The objectives of this work are to prepare and to study some properties of zinc bismuth borate glasses containing NiO in chemical formula 10ZnO: 30Bi2O3: (60-x)B2O3: xNiO, with x is the concentration of NiO, ranges from 0.00 to 0.05 mol%. The results found that the density of glasses increase with increasing of NiO concentration, whereas the molar volumes decrease. Absorption spectra were performed using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer in the region of ultraviolet to near infrared, the absorption peak was not found. Moreover, the color in CIE L∗a∗b∗ of all glass samples were also investigated. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The glass samples in bismuth borate glass matrix containing Al2O3, with the composition of xAl2O3: 30Bi2O3: (70-x)B2O3 where x are Al2O3 concentration varying from 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 mol%, have been prepared. The obtained glasses were investigated some physical and optical properties. The results showed that the densities increased with increasing of Al2O3 concentration, whereas the molar volumes decreased. For the absorption spectra, no peak in the UV to NIR regions has been observed. Moreover the energy band gap and the refractive index for all samples have been calculated. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

We experimentally demonstrate coherent amplification of probe field in a tripod-type atoms driven by strong coupling, signal and weak probe fields. We suppress linear and nonlin-ear atomic absorptions for resonant and near resonant probe via double electromagnetically induced transparency (DEIT). Combining these advantages of suppressed absorption along with temperature-or atomic-density-controlled transfer of population(ToP) between hyper-fine ground states, we can induce near-resonant amplification of probe through stimulated Raman scattering(SRS) pumped by low-intensity signal field. The increased population dif-ference of initial and final states of SRS due to increased ToP rate, together with reduced absorption at the second EIT window in an optically thick Cesium vapor, gives rise to highly effective coherent amplification. Seismic microzonation of Bandung basin from microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (HVSR)

Bandung is located on a thick sedimentary basin, which is mainly composed of volcanic rocks and the depositional remnants of an ancient lake. The high population density and vital infrastructure, surrounding by potential sources of earthquakes make Bandung vulnerable to earthquake impact. To study the seismic response of Bandung, a microzonation study is needed so as to facilitate disaster risk assessment and mitigation. The parameters which are mapped for the purpose of microzonation are the distribution of the dominant frequency (F0), the amplification factor (Am) and seismic susceptibility (Kg). We use the HVSR analysis method with microtremor/ambient seismic noise data. The microtremor data were taken from 58 measurement points from the Bandung Seismic Experiment network run from March to October 2014 in the Bandung basin and surrounding areas. The results show that the dominant peak frequency in the studied area ranges from 0.195 Hz to 7.016 Hz, amplification (A) spans from 1.6 to 11.3, and the value of the seismic susceptibility index (Kg) ranges from 0.6 to 245.6. The spatial distribution of seismic susceptibility index indicates that almost all areas of the Bandung basin have high susceptibility to earthquake hazard. The highest susceptibility is found in the eastern part of the Bandung basin that includes Bojongsoang, Rancaekek, Ciparay, Rancasari, and Majalaya, while the lower susceptibility zones are scattered in the hills and mountains around the basin of Bandung.

Epitaxial Growth Following Crystal Nucleation in Laser-Quenched Si Films on SiO2

We have investigated the solidified microstructure of nucleation-generated grains obtained via complete melting of Si films on SiO2 at high nucleation temperatures. This was achieved using a high-temperature-capable hot stage in conjunction with excimer laser irradiation. As predicted by the direct-growth model that considers (1) the evolution in the temperature of the solidifying interface and (2) the subsequent modes of growth (consisting of amorphous, defective, and epitaxial) as key factors, we were able to observe the appearance of “normal” grains that possess a single-crystal core area. These grains, which are in contrast to previously reported flower-shaped grains that fully make up the microstructure of the solidified films obtained via irradiation at lower preheating temperatures (and amongst which these “normal” grains emerge), indicate that epitaxial growth of nucleated crystals must have taken place within the grains. We discuss the implications of our findings regarding (1) the validity of the direct-growth model, (2) the nature of the heterogeneous nucleation mechanism, and (3) the alternative explanations and assumptions that have been previously employed in order to explain the microstructure of Si films obtained via nucleation and growth within the complete melting regime.

Gd2Sn2O7 and Gd2Ti2O7 have been regarded as good experimental realizations of the classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet with dipolar interaction. The former was found to adopt the Palmer-Chalker state via a single, first-order transition at TN≈1K, while the latter enters a distinct, partially ordered state through two successive transitions at TN1≈1K and TN2=0.75K. To shed more light on their distinct magnetic ground states, we have synthesized two more gadolinium-based pyrochlore oxides, Gd2Ge2O7 and Gd2Pt2O7, under high-pressure conditions and performed detailed characterizations via x-ray powder diffraction, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements down to 100 mK. We found that both compounds enter a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state through a single, first-order transition at TN=1.4K for Gd2Ge2O7 and TN=1.56K for Gd2Pt2O7, with the specific heat anomaly similar to that of Gd2Sn2O7 rather than Gd2Ti2O7. Interestingly, the low-temperature magnetic specific heat values of both Gd2Ge2O7 and Gd2Pt2O7 were found to follow nicely the T3 dependence as expected for a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with gapless spin-wave excitations. We have rationalized the enhancement of TN in terms of the reduced Gd-Gd distances for the chemically pressurized Gd2Ge2O7 and the addition of extra superexchange pathways through the empty Pt−eg orbitals for Gd2Pt2O7. Our current study has expanded the family of gadolinium-based pyrochlores and permits us to achieve a better understanding of their distinct magnetic properties in a more comprehensive perspective.

Background Skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTI) are common among military recruits, and some experience recurrent SSTI (two infections ≥30 days apart) during training. We used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to assess the relatedness of strains from recurrent S. aureus SSTI cases and their close contacts. Methods From 2010 to 2014, we prospectively identified SSTI cases among US Army Infantry trainees (Fort Benning, GA), obtaining infection swabs at the time of presentation for all SSTIs and multiple anatomic site colonization swabs at the time of presentation for the first infection. Thereafter, we selected cases of recurrent S. aureus SSTI with phenotypically concordant paired isolates (e.g., MRSA-MRSA). We also selected concordant colonization isolates from recurrent cases as well as concordant infection isolates from SSTI cases in the same training class as the recurrent case. Isolates were characterized by WGS. The number of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) differences between isolates was calculated. Phylogenetic trees were constructed to identify patterns of intra- vs. extra-host S. aureus acquisition among cases of recurrent infection. Results We identified 23 cases of recurrent S. aureus SSTI with concordant infection isolates (18 MRSA). The median (range) pairwise SNP difference for intrahost infection isolates was 15 (0–3,768); 12 (0–348), MRSA and 310 (3–3,768), MSSA. Nine (39%) were colonized with a concordant strain (5 MRSA), yielding 14 colonization isolates (7 MRSA). The median pairwise SNP difference between intrahost colonization and recurrent infection isolates was 57 (2–3,582); 5 (2–3,582), MRSA and 167 (2–313), MSSA. Infection isolates from 33 proximal cases (27 MRSA) were identified. The median pairwise SNP difference between recurrent infection isolates and that of a proximal case was 24 (1–531); 20 (1–216), MRSA and 307 (286–531), MSSA.
