Multi-hazard assessment for flood and Landslide risk in Kalimantan and Sumatra: Implications for Nusantara, Indonesia's new capital

Situated within the Ring of Fire and characterized by a tropical climate and high seismic activity, Indonesia is uniquely vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods and landslides. These events pose significant threats to both the population and infrastructure. This study predicts areas exposed to flood and landslide risk by considering various environmental factors related to climate, topography, and land use. The predictive performance of three machine learning models-na & iuml;ve Bayes, k-nearest neighbors, and random forest (RF)-was evaluated by comparing the AUC, RMSE, and R2 values of each model. Ultimately, the RF model, which demonstrated the highest accuracy, was used to prioritize disaster impact factors and generate hazard maps. The results identified the interaction of rainfall, land use, and slope aspect as the most critical determinants of hazard occurrence. The predicted hazard maps revealed that approximately 26.7 % of the study area was vulnerable to either floods or landslides, with 16.8 % of the area experiencing both. The new capital of Nusantara showed a relatively higher multi-hazard risk than did the overall study area and protected zones, with 22.1 % of the hazard area vulnerable to both flooding and landslides. In single hazard zones, areas classified as at risk for floods had a higher mean probability of experiencing both hazards (43 %), as compared to areas classified as at risk for landslides (22 %). As a result, urban planners and relevant stakeholders can now utilize the hazard maps developed in this study to prioritize infrastructure reinforcement and disaster risk areas, integrating land use planning with risk assessment to mitigate the impact of disasters. By employing these strategies, Indonesia and other countries facing similar challenges can now enhance their disaster preparedness and response capabilities in new capital regions and other areas, ultimately planning for more sustainable urban development.

Urban pluvial floods pose a significant risk to cities, occurring when precipitation exceeds the carrying capacity of the urban drainage network. Coupled green-grey infrastructure has emerged as a sustainable solution for mitigating urban pluvial floods. This study aims to explore best practices in the network configuration of urban drainage systems coupled with low-impact development (LID) to enhance flow distribution and stormwater infiltration. To do so, we focused on two competing key concepts in network analysis: (1) Centralization and (2) Decentralization. We integrated a one-dimensional stormwater model with a rapid flood spreading model to assess the flood mitigation performance of various centralized and decentralized network configurations in the Gangnam region of Seoul, South Korea. To further assess the combined effects of green and grey infrastructure, we compared the performance of each drainage network configuration with and without identical mixed LID practices. Here we show that the centralized drainage network scenario performed best in reducing flood volume by 40.3%, the decentralized drainage network scenario performed best in shortening flood duration by 47.8%, and the LID practices scenario performed best in mitigating peak flooding rates by 4.2%, each as independent scenarios. When all three scenarios were coupled together, flood volume could be reduced by 73.5%, flood duration by 54.7%, and peak flooding rates by 19.8% in the study area. This exploratory study underscores the potential of network analysis in urban flood research, particularly the effectiveness of loosely-connected network topology. Our findings contribute to the development of best practices for coupled green-grey infrastructure, facilitating sustainable stormwater management and urban flood resilience.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of leather shave waste activated carbon (ACLW) as an alternative for the treatment of wastewater containing linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). Batch adsorption tests were carried out (pH effect, isotherms, kinetics). The activated carbon was tested for its life cycle by desorption with solvent and it was further evaluated as real wastewater treatment for bath graywater. Under the optimum pH of 2.5, kinetic studies showed a better correlation with the pseudo-second order model, with an activation energy of 27.5 kJ mol(-1). Equilibrium isotherms correlated better with the double layer model, indicating hemi-micelle formation and performing a high-affinity isotherm. Adsorption was shown to be endothermic (Delta H-0 = + 73.89 kJ mol(-1)), entropy driven (Delta S-0 = + 0.46 kJ mol(-1) K-1), and occurring spontaneously. The use of ethanol solution was effective for the regeneration of the adsorbent. Adsorption was applied in real wastewater, removing contaminants from bath graywater, especially anionic surfactants with up to 95% removal efficiency.

On the average horizontal illuminance in rooms with one or two point light sources

To ensure high-quality lighting in indoor spaces, many objective parameters have been suggested in building codes and standards all over the world. Despite the emergence of luminance-based metrics, the average horizontal illuminance (E-av) remains popular in practice. For the case of relatively small rooms with one or two point light sources, it is often intended to determine the point with horizontal illuminance equal to E-av. It is also intended to have the computation for various room scenarios, so that the outcome can be predicted using a simple model. This study, therefore, aims to propose a method to identify the location of point of E-av on horizontal plane in cuboid rooms with various sizes, with one or two point light sources, and to further verify the theoretical concept. To achieve the objective, scenarios and assumptions are described using mathematical tools, followed with verification using grid computations and Monte Carlo simulation of 10,000 random scenarios. Logarithmic models to predict E-av value and its representative location are proposed. The room length-to-width ratio is found more influential, compared to the source luminous intensity characteristics, in affecting the location of point of E-av.

The erosion and protection of sandy coastal landscapes is happening across the globe and is prominent in the engineering, planning, conservation and design fields. Researchers and practitioners have identified a need for new approaches and forms that work with erosion instead of defending against it, and this paper is part of that effort. Situated on the western coast of Lake Michigan, our work offers insights into Great Lakes coastlands and sandy landscapes more broadly. Because the Great Lakes have widely varying water levels and are generally erosive over the course of decades, this region may also provide lessons for our marine coastlines. We combine physical and computational wave modelling with conventional means of landscape architectural work to develop a new form of coastal design and theorize that a landscape approach to the problem of erosion promises a reduction in control and better ecological, aesthetic and coastal protection outcomes over time.

This study investigates the influence of CO2 2 concentration on the carbonation process in cementitious paste, focusing on water content distribution in ordinary Portlandite cement and limestone-calcined clay cement (LC3). 3 ). Employing single-sided nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for water profiling, we revealed that under accelerated carbonation of 5 % and 1 %, the water content in fine pores (interlayer space and gel pores) kept constant at the carbonation front, demonstrating the plugging effect where fine pore water removal governs carbonation progress. This effect was absent under natural carbonation conditions because evaporation precedes the carbonation process. This study emphasizes that to accurately characterize cementitious materials under natural carbonation conditions, CO2 2 concentrations in accelerated methods should be constrained to prevent the plugging effect.

Multifunctional air filter with enhanced filtration, formaldehyde degradation, and antibacterial properties using PET, PDA, and RGO-TiO2

Currently, most air filters, such as polyester (PET) fiber non-woven fabric, only have a single function of particulate filtration. However, the removal of substances harmful to human health, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and bacteria, is becoming increasingly important in indoor air purification. Herein, based on the biomimetic surface functionalization properties of polydopamine (PDA) and the photocatalytic degradation of organic matter and the antibacterial effect of RGO (reduced graphene oxide)-TiO2, a multifunctional NWP2/PET- PDA-RGO-TiO2(P/PPRT) filter with a sandwich structure was prepared for formaldehyde degradation, aerosol filtration, and bactericidal operation. The P/PP 2 R 0.05 T 20 maintains optimal performance of photocatalytic reaction kinetics and reaches a formaldehyde degradation rate of higher than 79 % within 300 min in the 7th cycle of usage. Compared with the base subtracts, P/PP 2 R 0.05 T 20 has the highest filtration efficiency of 88.57-99.18 % for 0.3-10 mu m particles, respectively, and has a filtration efficiency of higher than 74 % for 0.3 mu m particles in the 7th cycles of usage. The quality factor of P/PP 2 R 0.05 T 20 is improved significantly due to the sandwich structure. The effect of loaded particulate on the catalyst for photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde was also studied. It was found that the photocatalytic formaldehyde degradation rate of P/PP 2 R 0.05 T 20 is about 81.8 % within 300 min under different A2 particulate load content. In addition, P/PP 2 R 0.05 T 20 has a bioaerosol removal rate of higher than 98 % against E. coli. This study provides a practical approach to preparing a multifunctional air filter with the performance of aerosol filtration, photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde, and bactericidal function using PET non-woven fabric.

Perceived discrimination, transit use, and walking behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from the Understanding America Study

A rise in reporting and media coverage of negative social interactions and experiences of racism in transit and other public environments suggests that perceived discrimination may have affected the travel behavior and health of people of color during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, to examine relationships between race, perceived discrimination, transit use, and walking behavior, we draw on data collected in 20 waves of the Understanding America Study (UAS) COVID-19 tracking survey, fielded July 2020-July 2021. Importantly, we find that transit use among minorities continued during the pandemic at higher rates, especially among Black and Hispanic respondents, despite non-White respondents reporting more frequent perceptions of discrimination. Our linear mixed-effect model results further indicate that non-White respondents were notably more likely to use transit. Examining walking behavior, we find that White and Asian respondents consistently reported more walking than Black and Hispanic respondents, even when controlling for income. Crucially, we found that in the presence of controls, while large disparities were observed in both walking and transit behavior based on race, perceived discrimination had little to no effect. While disparities in travel behavior based on race are evidently better explained by structural factors as opposed to overt, individual-level discrimination, planners, policymakers, and designers should nevertheless give greater consideration to micro- and macro-scale interventions that facilitate safe transit use and walking for racial and ethnic minorities.
