Fully polarimetric radar systems are capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving in two orthogonal polarizations. Instantaneous radar polarimetry exploits both polarization modes of a dually-polarized radar transmitter and receiver on a pulse by pulse basis, and can improve the radar detection performance and suppress range sidelobes . In this paper, we extend the use of instantaneous radar polarimetry for radar systems with multiple dually-polarized transmit and receive antennas. Alamouti signal processing is used to coordinate transmission of Golay pairs of phase codes waveforms across polarizations and multiple antennas. The integration of multi- antenna signal processing with instantaneous radar polarimetry can further improve the detection performance, at a computational cost comparable to single channel matched filtering.

This paper considers the reconstruction problem in Acousto-Electrical Tomography, i.e., the problem of estimating a spatially varying conductivity in a bounded domain from measurements of the internal power densities resulting from different prescribed boundary conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on the limited angle scenario, in which the boundary conditions are supported only on a part of the boundary. The reconstruction problem is formulated as an optimization problem in a Hilbert space setting and solved using Landweber iteration. The resulting algorithm is implemented numerically in two spatial dimensions and tested on simulated data. The results quantify the intuition that features close to the measurement boundary are stably reconstructed and features further away are less well reconstructed. We show that the sequence of thinned uniform random counting measures converges weakly to the Poisson random measure. We call such measures ‘orthogonal dice’ due to their natural connection with certain counting problems and link the sizes of orthogonal dice with the primes by constructing the largest known prime orthogonal die. We give many examples of possible use of the construct of orthogonal dice in various areas of applications including gambling, cosmology, random matrices, approximation theory and circuits. The gambling example reveals for instance that fair six-sided die numbered {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} generate negative covariance in point representations of hands across players, in contrast to seven-sided dice numbered {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} that generate zero covariance and are orthogonal. The cosmology example suggests that a ‘supermassive’ orthogonal die underlies the galaxy point patterns of the Universe. The random matrix application reveals that the variance of the spectral gap of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble exhibits non-monotone scaling with thinning for the Dirac (empirical) random measure, in contrast to the orthogonal dice where the spectral gap variance is monotone. In this paper we consider Bayesian parameter inference associated to a class of partially observed stochastic differential equations (SDE) driven by jump processes. Such type of models can be routinely found in applications, of which we focus upon the case of neuroscience. The data are assumed to be observed regularly in time and driven by the SDE model with unknown parameters. In practice the SDE may not have an analytically tractable solution and this leads naturally to a time-discretization. We adapt the multilevel Markov chain Monte Carlo method of [15], which works with a hierarchy of time discretizations and show empirically and theoretically that this is preferable to using one single time discretization. The improvement is in terms of the computational cost needed to obtain a pre-specified numerical error. Our approach is illustrated on models applied to examples of Bayesian inference problems using both simulated and real observed data from neuroscience. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. This paper considers the asymptotic theory of a semiparametric M-estimator that is generally applicable to models that satisfy a monotonicity condition in one or several parametric indexes. We call this estimator the two-stage maximum score (TSMS) estimator, since our estimator involves a first-stage nonparametric regression when applied to the binary choice model of Manski (1975, 1985). We characterize the asymptotic distribution of the TSMS estimator, which features phase transitions depending on the dimension of the first-stage estimation. Effectively, the first-stage nonparametric estimator serves as an imperfect smoothing function on a non-smooth criterion function, leading to the pivotality of the first-stage estimation error with respect to the second-stage convergence rate and asymptotic distribution. Point configurations have been widely used as model systems in condensed-matter physics, materials science, and biology. Statistical descriptors, such as the n-body distribution function gn, are usually employed to characterize point configurations, among which the most extensively used is the pair distribution function g2. An intriguing inverse problem of practical importance that has been receiving considerable attention is the degree to which a point configuration can be reconstructed from the pair distribution function of a target configuration. Although it is known that the pair-distance information contained in g2 is, in general, insufficient to uniquely determine a point configuration, this concept does not seem to be widely appreciated and general claims of uniqueness of the reconstructions using pair information have been made based on numerical studies. In this paper, we present the idea of the distance space called the D space. The pair distances of a specific point configuration are then represented by a single point in the D space. We derive the conditions on the pair distances that can be associated with a point configuration, which are equivalent to the realizability conditions of the pair distribution function g2. Moreover, we derive the conditions on the pair distances that can be assembled into distinct configurations, i.e., with structural degeneracy. These conditions define a bounded region in the D space. By explicitly constructing a variety of degenerate point configurations using the D space, we show that pair information is indeed insufficient to uniquely determine the configuration in general. We also discuss several important problems in statistical physics based on the D space, including the reconstruction of atomic structures from experimentally obtained g2 and a recently proposed “decorrelation” principle. The degenerate configurations have relevance to open questions involving the famous traveling salesman problem.

The local number variance σ2(R) associated with a spherical sampling window of radius R enables a classification of many-particle systems in d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd according to the degree to which large-scale density fluctuations are suppressed, resulting in a demarcation between hyperuniform and nonhyperuniform phyla. To more completely characterize density fluctuations, we carry out an extensive study of higher-order moments or cumulants, including the skewness γ1(R), excess kurtosis γ2(R), and the corresponding probability distribution function P[N(R)] of a large family of models across the first three space dimensions, including both hyperuniform and nonhyperuniform systems with varying degrees of short- and long-range order. To carry out this comprehensive program, we derive new theoretical results that apply to general point processes, and we conduct high-precision numerical studies. Specifically, we derive explicit closed-form integral expressions for γ1(R) and γ2(R) that encode structural information up to three-body and four-body correlation functions, respectively. We also derive rigorous bounds on γ1(R), γ2(R), and P[N(R)] for general point processes and corresponding exact results for general packings of identical spheres. High-quality simulation data for γ1(R), γ2(R), and P[N(R)] are generated for each model. We also ascertain the proximity of P[N(R)] to the normal distribution via a novel Gaussian “distance” metric l2(R). Among all models, the convergence to a central limit theorem (CLT) is generally fastest for the disordered hyperuniform processes in two or higher dimensions such that γ1(R)∼l2(R)∼R−(d+1)/2 and γ2(R)∼R−(d+1) for large R. The convergence to a CLT is slower for standard nonhyperuniform models and slowest for the “antihyperuniform” model studied here. Gap Sensitivity Reveals Universal Behaviors in Optimized Photonic Crystal and Disordered Networks

Through an extensive series of high-precision numerical computations of the optimal complete photonic band gap (PBG) as a function of dielectric contrast α for a variety of crystal and disordered heterostructures, we reveal striking universal behaviors of the gap sensitivity S(α)≡dΔ(α)/dα, the first derivative of the optimal gap-to-midgap ratio Δ(α). In particular, for all our crystal networks, S(α) takes a universal form that is well approximated by the analytic formula for a 1D quarter-wave stack, SQWS(α). Even more surprisingly, the values of S(α) for our disordered networks converge to SQWS(α) for sufficiently large α. A deeper understanding of the simplicity of this universal behavior may provide fundamental insights about PBG formation and guidance in the design of novel photonic heterostructures.

Modeling heterogeneous materials via two-point correlation functions: Basic principles

Heterogeneous materials abound in nature and man-made situations. Examples include porous media, biological materials, and composite materials. Diverse and interesting properties exhibited by these materials result from their complex microstructures, which also make it difficult to model the materials. Yeong and Torquato [Phys. Rev. E 57, 495 (1998)] introduced a stochastic optimization technique that enables one to generate realizations of heterogeneous materials from a prescribed set of correlation functions. In this first part of a series of two papers, we collect the known necessary conditions on the standard two-point correlation function S2(r) and formulate a conjecture. In particular, we argue that given a complete two-point correlation function space, S2(r) of any statistically homogeneous material can be expressed through a map on a selected set of bases of the function space. We provide examples of realizable two-point correlation functions and suggest a set of analytical basis functions. We also discuss an exact mathematical formulation of the (re)construction problem and prove that S2(r) cannot completely specify a two-phase heterogeneous material alone. Moreover, we devise an efficient and isotropy-preserving construction algorithm, namely, the lattice-point algorithm to generate realizations of materials from their two-point correlation functions based on the Yeong-Torquato technique. Subsequent analysis can be performed on the generated images to obtain desired macroscopic properties. These developments are integrated here into a general scheme that enables one to model and categorize heterogeneous materials via two-point correlation functions. We will mainly focus on basic principles in this paper. The algorithmic details and applications of the general scheme are given in the second part of this series of two papers.
