Robust, broadly applicable fluid-structure interaction (FSI) algorithms remain a challenge for computational mechanics. Efforts in this area are driven by the need to enhance predictive accuracy and efficiency in FSI simulations, align with experimental observations, and unravel complex multiscale and multiphysics phenomena, while addressing challenges in developing more robust and efficient methodologies. In previous work, we introduced an immersed interface method (IIM) for discrete surfaces and an extension based on an immersed Lagrangia-Eulerian (ILE) coupling strategy for modeling FSI involving complex geometries. The ability of the method to sharply resolve stress discontinuities induced by singular immersed boundary forces in the presence of low-regularity geometrical representations makes it a compelling choice for three-dimensional modeling of complex geometries in diverse engineering applications. Although the IIM we previously introduced offers many desirable advantages, it also imposes a restrictive mesh factor ratio, requiring the surface mesh to be coarser than the fluid grid to ensure stability. This is because when the mesh factor ratio constraint is not satisfied, parts of the structure motion are not controlled by the discrete FSI system. This constraint can significantly increase computational costs, particularly in applications involving multiscale geometries with highly localized complexity or fine-scale features. To address this limitation, we devise a stabilization strategy for the velocity restriction operator inspired by Tikhonov regularization. This study demonstrates that using a stabilized velocity restriction operator in IIM enables a broader range of structure-to-fluid grid-size ratios without compromising accuracy or altering the flow dynamics. Supervised learning in function spaces is an emerging area of machine learning research with applications to the prediction of complex physical systems such as fluid flows, solid mechanics, and climate modeling. By directly learning maps (operators) between infinite dimensional function spaces, these models are able to learn discretization invariant representations of target functions. A common approach is to represent such target functions as linear combinations of basis elements learned from data. However, there are simple scenarios where, even though the target functions form a low dimensional submanifold, a very large number of basis elements is needed for an accurate linear representation. Here we present NOMAD, a novel operator learning framework with a nonlinear decoder map capable of learning finite dimensional representations of nonlinear submanifolds in function spaces. We show this method is able to accurately learn low dimensional representations of solution manifolds to partial differential equations while outperforming linear models of larger size. Additionally, we compare to state-of-the-art operator learning methods on a complex fluid dynamics benchmark and achieve competitive performance with a significantly smaller model size and training cost.

Experimental validation of multiferroic antennas in GHz frequency range

Various mechanical antennas have emerged to overcome the inherently narrower bandwidth and degraded efficiency in electrically small antennas. Among them, multiferroic antennas are expected to realize high-frequency applications and maintain their performance, even with significantly reduced sizes. However, experimental proof of such radiation from multiferroic or magnetoelectric coupling in the GHz range deserves further examination. This paper designs and fabricates a series of multiferroic antenna samples with mechanical resonances at around 3.5 and 6 GHz, and their radiation transmissions are tested at these resonances. Nickel, a magnetoelastic material, consistently exhibits magnetically induced radiation at both resonances. However, magnetic material consisting of Permalloy (Ni78Fe22), known for its much weaker magnetoelastic effects, still shows similar transmission behaviors at 3.67 GHz and enhanced power absorption at 6.42 GHz. Our results indicate that the dynamic response of magnetoelastic materials in the GHz band should differ from their response at the MHz and below bands. This evidence calls for further investigations of the source of magnetoelectric radiation. © 2023 Author(s).

Recursive projection-aggregation decoding of Reed-Muller codes

We propose a new class of efficient decoding algorithms for Reed-Muller (RM) codes over binary-input memoryless channels. The algorithms are based on projecting the code on its cosets, recursively decoding the projected codes (which are lower-order RM codes), and aggregating the reconstructions (e.g., using majority votes). We further provide extensions of the algorithms using list-decoding and code concatenation techniques. We run our main algorithm for AWGN channels and Binary Symmetric Channels at the short code length (≤ 1024) and low code rate (≤ 0.5) regime. Simulation results show that the new algorithm not only outperforms the previous decoding algorithms for RM codes, it also outperforms the optimal decoder for polar codes (SCL+CRC) with the same parameters by a wide margin. The performance of the new algorithm for RM codes in those regimes is in fact close to that of the maximal likelihood decoder. Finally, the new decoder naturally allows for parallel implementations. GLOBAL SOLUTIONS TO THE SUPERCOOLED STEFAN PROBLEM WITH BLOW-UPS: REGULARITY AND UNIQUENESS

We consider the supercooled Stefan problem, which captures the freezing of a supercooled liquid, in one space dimension. A probabilistic reformulation of the problem allows us to define global solutions, even in the presence of blow-ups of the freezing rate. We provide a complete description of such solutions, by relating the temperature distribution in the liquid to the regularity of the ice growth process. The latter is shown to transition between (i) continuous differentiability, (ii) Hölder continuity, and (iii) discontinuity. In particular, in the second regime we rediscover the square root behavior of the growth process pointed out by Stefan in his seminal 1889 paper for the ordinary Stefan problem. In our second main theorem, we establish the uniqueness of the global solutions, a first result of this kind in the context of growth processes with singular self-excitation when blow-ups are present. © 2022 Mathematical Sciences Publishers.

Eulerian method for computing multivalued solutions of the Euler-Poisson equations and applications to wave breaking in klystrons

We provide methods of computing multivalued solutions to the Euler-Poisson system and test them in the context of a klystron amplifier. An Eulerian formulation capable of computing multivalued solutions is derived from a kinetic description of the Euler-Poisson system and a moment closure. The system of the moment equations may be closed due to the special structure of the solution in phase space. The Eulerian moment equations are computed for a velocity modulated electron beam, which has been shown by prior Lagrangian theories to break in a finite time and form multivalued solutions. The results of the Eulerian moment equations are compared to direct computation of the kinetic equations and a Lagrangian method also developed in the paper. We use the Lagrangian formulation for the explicit computation of wave breaking time and location for typical velocity modulation boundary conditions.

The positron-impact excitation of hydrogen atoms embedded in plasma environments is investigated using the close-coupling approximation from the low to intermediate energy region without including any positronium formation channel, and the excitation cross sections for 1s→2s, 1s→2p and 2s→2p processes are calculated in a wide Debye parameter range. The screening interactions, described by the Debye-Hückel model, decrease the coupling matrix elements, resulting in the reduction of the excitation cross sections from a few percent to one magnitude of ten. This will alter remarkably the spectroscopy of hydrogen in intensity and position, which should be considered in the simulation and diagnostics under some specific plasma conditions.

Natural objects can be subject to various transformations yet still preserve properties that we refer to as invariants. Here, we use definitions of affine-invariant arclength for surfaces in R3 in order to extend the set of existing non-rigid shape analysis tools. We show that by re-defining the surface metric as its equi-affine version, the surface with its modified metric tensor can be treated as a canonical Euclidean object on which most classical Euclidean processing and analysis tools can be applied. The new definition of a metric is used to extend the fast marching method technique for computing geodesic distances on surfaces, where now, the distances are defined with respect to an affine-invariant arclength. Applications of the proposed framework demonstrate its invariance, efficiency, and accuracy in shape analysis. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluating the performance of machine learning models under distribution shifts is challenging, especially when we only have unlabeled data from the shifted (target) domain, along with labeled data from the original (source) domain. Recent work suggests that the notion of disagreement, the degree to which two models trained with different randomness differ on the same input, is a key to tackling this problem. Experimentally, disagreement and prediction error have been shown to be strongly connected, which has been used to estimate model performance. Experiments have led to the discovery of the disagreement-on-the-line phenomenon, whereby the classification error under the target domain is often a linear function of the classification error under the source domain;and whenever this property holds, disagreement under the source and target domain follow the same linear relation. In this work, we develop a theoretical foundation for analyzing disagreement in high-dimensional random features regression;and study under what conditions the disagreement-on-the-line phenomenon occurs in our setting. Experiments on CIFAR-10-C, Tiny ImageNet-C, and Camelyon17 are consistent with our theory and support the universality of the theoretical findings. © 2023 Proceedings of Machine Learning Research. To alleviate the congestion caused by rapid growth in demand for mobile data, ISPs have begun encouraging users to offload some of their traffic onto a supplementary, better quality network technology, e.g., offloading from 3G or 4G to WiFi and femtocells. With the growing popularity of such offerings, a deeper understanding of the underlying economic principles and their impact on technology adoption is necessary. To this end, we develop a model for user adoption of a base wireless technology and a bundle of the base plus a supplementary technology. In our model, individual users make their adoption decisions based on several factors, including the technologies' intrinsic qualities, throughput degradation due to congestion externalities from other subscribers, and the flat access rates that an ISP charges. We study the adoption dynamics and show that they converge to a unique equilibrium for a given set of exogenously determined system parameters. In particular, we characterize the occurrence of interesting adoption behaviors, including a possible decrease in the adoption of the supplementary technology as its coverage increases. Similar behaviors occur at an ISP's profit-maximizing prices and the optimal coverage area for the supplementary technology. To account for the potential benefits from offloading in practice, we collect 3G and WiFi usage and location data from twenty mobile users. We then use this data to numerically investigate the profit-maximizing adoption levels when an ISP accounts for its cost of deploying the supplemental technology and savings from offloading traffic onto this technology.
