Urbanization in the Indian subcontinental countries, often unplanned, alters regional climate, triggering critical environmental challenges. This review examines its impacts on groundwater droughts, flood risks, urban heat islands, agriculture, food security, and public health. Groundwater resources across the subcontinent faced depletion due to intricate links between land-use changes and anthropogenic activities. Research from various geographical areas highlights the critical need for integrated, sustainable, locally appropriate solutions and decentralized approaches to water management. Flood risks were increased by urbanization and industrialization, necessitating the implementation of efficient mitigation techniques based on hydrological modeling and spatial planning. The growing Urban Heat Island effect put ecosystems and human health at risk, making extensive afforestation and sustainable land-use planning necessary. Food security and biodiversity were threatened by encroaching agricultural lands, necessitating climate-smart conservation and agricultural methods. This review also emphasizes how urbanization has complex implications on public health, with varying effects on respiratory ailments, air pollution, and mental health among various socioeconomic groups, necessitating comprehensive public health measures for fair access to healthcare and healthy surroundings. The study concludes by outlining diverse adaptation and mitigation strategies and future research opportunities tailored to specific challenges. These insights empower policymakers and urban planners to navigate the complexities of urbanization-induced climate change in the Indian subcontinent.

In soybean, there is a lack of research aiming to compare the performance of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods to predict more than one agronomic variable, such as days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), and grain yield (GY). As these variables are important to developing an overall precision farming model, we propose a machine learning approach to predict DM, PH, and GY for soybean cultivars based on multispectral bands. The field experiment considered 524 genotypes of soybeans in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 growing seasons and a multitemporal-multispectral dataset collected by embedded sensor in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). We proposed a multilayer deep learning regression network, trained during 2000 epochs using an adaptive subgradient method, a random Gaussian initialization, and a 50% dropout in the first hidden layer for regularization. Three different scenarios, including only spectral bands, only vegetation indices, and spectral bands plus vegetation indices, were adopted to infer each variable (PH, DM, and GY). The DL model performance was compared against shallow learning methods such as random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and linear regression (LR). The results indicate that our approach has the potential to predict soybean-related variables using multispectral bands only. Both DL and RF models presented a strong (r surpassing 0.77) prediction capacity for the PH variable, regardless of the adopted input variables group. Our results demonstrated that the DL model (r = 0.66) was superior to predict DM when the input variable was the spectral bands. For GY, all machine learning models evaluated presented similar performance (r ranging from 0.42 to 0.44) for each tested scenario. In conclusion, this study demonstrated an efficient approach to a computational solution capable of predicting multiple important soybean crop variables based on remote sensing data. Promiscuous splicing-derived hairpins are dominant substrates of tailing-mediated defense of miRNA biogenesis in mammals

Canonical microRNA (miRNA) hairpins are processed by the RNase III enzymes Drosha and Dicer into -22 nt RNAs loaded into an Argonaute (Ago) effector. In addition, splicing generates numerous intronic hairpins that bypass Drosha (mirtrons) to yield mature miRNAs. Here, we identify hundreds of previously unannotated, splicing-derived hairpins in intermediate-length (-50-100 nt) but not small (20-30 nt) RNA data. Since we originally defined mirtrons from small RNA duplexes, we term this larger set as structured splicing-derived RNAs (ssdRNAs). These associate with Dicer and/or Ago complexes, but generally accumulate modestly and are poorly conserved. We propose they contaminate the canonical miRNA pathway, which consequently requires defense against the siege of splicing-derived substrates. Accordingly, ssdRNAs/mirtrons comprise dominant hairpin substrates for 3' tailing by multiple terminal nucleotidyltransferases, notably TUT4/7 and TENT2. Overall, the rampant proliferation of young mammalian mirtrons/ssdRNAs, coupled with an inhibitory molecular defense, comprises a Red Queen's race of intragenomic conflict.

Incentive programs promote cover crop adoption in the northeastern United States

Farmers are increasingly planting cover crops to improve soil health and provide other ecosystem services. Cover crop incentive programs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and Vermont were compared and farmers using cover crops were surveyed (n = 328) to characterize program participants and assess the effects of programs on cover crop adoption. Farmers who participated in incentive programs differed from nonparticipants in their perspectives about incentive programs, challenges they faced using cover crops, and reasons for cover crop use. When averaged across farmers, results show that incentive programs doubled average farmer cropland with cover crops from 50.7 ha prior to participation to 101.0 ha during participation. Among participants who no longer were enrolled in a program, cover crop use remained on average 37.2% greater than before enrollment. Results highlight the role of incentive programs in facilitating adoption and provide insights for expanding participation to different farmers and increasing program impact.

Utilization of root cause failure analysis in the investigation of marine deck fitting failures

作者： Huff, DS Lynaugh, KM David S. Huff graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S.M.E. in 1972 and a M.S. in technology management in 1995. Prior to government service he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding as a fluid systems engineer and for Gibbs & Cox as a project engineer. Mr. Huff entered government service in 1977 with the Military Sealift Command Engineering Operations Division then as a construction representative and finally as deputy director ship design and construction. He then moved to NAVSEA in 1989 as assistant project manager on the conversion of AO-177 oilers to AO (JUMBO). From 1993 through 2000 he was assistant project manager for the construction of T-AKR-300 Class of Strategic Sealift RO/RO ships at Avondale. Currently Mr. Huff is manager of the Advanced Projects Group within the PEO EXW Auxiliary Boats and Crafts Program Office. Kevin M. Lynaugh obtained his naval architecture and marine engineering degree from University of California Berkeley in 1984. He obtained his Master's degree in science and engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1997 with a dual major in program management and operations management. He has been with NAVSEA Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division for over 16 years. He spent four years with the Hydromechanics Division computerizing the Model Design Group two years with the Large Cavitation Channel Project as a project engineer six years with the Ship Building Technologies Department as a task area manager managing research programs the past 3 ½ years with the Strategic Sealift Program as the ship design manager for Avondale's new con-struction and as the deputy assistant program manager for post delivery and NASSCO's new construction. Currently Mr. Lynaugh is the on-site ship design manager for LHD-8 at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula Mississippi.

Cracking was discovered in the openings of cargo deck tie down fittings on ships under construction. There was a distinct possibility that these cracks could propagate through the fittings and into the strength deck plating, affecting the ships hull integrity. With more than 14,000 fittings installed on each ship, the appearance of approximately 400 cracks at the mid-ship area of the main and lower decks raised production and operational concerns. This paper will discus the successful application of a Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) methodology employed by a Corrective Action Team (CAT) establish to solve the problem. Through their efforts and the systematic application of RCFA, various failure hypotheses were validated or discounted and consensus was achieved on the appropriate corrective action.

Access to adequate housing is a fundamental human right, essential to human security, nutrition and health, and a core objective of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(1,2). Globally, the housing need is most acute in Africa, where the population will more than double by 2050. However, existing data on housing quality across Africa are limited primarily to urban areas and are mostly recorded at the national level. Here we quantify changes in housing in sub-Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2015 by combining national survey data within a geostatistical framework. We show a marked transformation of housing in urban and rural sub-Saharan Africa between 2000 and 2015, with the prevalence of improved housing (with improved water and sanitation, sufficient living area and durable construction) doubling from 11% (95% confidence interval, 10-12%) to 23% (21-25%). However, 53 (50-57) million urban Africans (47% (44-50%) of the urban population analysed) were living in unimproved housing in 2015. We provide high-resolution, standardized estimates of housing conditions across sub-Saharan Africa. Our maps provide a baseline for measuring change and a mechanism to guide interventions during the era of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Biosolids are generated at Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and they enable closing the loop of valuable resources that are beneficial to the soil-plant system, however, the legal aspects of viability and the principles of the circular economy must be considered. Studies that evaluate the chemical properties of tropical soils subjected to long-term applications of biosolids are scarce, especially with regards to Emerging Organic Micropollutants (EOPs), which makes the present work original. Thus, the present study aimed to statistically evaluate through the Tukey test and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) six years of biosolids` application (2012 to 2018), with different application rates, in five areas of infertile tropical soils. The study also evaluated the Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) and EOPs in relation to the legal viability aspects of Brazil and the European Union. The results showed that the biosolids can improve the chemical properties of the soil right after the first annual application, without risk of PTEs accumulation. The EOPs that were analyzed from 2016 to 2018, remained below the detection limits, consequently complying with the legislation. Further, the PCA showed that biosolids can replace the use of commercial fertilizers in tropical soils when applied at agronomic rates to meet plant nutrient requirements (mainly N and P), which consequently diverts the biosolids from landfills, and reduces the operational costs of Brazilian WWTPs. In this way, the cleaner production of agricultural systems in tropical soil can promote the circular economy and sustainable development in WWTPs in Brazil and other tropical climate regions.

Great progress has been achieved in the research field of topological states of matter during the past decade. Recently, a quasi-1-dimensional bismuth bromide, Bi4Br4, has been predicted to be a rotational symmetry-protected topological crystalline insulator;it would also exhibit more exotic topological properties under pressure. Here, we report a thorough study of phase transitions and superconductivity in a quasihydrostatically pressurized alpha-Bi4Br4 crystal by performing detailed measurements of electrical resistance, alternating current magnetic susceptibility, and in situ high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction together with first principles calculations. We find a pressure-induced insulator-metal transition between similar to 3.0 and 3.8 GPa where valence and conduction bands cross the Fermi level to form a set of small pockets of holes and electrons. With further increase of pressure, 2 superconductive transitions emerge. One shows a sharp resistance drop to 0 near 6.8 K at 3.8 GPa;the transition temperature gradually lowers with increasing pressure and completely vanishes above 12.0 GPa. Another transition sets in around 9.0 K at 5.5 GPa and persists up to the highest pressure of 45.0 GPa studied in this work. Intriguingly, we find that the first superconducting phase might coexist with a nontrivial rotational symmetry-protected topology in the pressure range of similar to 3.8 to 4.3 GPa;the second one is associated with a structural phase transition from monoclinic C2/m to triclinic P-1 symmetry.
