Air particle cleaning in developing countries in Southeast Asia has become important especially regarding local respiratory health. One of possible solutions is air filtration which is normally used but at high cost Therefore, this study aims to develop low cost air PM2.5 filtration using integrated lamp, and then investigate filtration performance of adaptive lamp. The integration of fabric filter and floor lamp is designed with fan unit driving force, and then photocatalytic process is applied for increasing air purificative performance. Tests are set in 2.5 m width x 2.5 m length x 2.5 m height bedroom within three regimes: (A) existing filter, (B) integrating fabric filter lamp and (C) adapting TiO2 fiber mop to filter lamp. Based on EPA standard, no regime examined exceeds NAAQs at 35 mu g/m(3), while regime C with fan speed 2 m/s shows the best performance of air purification. Then the MERV level of filtrative lamp demonstrates MERV15 and MERV16 to identify regime B lamp with 3 m/s fan speed and C lamp with 2 m/s fan speed respectively.

Through his design of the United States Pavilion at Expo 67 and other projects, Buckminster Fuller has become a reference point for a range of contemporary approaches to sustainable development and design. By examining the Pavilion and an unpublished 1939 manuscript, "Ballistics of Civilization," in conjunction with the sociological theory of reflexive modernization, this article reconstructs the reflexive modernism through which Fuller aspired to chart a more sustainable course for humanity. While Fuller intended his "comprehensive anticipatory design science" to maximize human welfare by achieving technocratic efficiencies through libertarian and market-based mechanisms, his alignment with the armed forces and the United States Information Agency during the Cold War subordinated many of his progressive ambitions to a technocratic nationalism. This history suggests that as artists, architects, and designers draw on Fuller's legacy to reshape the ways we think and practice sustainability, we should prioritize modes of reflexivity that employ reflection and deliberation over those that automate what are ultimately political decisions.

This study reviews the design of the physical environment within a residence that is suitable for comfortable and safe elderly living. Various guidelines and knowledge are available, yet there remains a lack of knowledge that focuses on design that leads to mental happiness. This research studies and analyzes the spiritual factors affecting the living environment of elderly Thais. The study then proposes a guideline to design spiritual living environments for the Thai elderly. The population and target groups are elderly people in Roi Et, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, and Kalasin provinces in Thailand. Data was collected from in-depth interviews and a questionnaire survey. The results reveal that lifestyle changes in the homes of Thai elderly people have led to them placing importance on spiritual spaceswithin their homes. Moreover, the design of a religious space or prayer room within a dwelling is influenced by social characteristics (income and education) as well as physical characteristics (walk-mobility and smell) affecting.

This research aims to formulate the concept of public housing based on research results on natural fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material which has been done in the road map of research. Research output is the public housing design and specifications of FRP made of water hyacinths and coconut fiber. Method used is descriptive review of the concept based on references and material test which consists of density, water absorption, modulus of rupture (MOR), tensile strength, absorption coefficient and Sound Transmission Loss (STL). The entire tests of material were carried out in the laboratory of materials and construction, while the acoustic tests carried out using the impedance tubes method. The test results concluded that the FRP material may have a density between 0.2481 - 0.2777 g/cm(3), the absorption coefficient is average of 0.450 - 0.900, the Modulus of Elasticity is between 4061 - 15193 kg/cm(2), while the average of sound transmission loss is 52 - 59 dB. Furthermore, that the concept of public housing must be able to be the embryo of the concept of environment-friendly and low emissions housing.

Herman Thomas Karsten architectural masterpiece becomes objects of cultural heritage that must be appreciated, it covers town planning and architectural design. On progress, Karsten's masterpiece hasn't changed much as a result of globalization that hits Semarang city;his masterpiece is considered well, valued by the society, it is possibly because of the conceptual approach that prioritizes and blends the local aspects of wealth. Collecting data including literature study, synchronic and diachronic method, will produce a red thread ideology that influences Karsten's way of thinking. History shows, the architectural work that survives is that have the local aspect in the concept of planning. Through the literature review of the Theory of the City and Local Aspects, and by taking the case on the cities of Karsten design, there will be a relation between the Local Aspect and the Concept of Town Planning by Karsten. Case Study in Semarang city, which is also the best or the most completed masterpiece of Karsten, becomes a reference that corresponds to the literature study, so we get the scope of the local aspect that consists of Place, People and Period always related with cultural, social and economic aspect, and all of these have correlation with the town planning and architectural work of Karsten.

This paper presents new structural analysis tools based on limit state analysis for vaulted masonry buildings. Thrust lines are used to visualize the forces within the masonry and to predict possible collapse modes. The models are interactive and parametric to explore relationships between building geometry and possible equilibrium conditions in real time. Collapse analysis due to applied displacements is determined by combining kinematics and statics. The approach is largely two dimensional, though more complex three-dimensional problems are analyzed using the same methods. This paper presents a series of analytical tools that are fast and easy to use in real time, but at the same time rigorous and highly accurate. This work represents a significant improvement over traditional methods of thrust line analysis performed by hand, which are often tedious and time-consuming. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Visualizations, based on a diffusion equation model, are presented for both steady-state and transient sound energy. For steady-state sound-pressure level distributions, animations created by scanning from the primary room to the secondary room reveal discontinuous transitions of sound energy caused by a location change from the wall area to the aperture area. Animations of time-dependent energy flow directions visualize the energy flows across coupled spaces. This study also reveals a "reversal" characteristic of energy flow directions which seems to be dependent on the size and location of the aperture. (C) 2008 Acoustical Society of America
