenge to analyze large neural recordings even in offline scenarios. To address these issues, we introduce a training method termed Convex Optimization of Recurrent Neural Networks (CORNN). In studies of simulated recordings, CORNN attained training speeds ~ 100-fold faster than traditional optimization approaches while maintaining or enhancing modeling accuracy. We further validated CORNN on simulations with thousands of cells that performed simple computations such as those of a 3-bit flip-flop or the execution of a timed response. Finally, we showed that CORNN can robustly reproduce network dynamics and underlying attractor structures despite mismatches between generator and inference models, severe subsampling of observed neurons, or mismatches in neural time-scales. Overall, by training dRNNs with millions of parameters in subminute processing times on a standard computer, CORNN constitutes a first step towards real-time network reproduction constrained on large-scale neural recordings and a powerful computational tool for advancing the understanding of neural computation.
