Wavelet transforms and machine learning tools can be used to assist art experts in the stylistic analysis of paintings. A dual-tree complex wavelet transform, Hidden Markov Tree modeling and Random Forest classifiers are used here for a stylistic analysis of Vincent van Gogh's paintings with results on two stylometry challenges that concern "dating, resp. extracting distinguishing features".

Fully Polarimetric radar systems are capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving in two orthogonal polarizations. Instantaneous radar polarimetry exploits both polarization modes of a dually-polarized radar transmitter and receiver on a pulse by pulse basis, and can improve the radar detection performance and suppress range sidelobes. In this paper, we extend the use of instantaneous radar polarimetry for radar systems with multiple dually-polarized transmit and receive antennas. Alamouti signal processing is used to coordinate transmission of Golay pairs of phase codes waveforms across polarizations and multiple antennas. The integration of multi-antenna signal processing with instantaneous radar polarimetry can further improve the detection performance, at a computational cost comparable to single channel matched filtering.

We present a model based on the lattice Boltzmann equation that is suitable for the simulation of dynamic wetting. The model is capable of exhibiting fundamental interfacial phenomena such as weak adsorption of fluid on the solid substrate and the presence of a thin surface film within which a disjoining pressure acts. Dynamics in this surface film, tightly coupled with hydrodynamics in the fluid bulk, determine macroscopic properties of primary interest: the hydrodynamic slip; the equilibrium contact angle; and the static and dynamic hysteresis of the contact angles. The pseudo-potentials employed for fluid-solid interactions are composed of a repulsive core and an attractive tail that can be independently adjusted. This enables effective modification of the functional form of the disjoining pressure so that one can vary the static and dynamic hysteresis on surfaces that exhibit the same equilibrium contact angle. The modeled fluid-solid interface is diffuse, represented by a wall probability function that ultimately controls the momentum exchange between solid and fluid phases. This approach allows us to effectively vary the slip length for a given wettability (i.e., a given static contact angle) of the solid substrate.

Multiple computational models exist that leverage the idea that some codons are 'preferred' to others when producing functional proteins. In this work, we aim to address the following two questions: (i) do proteins have similar codon usage subprofiles?, (ii) if so, can they be associated to specific Gene Ontology (GO) terms? To answer these questions, we analyze two different data sets E. coli and S. cerevisiae (yeast). For both, we use codon usage profiles that have been linked to protein co-translational folding and perform unsupervised clustering. Significantly, our clusters determine biologically meaningful patterns consistent with previously published observations. Our results suggest that codon patterns have potential to be incorporated into more complex deep learning-inspired frameworks in future work to better understand and predict functional protein production in a cell. © 2021 IEEE.

Spectral embedding and spectral clustering are common methods for non-linear dimensionality reduction and clustering of complex high dimensional datasets. In this paper we provide a diffusion based probabilistic analysis of algorithms that use the normalized graph Laplacian. Given the pairwise adjacency matrix of all points in a dataset, we define a random walk on the graph of points and a diffusion distance between any two points. We show that the diffusion distance is equal to the Euclidean distance in the embedded space with all eigenvectors of the normalized graph Laplacian. This identity shows that characteristic relaxation times and processes of the random walk on the graph are the key concept that governs the properties of these spectral clustering and spectral embedding algorithms. Specifically, for spectral clustering to succeed, a necessary condition is that the mean exit times from each cluster need to be significantly larger than the largest (slowest) of all relaxation times inside all of the individual clusters. For complex, multiscale data, this condition may not hold and multiscale methods need to be developed to handle such situations.

Aligning multiple protein structures by deterministic annealing

Protein structure alignment plays a key role in protein structure prediction and fold family classification. An efficient method for multiple protein structure alignment in a mathematical manner is presented, based on deterministic annealing technique. The alignment problem is mapped onto a nonlinear continuous optimization problem (NCOP) with common consensus chain, matching assignment matrices and atomic coordinates as variables. At each step in the annealing procedure, the NCOP is decomposed into as many subproblems as the number of protein chains, each of which is actually an independent pairwise structure alignment between a protein chain and the consensus chain and hence can be efficiently solved by the parallel computation technique. The proposed method is robust with respect to choice of iteration parameters for a wide range of proteins, and performs well in both multiple and pairwise structure alignment cases, compared with existing alignment methods. © Imperial College Press.

A semi-analytical finite element method(SAFEM),based on the two-scale asymptotic homogenization method(AHM)and the finite element method(FEM),is implemented to obtain the effective properties of two-phase fiber-reinforced composites(FRCs).The fibers are periodically distributed and unidirectionally aligned in a homogeneous *** framework addresses the static linear elastic micropolar problem through partial differential equations,subject to boundary conditions and perfect interface contact *** mathematical formulation of the local problems and the effective coefficients are presented by the *** local problems obtained from the AHM are solved by the FEM,which is denoted as the *** numerical results are provided,and the accuracy of the solutions is analyzed,indicating that the formulas and results obtained with the SAFEM may serve as the reference points for validating the outcomes of experimental and numerical computations.

In the basic vehicle routing problem (VRP), a vehicle must deliver goods from one centralized warehouse to multiple customers efficiently. Several VRP variants and constraints exist, including different product types, specific delivery times, multiple warehouses, vehicle fuel constraints, and pick-up from one location and delivery to another. This work proposes and demonstrates a flexible algorithm for solving the VRP via ant colony optimization (ACO) that can address many of the variants discussed above. ACO algorithms mimic the behavior of ants, learning optimal paths to a food source and back to the nest based on stigmergic behavior. This work compares a proposed, more flexible ACO algorithm to a traditional optimization algorithm that is implemented in the Google VRP solver. Readily available data were used to test and demonstrate results. Several VRP variants were implemented in both the (proposed) flexible ACO algorithm and the Google VRP solver. The flexible ACO algorithm performed better in terms of distance traveled versus the Google VRP solver for two variants and worse for three other cases. However, the Google VRP solver was not able to solve some of the VRP variant combinations considered here and failed when solving some backhaul datasets. Because the flexible ACO algorithm was able to better handle many case variations, it may be an attractive alternative optimization tool.

In this paper, we describe a method for design of optimal finite-difference stencils for wave propagation problems using an intrinsically explicit Galerkin-wavelet formulation. The method enables an efficient choice of stencils optimal for a certain problem. We compare group velocity curves corresponding to stencils obtained by our choice of wavelet basis and traditional finite-difference schemes. Generally there exist choices of stencils with superior characteristics compared to conventional finite-difference stencils of the same size. Beside gain in accuracy, this leads to large computational savings.

The Human-Centered Internet of Things(HC-IoT)is fast becoming a hotbed of security and privacy *** users can establish a common session key through a trusted server over an open communication channel using a three-party authenticated key *** of the early authenticated key agreement systems relied on pairing,hashing,or modular exponentiation processes that are computationally intensive and *** order to address this problem,this paper offers a new three-party authenticated key agreement technique based on fractional chaotic *** new scheme uses fractional chaotic maps and supports the dynamic sensing of HC-IoT devices in the network architecture without a password *** projected security scheme utilized a hash function,which works well for the resource-limited HC-IoT *** results show that our new technique is resistant to password guessing attacks since it does not use a ***,our approach provides users with comprehensive privacy protection,ensuring that a user forgery attack causes no ***,our new technique offers better security features than the techniques currently available in the literature.
