Extensive design and aerodynamic performance investigation of diffuser augmented wind turbine (DAWT) guided by generalized actuator disc theory

Shrouding a turbine boosts power, lowers cut-in speed, but raises installation costs, and limits adaptability to wind shifts. A compact, wide-angle DAWT with competitive capacity is crucial for practical installations. Small turbines, often in fluctuating wind sites, necessitate thorough off-design performance analysis. A relatively short, wide-angle GOE431 diffuser is optimized by an efficient response surface method. Inverse blade element method, combined with actuator disc DAWT CFD considering wake swirl, shapes 90 cm-diameter rotor blade with minimal iterations. Implications of Generalized Actuator Disc Theory on DAWT design and performance are addressed with three-dimensional CFD for the first time. This approach unveiled substantial room for improving DAWT efficiency and uncovered key factors causing deviations from ideal performance. Tip leakage and diffuser losses constituted 9.5% of overall energy losses, with wake rotation, blade efficiency, and blade drag at 9.2%. Tip-hub losses, finite blade number, rotor-diffuser interaction, suboptimal rotor, and turbulence contributed to 12.1% in three-bladed DAWT, reaching CP,max = 0.746, with tip losses about one-third of bare turbine. Six-bladed DAWT raised CP by 93%, from 0.417 to 0.805, achieving 75% of ideal DAWT. Finite blade number led to reduced attack angles, higher tip losses, and limited flow expansion, contributing significantly to energy losses. As blade number and design tip-speed-ratio increased, blade Reynolds number decreased, suggesting an optimal combination to minimize energy losses. At off-design, a strong connection existed between thrust coefficient, diffuser efficiency, and Cp increase in wide-angle diffuser DAWTs. Maintaining CT near CT,opt (0.786) at high tip-speedratio led to significant Cp rise.

The construction of flats is one of the steps toward fulfilling the need for housing in Jakarta and other big cities in Indonesia. This study investigated the thermal problems that focus on air movement in residential units of flats due to window dimensions that cannot accommodate the air velocity that surrounds the buildings because of monotonous window dimensions and the high elevation of the residential units. The position of the interest of this research is on the search for window dimensions that allow comfortable air movement in the residential unit. Based on these problems and interest, the pertinent issue is the design of window dimensions within the facades of the buildings according to the actual air velocity and the elevation of the residential units. The selected object of study was the Jatinegara Barat flats, a block of high-rise flats located in the middle of East Jakarta, Indonesia, which is adjacent to the river. We used a quantitative deductive methodology for the problem analysis via mathematical and simulation methods that use the Ansys R1 2020 software. The final results showed that the relationships between window dimensions, air velocity, and the elevation of residential units can be mapped horizontally and vertically by paying attention to the locations of the window openings with respect to the wind direction and building layout. The horizontal and vertical maps showed repetition of the window dimensions every four floors, with the four floors in the center of the building (read vertically) having window dimensions one-quarter smaller than the four floors above and four floors below.

The peri-urban area possesses mixed characteristics of rural and urban areas,i.e.,agricultural,and built-up *** review explains various themes and concepts of peri-urban areas and the importance of peri-urban agriculture(PUA)as an ecosystem service(ES)for their surrounding *** methodological approach is a systematic literature search and explanatory review of books and journal *** focus of the discussion is as follows:(1)quantification of review results,(2)urbanization pressures,peri-urban,and governance,(3)two different concepts about the peri-urban area,(4)protection of PUA and their resilience,and(5)role of PUA in providing ESs to other *** review shows that PUA is more crucial in urban areas than in rural areas in terms of food supply,ecology and biodiversity preservation,disaster mitigation,and *** of the primary causes of PUA loss is massive urban expansion,which entails the conversion of agricultural land in peri-urban areas into built-up ***,we suggest that every country should develop a peri-urban management *** argue that sociocultural biases in PUA have resulted in many institutional constraints on peri-urban management being incorporated within existing political and regulatory frameworks,including planning practices and longstanding laws and regulations.

Designing for Family Engagement in Neonatal ICUs: How Is the Interior Design of Single-Family Rooms Supporting Family Behaviors, From Passive to Active?

Purpose: Understand how the interior design of single-family rooms (SFRs) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) can support family engagement behaviors. Background: Family members are integral contributors to infant care in NICUs, impacting infant development. While at the NICU, parents are encouraged to participate in a process called family engagement, where they are expected to move from passive to active caregivers, in preparation for their role after discharge. While family engagement is affected by the built environment, no studies have investigated this relationship in any depth. NICU settings morphed to involve families through the SFR design model, but the interior environment of SFRs have not been sufficiently explored as a resource to support specific family engagement behaviors. Methods: We interviewed family and staff and observed family engagement behaviors in SFRs at two NICUs. Behaviors were observed and described in terms of their location, number of people, and design elements involved. Built environment characteristics were collected through physical assessments, and interviews elicited participants' perceptions about design factors impacting family behaviors inside SFRs. Data analysis followed grounded theory segments and pattern matching. Results: Three behavioral patterns and five themes were identified showing how SFRs' private bathrooms, family storage, family zone partitions, positive distractions, and information boards can support families' home-like, educational, collaborative, and infant care behaviors. Conclusions: The interior design of SFRs can be a resource to family engagement in the NICU. Future research should operationalize SFR features found in our study to measure and validate their impact on family engagement outcomes.

Slack in production planning and control: a study in the construction industry

Although buffers of inventories, time, and capacity are commonly recommended to mitigate variability in construction, they abstract away the role played by human agency. This study argues for slack as a socio-technical complement to buffers for dealing with variability. The investigation is based on two case studies conducted in construction projects that adopted the Last Planner (R) System. Data collection focussed on understanding how slack practices and resources (SPR) were used in production planning and control, and was based on observations, analysis of documents, and interviews. Findings revealed 57 instantiations of slack practices and 8 types of slack resources. Several of these SPR diverge from what are traditionally called buffers, highlighting how the concept of SPR gives visibility to a wider range of variability coping mechanisms. Thus, it is important to make SPR explicit so that managers can reflect on why SPR are necessary, understand how they relate to each other, and assess their unintended consequences. Five propositions are presented, encompassing: how to identify SPR;the variety and general- or context-specific nature of SPR;and the value of maintaining SPR. These propositions contribute to risk management in production planning and control.

Alternative gamma-ray shielding material: Ternary composite including polyester resin/barite/molybdenum

In the present study, ternary composites containing different proportions of barite and molybdenum and using unsaturated polyester resin as binder were produced. The gamma ray shielding characteristics of these ternary composites were investigated by experimental, theoretical and simulation processes to obtain reliable results. Herewith, RPE, mu, mu/rho, HVL, TVL, MFP and Zeff parameters for the prepared composites have been revealed. The experimental process was performed in the gamma-ray energy range of 276.4-1332.5 keV with the help of HPGe detector. In the theoretical and simulation studies carried out at the same gamma-ray energies, WinXCOM and GEANT4 were used, respectively. Data produced by three different methods were compared and it was seen that there was agreement between them. The mu values of the coded as BaMo50 composite are 0.4935,0.4464, 0.3824, 0.3586, 0.2908, 0.2478, 0.1799, 0.1721 and 0.1682 cm-1, respectively at 276.4, 302.9, 356.0, 383.9, 511.0, 661.7, 1173.2, 1274.5 and 1332.5 keV. It has been observed that the values of RPE, mu/rho, mu and Zeff parameters decrease with increasing gamma-ray energy and the opposite trend was observed for the HVL, TVL, and MFP parameters. The composite with the highest gamma-ray shielding capacity among all prepared ternary composites is the one coded as BaMo50.

Evaluation of daylight performance metrics according to country guidelines: The case of educational buildings in Turkey

According to the 2021 data from the International Energy Agency, educational buildings had the highest energy consumption after residential and office buildings. The number of schools affiliated with the Republic of Turkey Ministry of National Education (MoNE) is 67,125 and the number of users is over 20 million (preschool, primary school, secondary school), which is increasing daily. Providing adequate lighting and visual comfort conditions increases education quality and is favorable for health. In educational buildings, energy consumption can be saved by changing space usage with different education models, changing/transforming spaces with the re-quirements of the age, and optimizing space-related design conditions. Educational guidelines published by different institutions and organizations in various countries emphasize the importance of sustainable lighting conditions in educational buildings. In the guideline published by MoNE in 2015, it is not possible to optimize the energy required for lighting with the standardized building type according to different climate zones. Natural lighting conditions need to be investigated in detail with other issues such as space characteristics (size, furnishing, function, window size, etc.), latitude, sunshine duration, climate, direction, orientation, etc. Educational buildings, which have been produced as a uniform project in Turkey in recent years, need to be re-evaluated according to the physical and psychological needs of the users, architecturally flexible uses, building performance, and energy-efficient use according to different climate zones. This article aims to analyzing the daylighting standards in educational buildings and regulations that are applied internationally to define a set of rules that could be applied in Turkey to supplement the local legislation.

Bird feeding devices exclude unwelcome visitors. More-than-humans shaping the architecture and technology of birdfeeders in twentieth-century Finland

In this article, we investigate the evolution of the birdfeeder and analyze it as a multispecies technology, a technological artefact that has co-evolved between multispecies interactions of humans, the target species of the feeding, and unwanted visitors. We use close reading as a method to examine pictures, design descriptions, photos and text sources published in Finnish magazines and newspapers from the late nineteenth century, when birdfeeders were first discussed, until the late twentieth century, with the aim of analyzing how birdfeeder designs and models have changed in relation to various (and especially unwanted) visitor species. Birdfeeders are visited not only by species that humans want to feed but also by several unwanted visitors, such as birds, mammals, bacteria and the weather. Being inspired by posthumanism and Science and Technology Studies (STS), we ask what the role of unwanted visitors has been as co-designers of technological artefacts, here the birdfeeder. Our article discusses the broader subject of how people welcome or exclude other beings from shared environments. We argue that it is vital for environmental humanities scholars to study artefacts and technology and vice versa, for design studies and STS scholars to examine non-humans. We hope to encourage other researchers to ponder how animals, and unwanted users in general, participate in designing technology and artefacts.

The increasing deployment of industrial and service robots has created a significant demand for robotic Fleet Management Systems (FMS) to control these assets and deliver efficient and safe operations. This paper explores applications of FMS across various industrial sectors, including oil and gas, mining and agroindustry. Then, it describes expected functionalities of FMS, such as route planning, task allocation, simulation, real-time monitoring, integration with corporate systems, diagnosis, teleoperation, data analytics and devops tools. The discussion includes an analysis of current FMS software solutions, highlighting their features and industry-specific applications. The paper concludes that the continued evolution of FMS technology is critical for optimizing robotic operations and achieving strategic industrial goals, and the selection of a FMS solution should consider companies' current fleet and expectations towards its adoption.

This study presents a novel approach to integrating combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems with water desalination for enhanced energy and water management in educational buildings. Two distinct layouts for CCHP and desalination systems are introduced: one prioritizing efficient power generation to meet electricity demands while providing waste heat for desalination, and the other focusing on balancing cooling and heating loads alongside water desalination. Both layouts are tailored to meet the building's energy and water demands while considering operational efficiency. Optimization of these layouts against traditional systems using the bat search algorithm emphasizes economic viability and the gas engine's operational flexibility, which are crucial for partial load operation. In addition, an environmental assessment compares the proposed CCHP-desalination systems with conventional setups, assessing CO2 emission reductions and overall sustainability. The evaluation encompasses key environmental metrics, such as resource consumption and the integration of renewable energy sources. Results highlight significant CO2 emission reductions across various gas engine capacities, with notable enhancements in economic and environmental performance achieved by selecting a 3,250 kW gas engine within the CCHP-desalination system. This choice not only maximizes the annual profit but also reduces CO2 emissions by 57% compared to conventional systems, underscoring the system's sustainability benefits.
