In the present study, we introduce an experimental analysis conducted over two Multicriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) classification methods that have been successfully applied to real world problems. Different from other studies on MCDA classifiers, which put more emphasis on the development of new methods, this work compares the effectiveness of two MCDA nominal classifiers under the same conditions. In such regard, we developed a customized genetic algorithm to calibrate their control parameters automatically under some different sets of reference alternatives, also known as prototypes. Moreover, the experiments we have realized so far, involving different datasets, reveal that there are still some gaps in existing MCDA methods that can lead to an improvement of the methodology for the classification problems. We understand that this sort of empirical assessment is interesting as it reveals how robust/sensitive the MCDA classifiers could be to the choice of cut-off thresholds and prototypes for distinct problems. ©2009 IEEE.

The main knowledge management challenges are to capture, store and reuse contextual knowledge generated during interactions that occur daily in an organization. In this paper, we propose an activity context-aware architecture to support knowledge management in working processes. The required features for this architecture are processing, reasoning and sharing contextual knowledge involving information about activities performed. We also present results from evaluation of our proposal — A-CoBrA — for a specific domain.

Dementias are syndromes described by a decline in memory and other neuropsychological changes especially occurring in the elderly and increasing exponentially in function of age. Due to this fact and the therapeutical limitations in the most advanced stage of the disease, diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is extremely important and it can provide better life conditions to patients and their families. This work presents a hybrid model, combining Influence Diagrams and the Multicriteria Method, for aiding to discover, from a battery of tests, which are the most attractive questions, in relation to the stages of CDR (Clinical Dementia Rating) in decision making for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. This disease is the most common dementia. Influence Diagram is implemented using GeNie tool. Next, the judgment matrixes are constructed to obtain cardinal value scales which are implemented through MACBETH Multicriteria Methodology. The modeling and evaluation processes were carried out through a battery of standardized assessments for the evaluation of cases with Alzheimer's disease developed by Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease (CERAD). © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

This work presents a hybrid model, combining Influence Diagrams and the Multicriteria Method, for aiding to discover, from a battery of tests, which are the most attractive questions, in relation to the stages of Clinical Dementia Rating in decision making for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. This disease is the most common dementia. Because of this and due to limitations in treatment at late stages of the disease early diagnosis is fundamental because it improves quality of life for patients and their families. In the last years, the area of Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) has brought about new methods to cope with classification problems, among which those based on the concept of prototypes. These refer to specific alternatives (samples) of the training dataset that are good representatives of the groups they fit in. In this paper, experiments are conducted over two prototype selection (PS) techniques employed to improve the accuracy of two prototype-based MCDA classification methods. The PS techiques investigated are based, respectively, on a customized genetic algorithm and on the Electre IV approach, whereas the MCDA classification methods studied comprise the one proposed by Goletsis et al. and the well-known PROAFTN method. The results achieved demonstrate that the classification methods are indeed very sensitive to the choice of prototypes and that the PS techniques investigated may be instrumental for leveraging their performance levels.

This paper presents a methodology based on automatic knowledge discovery that aims to identify and predict the possible causes that makes a patient to be considered of high cost. The experiments were conducted in two directions. The first was the identification of important relationships among variables that describe the health care events using an association rules discovery process. The second was the discovery of precise prediction models of high cost patients, using classification techniques. Results from both methods are discussed to show that the patterns generated could be useful to the development of a high cost patient eligibility protocol, which could contribute to an efficient case management model. © 2009, IFIP Advances in Information and Communication *** right reserved.

In recent years, the number of planned and coordinated attacks, such as DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service), has increased significantly. These attacks, also known as multistage attacks, are composed of several stages and originated from multiple sources (hosts). Traditional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSes) do not tackle adequately such attacks, mainly due to the lack of mechanisms for uniform communication with distinct security systems (e.g., other IDSes, firewalls, etc.) and for the correlation, in a timely manner, of the observed events. In a first attempt to address the aforementioned issues, in this paper we propose a solution for the detection of multistage, distributed attacks based on the creation of security oriented Web Services. The solution comprises two key components: (i) a novel language for the specification of the diverse stages that compose a multistage attack, and (ii) SECCOMPOSE, a service oriented architecture for multistage, distributed attack detection.

Long-term care facilities are currently exposed to powerful forces demanding organisational change based on synergy and cooperation. The adoption of network structures is frequently regarded as an appropriate solution to this challenge by health politics. Focusing on the concrete example of the integrated long-term care network for the elderly in the Austrian land of Tyrol, the article aims (1) to explore which criteria the lawgiver formulated for the nursing cooperation structures, (2) to examine which targets and functional requirements the managers of the nursing institutions involved theoretically demand from a network structure in long-term care and (3) to investigate the functionality of the network by means of an empirical study focusing on the processes at interorganisational interfaces. Merging the major findings of the legal, theoretical and empirical enquiry, structural and functional efficiency criteria are derived, which are suggested as a framework for the evaluation of integrative nursing networks. This paper examines the formation of self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) by the direct optimization of a cost function through a genetic algorithm (GA). The resulting SOFM is expected to produce simultaneously a topologically correct mapping between input and output spaces and a low quantization error. The proposed approach adopts a cost (fitness) function which is a weighted combination of indices that measure these two aspects of the map quality, specifically, the quantization error and the Pearson correlation coefficient between the corresponding distances in input and output spaces. The resulting maps are compared with those generated by the Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm in terms of the Quantization Error (QE), the Weighted Topological Error (WTE) and the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) indices. The experiments show the proposed approach produces better values of the quality indices as well as is more robust to outliers. © 2008 IEEE.

In the present work, the architecture of a knowledge-based free-text response assessment system is presented, which can assess free-text responses on open-ended questions based on text comprehension theories. Its main advantages are the facts of extending the knowledge base and assessing responses on questions of different types. It is constituted from three basic modules: The first module is the Normalization Module (NoM), which is responsible for converting free-text responses into normalized responses, as well as, converting technical text into "functional system". The second module is the Functional System Module (FSM), which depicts all entities of a technical text and the relations among them, and is presented, by the representation of microstructure and macrostructure of a Computer Networks domain technical text, according to Denhiere-Baudet Text Comprehension Model. The third module is the Assessment Module (AM), responsible for assessing the normalized responses. It is based on data, obtained by experimental studies on microstructure and macrostructure, constructed by secondary school students, during reading technical texts and responding to questions.
