A planing hull high-speed ferry with a stepped hull becomes a well-liked mode of water transportation for archipelago countries. On the other hand, the shape of steps on the bottom hull has not been recently taken into explicit consideration regarding the speed requirement and hydrodynamic properties. In this study, the step W shapes, were adopted to find the improved hydrodynamic performance in the planing conditions. To provide a more precise prediction of the pressure, velocity fields, and void fraction, the CFD was applied the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and coupled with Volume of Fluid Method (VOF) to capture air cavity The numerical conditions of the planing hull were trimmed by the stern with 2, and 3 degrees. This study discussed the air cavity that occurred behind the stepped area that can affect the hydrodynamic behaviour. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

The latest 3rd wave of COVID-19 pandemic is occurring globally from 2020 to 2021 without any sign of significant diminishing. More variants of coronavirus 2019 mutation have been found in Thailand, together with a high mortality rate. While vaccination, an important national agenda, could not yet control the pandemic, the pandemic has caused difficult circumstances in labor-intensive industries, especially the construction industries. Consequently, the researchers became interested in studying the conceptual framework to understand stakeholders’ awareness in the Thai construction industry affected by the 3rd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially during April–May 2021. And hence did as follows. At first, the researchers studied literature reviews from various academic articles and online databases and gathered information through in-depth interviews via collaboration tools such as the Microsoft team and zoom applications in communicating with thirteen experienced construction practitioners. Secondly, the researchers validated the information and developed a conceptual framework model of stakeholders’ awareness in the construction industry in Thailand. In the model, the researchers found that the pandemic changed the attitudes of Thai practitioners, both confident and satisfaction attitudes, affected working practices, and necessitated stakeholders to assess effects on construction projects and formulate future policies and practical measures at executive and operational levels. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Degradation of Tattoo Inks by Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment: A Proof-of-Concept Study

Tattoos have been a part of the culture and a way of expression for a remarkable portion of society throughout history. However, different dissatisfactions related to tattoos lead people to tattoo removal procedures that can be carried out in various ways. Among them, laser tattoo removal is the most common technique. However, laser tattoo removal could have downsides;thus, novel technologies that either support or replace conventional methods are needed. In the present study, the degradation of red, yellow, green, blue, black and white tattoo inks by plasma treatment was evaluated for possible future use of cold plasma in tattoo removal. Tattoo inks were treated with DBD air plasma in the aqueous form and in the agarose gel. Furthermore, also tattoo pigments were exposed to plasma-treated water. The KI-starch reagent was used to correlate the oxidative strength of plasma-treated water with the degradation of tattoo inks. Degradation of tattoo inks was determined by reflectance measurements and was measured as color change with respect to plasma treatment time. Color changes of tattoo inks were represented using the CIELAB color system and CIE xyY color space. Our results suggest that air DBD plasma treatment and plasma-treated water are capable of degrading tattoo inks. The color change of tattoo inks due to degradation by plasma was clearly distinguishable by the naked eye, and the maximum value corresponding to color change was measured for red tattoo ink. © 2022 by Begell House, Inc.

Task-modulated neural responses in scene-selective regions of the human brain

The study of scene perception is crucial to the understanding of how one interprets and interacts with their environment, and how the environment impacts various cognitive functions. The literature so far has mainly focused on the impact of low-level and categorical properties of scenes and how they are represented in the scene-selective regions in the brain, PPA, RSC, and OPA. However, higher-level scene perception and the impact of behavioral goals is a developing research area. Moreover, the selection of the stimuli has not been systematic and mainly focused on outdoor environments. In this fMRI experiment, we adopted multiple behavioral tasks, selected real-life indoor stimuli with a systematic categorization approach, and used various multivariate analysis techniques to explain the neural modulation of scene perception in the scene-selective regions of the human brain. Participants (N = 21) performed categorization and approach-avoidance tasks during fMRI scans while they were viewing scenes from built environment categories based on different affordances ((i)access and (ii)circulation elements, (iii)restrooms and (iv)eating/seating areas). ROI-based classification analysis revealed that the OPA was significantly successful in decoding scene category regardless of the task, and that the task condition affected category decoding performances of all the scene-selective regions. Model-based representational similarity analysis (RSA) revealed that the activity patterns in scene-selective regions are best explained by task. These results contribute to the literature by extending the task and stimulus content of scene perception research, and uncovering the impact of behavioral goals on the scene-selective regions of the brain.

Spatiotemporal variation in population dynamics of a narrow endemic, Ranunculus austro-oreganus

Premise: Understanding how population dynamics vary in space and time is critical for understanding the basic life history and conservation needs of a species, especially for narrow endemic species whose populations are often in similar environments and therefore at increased risk of extinction under climate change. Here, we investigated the spatial and temporal variation in population dynamics of Ranunculus austro-oreganus, a perennial buttercup endemic to fragmented prairie habitat in one county in southern Oregon. Methods: We performed demographic surveys of three populations of R. austro-oreganus over 4 years (2015-2018). We used size-structured population models and life table response experiments to investigate vital rates driving spatiotemporal variation in population growth. Results: Overall, R. austro-oreganus had positive or stable stochastic population growth rates, though individual vital rates and overall population growth varied substantially among sites and years. All populations had their greatest growth in the same year, suggesting potential synchrony associated with climate conditions. Differences in survival contributed most to spatial variation in population growth, while differences in reproduction contributed most to temporal variation in population growth. Conclusions: Populations of this extremely narrow endemic appear stable, with positive growth during our study window. These results suggest that populations of R. austro-oreganus are able to persist if their habitat is not eliminated by land-use change. Nonetheless, its narrow distribution and synchronous population dynamics suggest the need for continued monitoring, particularly with ongoing habitat loss and climate change.

Geopolymer Haunch Beam-Column Connection Behavior

A haunch system improves the performance of a beam-to-column structure, in combination with a geopolymer haunch, the green-concrete concept is supported by reducing the Portland cement use. The energy dissipation, load-deformation behavior, failure mode, residual deformation, and plastic hinge formation under a loading-unloading scheme were studied based on experimental full-scale specimens. The responses of the loading-unloading protocol were compared to the monotonic loading results. A geopolymer and conventional concrete haunch having similar compressive strengths were analyzed. It was shown that the geopolymer haunch performed excellently and that a concrete haunch remarkably improves the performance of a structure regardless of the haunch material. The geopolymer haunch enhanced the load level at first cracking for 10%, and the formation of plastic hinges 0.7% and 4.5% for the monotonic and loading-unloading, respectively, but slightly reduced the ultimate load by 1%. The loading-unloading protocol had a negative impact of 3% to 7% on the overall performance, the reduction was lower for the geopolymer haunch underlining the superiority of this material. The loading-unloading scheme resulted in a monotonic strength degradation and deviation in failure mode. A finite element model was constructed to generate and analyze the relation of the haunch's concrete strength to the load-deformation response. It was found that the haunch's compressive strength had no influence on the behavior of the beam-to-column joint, even for a haunch with a compressive strength as low as 25 MPa.

Improving Social Acceptance of Orthopedic Foot Orthoses Through Image-Generative AI in Product Design

The lack of social acceptability for wearable devices such as orthopedic foot orthoses can lead to irregular usage and missed health benefits, as shown in prior studies. While AI-generated designs have been explored for prototyping aesthetic hand orthoses, their impact on social acceptability, particularly for foot orthoses, remains unknown. The current state of research is limited, as no empirical evidence exists on whether AI-designed orthoses influence acceptance, nor has the role of customized generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) and specific prompting strategies been examined in this context. To address these gaps, we conducted two mixed-methods studies to investigate (1) the impact of AI-generated orthosis designs on social acceptability compared to existing orthopedic products and development concepts and (2) how a customized GPT and different prompt keywords influence acceptance. Our results show that AI-generated designs significantly enhance social acceptance across orthotic categories. Furthermore, we found that personalized GPTs and targeted prompt keywords significantly influence user perception. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of using AI to create socially acceptable design solutions for wearable technology and offer new applications for future smart devices. We contribute to generative AI in product design and provide concrete recommendations for optimizing prompting strategies to enhance social acceptance.

The object of study of this paper is the Church of Cristo Obrero y Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, in the city of Atlántida, Uruguay, designed and built by Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste between 1956 and 1960, and proclaimed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. Furthermore, the object of study is the outset of Eladio Dieste's experimentations with reinforced brickwork, which resulted in innovative thin-shell structural typologies. Hence, the objective of this article is to verify the geometrical relationships within the continuous gaussian vaults of the Cristo Obrero' roof and the ruled surfaces of its lateral walls. The proposed methodological procedures for this research were the in situ visitation of the object of study, followed by the consultation of original construction drawings, as well as the exploratory parametric modeling and polynomial regression of the architectural geometry of the Church of Cristo Obrero. Amongst the expected contributions for this research reside the dissemination of Latin-American modern architectural heritage sites within European academic journals, digital design technologies within Latin-American research centres, as well as the fostering of the comprehension of the design and construction process of the Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste. © 2023 F. The quality of communication with a computer impacts how the designer performs during the design process. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) empowers the designer by expanding the solution space using the expertise from previous knowledge. However, the developments in AI-powered design tools mainly focus on visual and spatial enhancements. In the last decade, AI-powered design tools mostly experimented with image transformation models (GANs) to provide fast insights to designers using learned experiences, simulations, or datasets. The studies on the design process using verbal language with the help of AI are limited. Therefore, designers’ capacity to communicate with intelligent machines would lead us to envision the future of AI-powered design tools. In design practice, designers develop individual and contextual studies through digital tools. This study investigates the process of architectural visual generation and verbal communication to describe architectural images by architecture graduates with prior experience or no experience in prior with Midjourney. The research focuses on the designers’ semantic language during the design process with the AI-powered tool and analysis of the verbal part of the communication. The results of this study show that participants’ first impressions of the image and how they express their impressions through description do not correspond with how Midjourney interprets those descriptions. Furthermore, architects’ image generation process using the tool is nonlinear. As architects develop a deeper understanding of changing modes of interactions, they are more likely to benefit from AI-powered tools as collaborative entities. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Impacts of rapid urbanization on spatial dynamics of land use-based carbon emission and surface temperature changes in the Semarang Metropolitan Region, Indonesia

This study explores the relationship between carbon emission patterns and the land surface temperature (LST) changes due to the rapid urbanization in the Semarang Metropolitan Region (SMR), an Indonesian area that has experienced rapid urban growth compared to other urban areas. This research used the stock-difference and gain-loss methods to calculate carbon stocks and emissions. Then, band 6 on Landsat 5 TM (2008) and band 10 on Landsat 8 OLI (2013 and 2018) were used to calculate the LST changes. These results showed that the peri-urban area had a more significant change. The correlation between carbon emissions and an increased SMR temperature correlates to 0.646. This shows that the carbon emissions pattern promotes temperature dynamics in the SMR. Furthermore, this study proved the release of carbon emissions in line with LST dynamics spatially. In this case, this study proved that rapid urbanization in the SMR promotes both carbon emission and LST. Those changes are also affected by vegetation canopy availability and other activities. As a result, the government must prioritize spatial planning in the SMR to mitigate environmental change risk. In addition, the government must develop novel strategies to deal with a wide range of fast and unpredictable potential changes in the urban area and its surroundings.
