Energy Efficiency of Tall Buildings: A Global Snapshot of Innovative Design

Design priorities for tall and supertall buildings have for some time shifted to achieving more energy efficiency to address the energy needs of the increasing global population. Engineers and architects aim to achieve energy conservation through active and passive approaches, pursuing technological innovations and adopting climate-responsive design. Because of the green movement currently dominating the building industry, tall buildings that need a massive amount of energy to build and operate, and the practical desire to switch from non-renewable to clean renewable energy resources, intense attention has been given to the energy efficiency of tall buildings in the recent past. Due to the vast array of energy-efficient design features, equipment, and applications available now, it is timely to examine the pros and cons of these issues. This review paper is an attempt to comprehensively present and deliberate these issues. It illustrates and discusses the concepts and applications through a few case studies from several continents worldwide. The review shows that the design of tall buildings focusing on energy conservation is an evolutionary process and there is a need for further research about how to face the associated challenges to improve energy efficiency by developing creative solutions and strategies, as well as applying additional innovative technologies.

The fishing industry is responsible for generating large amounts of organic waste rich in compounds of commercial interest. This review aimed to present the state of the art about the possibilities of using solid waste to obtain value-added products. Skins, fins, and scales have been used to obtain gelatin and collagen, a promising compound for use as an additive in yogurts and creams, as well as for the synthesis of biodegradable packaging that, if applicable, can reduce the environmental impact caused by petroleum packaging. Other parts, such as the head and the viscera, contain polyunsaturated fatty acids and other fat-soluble vitamins that have been studied for the production of omega-3 capsules for the pharmaceutical industry, but when the extracted oil does not fit the feeding parameters, it can be applied for the production of biodiesel. Furthermore, fishes are a promising source of astaxanthin, a carotenoid with high antioxidant properties. The use of combined techniques such as chemical and enzymatic methods can increase the extraction yield and favor the obtaining of more purified compounds, in addition to promoting the reduction of chemicals that are aggressive to the environment. In general, conscious production in the fishing industry through the valorization of waste generated for use as inputs for other value chains encompasses aspects of the circular economy, which can positively impact several Sustainable Development Goals.

From Infrastructural Repair to Reparative Planning Metro as Sanctuary

Problem, research strategy, and findingsPlanners face great urgency to account for the field's entanglement with White supremacy and rebuild from harm. Yet the actual practice of reparative planning in political communities still mired in racial inequalities and public institutions entangled in the production of racialized space is hardly straightforward. Anti-racist reckonings and reparations measures occurring within institutionalized venues are necessary starting points for reparative planning that can be further supplemented and amplified by anti-racist struggles and social practices in different arenas. Using a multimethod research design combining direct participation and nonparticipant observation with document-based research using primary and secondary sources and interviews, this case study of Alliance for Community Transit-Los Angeles (ACT-LA) explores infrastructural systems as key areas of racial harm, focal points of anti-racist resistance, and keystones for reparative planning. The substantive analysis focuses on ACT-LA's Reimagining Safety initiative, which seeks to replace Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Agency's racialized policing practices with public investments in community-based systems of safety. Case findings help expand points of entry and paths for reparative planning, inform strategies by planners embracing the reparative turn, and strengthen connections between community-based mobilizations and reparative *** for practicePlanners can advocate for institutionalized and social practices of reparative planning in the issue areas, sectors, and organizations in which we work, in solidarity with the reparations movement and other anti-racist struggles.

Optimisation of the design of a steel-welded pressure hull structure based on interactive nonlinear collapse strength analyses

In this study, the genetic algorithm (GA) was implemented for the multi-objective optimization of the structural design of a pressure hull. The objective functions sought the maximum ultimate strength of the ring-stiffened cylindrical shell structure with minimum structural weight and maximum volume of the configured structural member. First, the evaluation models of several design variables of submarine structures were studied. Subsequently, a multi-objective GA algorithm was introduced. To improve the quality of the new population, several design constraints are applied. The final candidate structures were recomputed by non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) to observe the failure modes and compared with the initial design model. The results suggest that a lightweight construction would be achieved when a material with higher strength is used, especially for greater design depths

Fuzzy geostatistical evaluation of micro-scale attributes of sidewalk accessibility: A Brazilian case

Walking is a primary form of mobility and accessible sidewalks are basic features in enabling it. Nevertheless, studies regarding walking and its relation with pedestrian infrastructure are still limited, especially considering a micro-scale approach and the context of developing countries. Thus, this study proposes a fuzzy geostatistical evaluation of sidewalk accessibility considering micro-scale attributes, through the development of an accessibility checklist and its application in Santa Maria city, Brazil. Micro-scale parameters regarding physical accessibility of sidewalks and intersections were applied to evaluate the infrastructure. The research denoted mostly inadequate conditions in the study area, such as: presence of surface cracking and unevennessess;existence of physical obstacles within the effective width and height;absence of tactile pavement;existence of intersections without adequate crosswalks, curb ramps and pedestrian signals. These results indicate that sidewalks and intersections need to be prioritized by local stakeholders, with improvements directed to mitigate the main issues identified.

Building Information Modeling Applied to Daylight Dynamic Simulation Considering Local and Global Climate Change

The EN 17037:2018 standard, titled "Daylight in Buildings", is recognized as a step in the right direction concerning daylighting and has been used as the basis for the recently revised Brazilian standard. In this context, this study aims to delve into the understanding of the daylight performance in buildings in Brazil by analyzing the advancements and challenges in NBR 15215/15575:2022. Two methods will be employed: the computational daylight performance simulation method and the abacus method, following the revision of NBR 15575:2022, in a Housing of Social Interest (HIS) located in the city of Belem, Brazil. Since it is a digital prototype and not a physical one, the reliability of the simulations was verified by comparing the results obtained with the abacus method, which also allowed for an analysis of the case study using this alternative approach from the standard. The study aims to identify the best workflow for applying the standard, based on an investigation of dynamic simulation software and the impact of future-urban weather files, seeking to propose improvements to the standard. The results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of building information modeling, specifically the AftabRad plugin, for dynamic simulations in accordance with normative criteria, as well as the need to include urban weather files in the standard. © 2024, The Authors. Contested representations of benefits of urban nature in a densifying marginalised neighbourhood

The aim of this study is to uncover contested representations of benefits of urban nature, and how these are formally considered and operationalised in planning in the context of densification in a contested space. Such examination is necessary to understand to what extent the implementation of various representations allows for diverse framings of plural values of nature in governance, especially in vulnerable areas and contested spaces, and to consider the implications of these different knowledge holders. Through a case study of an ongoing densification process in Bellevuegarden and Lorensborg in Malmo, this study explores how benefits of urban nature are (i) represented in planning and policy, and expressed by (ii) opposing residents within the planning process. The study draws on interviews and document analysis and contributes to an in-depth and localised understanding of the construction of benefits of urban nature in planning, including confrontations between planning, developers, residents, and urban nature. We uncover how multiple representations exist simultaneously at different levels of planning, policy and in the lived experiences of residents. The lack of formal guidelines for how to represent these benefits in planning and decision-making, in terms of concepts, tools and assessment approaches, creates an interpretive flexibility that is not systematically inclusive of a spectrum of diverse social and ecological representations and their underlying values. Rather, this flexibility allowed for representations aligned with the city's strategic goals for densification to be privileged, which in this case resulted in the decision to remove green space.

A comparative study on indoor soundscape assessment via a mixed method: A case of the high school environment

Environments for learning-teaching activities require optimum acoustical conditions since students learning attitudes are directly related to verbal speaking. However, optimum acoustical conditions are not enough to provide acoustic comfort to students. To explore the acoustic requirements of educational spaces, there is a need to understand the role of sound and in which factors auditory perception of students changes. This study explores the relationship between auditory perception and the built environment in a high school. It aims to provide design guidelines for educational facilities using the systematic categorization that defines the comparison between classroom and computer laboratory spaces in I_hsan Dogramaci Foundation Bilkent High School. To understand the existing acoustic conditions in a selected educational facility, Equivalent Continuous A-Weighted Sound Level (L-Aeq), Reverberation Time (T30), and Speech Transmission Index (STI) were measured. This mixed method study includes quantitative and qualitative research methods. Data was collected through multiple instruments, including a questionnaire survey (n = 117) and semi-structured interviews (n = 50). The data analyses were conducted using SPSS v.20 statistical software and applying the method of Grounded Theory (GT). The results show that the auditory perception of students does not only depend on sound levels since the responses towards sound sources and sound levels changed depending on the context of the space (such as the lecture content or the students' task). The conceptual framework presented the relations between the built environment, acoustic environment, and auditory perception of students. The results of this research were interpreted for possible improvement directions, providing a guideline for designers to shape the auditory quality of future educational spaces. Advancing building fire safety through heat resistant and flame retardant hybrid silicone sealant

Rapid urbanization and population growth have led to a significant transformation in the urban landscape, characterized by the proliferation of high-rise buildings. However, this urban development has brought about new challenges, particularly in terms of fire safety. The escalating risk of disasters, especially fires, underscores the critical importance of implementing effective fire safety measures across all building types, necessitating legislative reforms. Despite their crucial role in ensuring structural integrity, sealants have often been overlooked in building safety standards, resulting in a lack of comprehensive regulations. The research addresses these challenges by focusing on the development of fire-resistant silicone sealants designed to enhance the fire resistance of building materials. These sealants were formulated independently, incorporating three fire retardants and four heat-resistant agents. While metal oxide flame retardants generally exhibited excellent performance, excessive mixing led to surface deformation and reduced workability. Optimal combinations of flame retardants and heat-resistant agents were identified, with the FR2 specimen demonstrating promising fire resistance performance. Full-scale fire performance tests conducted on FR2 revealed a maximum temperature difference of 40.6 degrees C between heated and unheated surfaces over a 2-h period, indicating high thermal insulation performance. These findings validate the efficacy of the proposed method and offer significant enhancements to building safety, thereby mitigating fire damage in urban environments.
