The development of artificial intelligence technology has driven the emergence of various innovations in human-machine interaction, one of which is the chatbot. A chatbot is software that can interact with humans through text or voice, creating the impression that they are communicating with real people. Currently, chatbots are very popular. This chatbot was developed as a collaboration between the team from Soegijapranata Catholic University as part of the Higher Education Community and KRS BP2P Java III within the Kedaireka Matching Fund platform. The chatbot that has been developed aims to provide information services related to the process of building self-built housing. The KRS BP2P Java III chatbot makes it easier for the community to enhance their understanding of self-reliance in fulfilling the need for decent housing. © 2024 IEEE.

Digital Twin Based on CFD Modelling for Analysis of Two-Phase Flows During Pipeline Filling-Emptying Procedures

Pipeline filling and emptying are critical hydraulic procedures involving transient two-phase air-water interactions, which can cause pressure surges and structural risks. Traditional Digital Twin models rely on one-dimensional (1D) approaches, which cannot capture air-water interactions. This study integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models into a Digital Twin framework for improved predictive analysis. A CFD-based Digital Twin is developed and validated using real-time pressure measurements, incorporating 2D and 3D CFD models, mesh sensitivity analysis, and calibration procedures. Key contributions include a CFD-driven Digital Twin for real-time monitoring and machine learning (ML) techniques to optimise pressure surges. ML models trained with experimental and CFD data reduce reliance on computationally expensive CFD simulations. Among the 31 algorithms tested, decision trees, efficient linear models, and ensemble classifiers achieved 100% accuracy for filling processes, while k-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) provided 97.2% accuracy for emptying processes. These models effectively predict hazardous pressure peaks and vacuum conditions, confirming their reliability in optimising pipeline operations while significantly reducing computational time.

Experimental Evaluation on Palm Oil and Sesame Oil-based Resin Properties as Core Sandwich Material for Lightweight Ship Structure

Research on lightweight material on ship structure has taken giant steps during the last decade. One reason is that shipping activities have increased and, therefore, the possibility of increasing the carrying cargo capacity in a realistic way using advanced lightweight material. This article summarizes a research investigation regarding the experimental tests of vinyl ester bio resin material using palm oil and sesame oil based on Lloyd's Register (LR) standard. Several tests were conducted, including density, water absorption test, Fourier transformed infrared test (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and mechanical tests to evaluate the effect of 2-10% addition of vegetable oils on mechanical properties. The influence of the addition of vegetable oils is successfully characterized using physical measurements, which indicate the possible formation of a polymer blend to increase in elongation value. Mechanical testing shows that adding vegetable oils causes a decrease in average density, hardness, bending strength, and tensile strength. The bending strength decreases about 9.20 - 47.06% for 2-10% palm oil addition and 5.33 - 42.40% for sesame oil addition. Moreover, vegetable oil causes a tensile strength decrease of about 5-18.75% on palm oil and 3.75-13.75% on sesame oil. As summarized, bio resin based on sesame oil has better mechanical behavior with the oil addition of 4-8% fulfills all Lloyd's Register criteria.

Polymeric Coatings with Electrolyzed Acidic Water: A Novel Approach to Extending Egg Shelf Life and Quality

Electrolyzed acidic water (EAW) contains hypochlorous acid as its active compound, which is a potent antimicrobial. It was encapsulated in polymeric coatings and applied to the surface of eggs. The antimicrobial activity and the ability to extend the shelf life of eggs at ambient temperature for 45 days were evaluated, by physical, microbiological, and sensory analyses. The analysis also included the evaluation of mechanical, thermal, and crystallinity properties and the interaction between the coating components and the eggshell. The results showed that eggs from young, middle-aged, and adult hens, encapsulated and coated with EAW, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, and chitosan, gained resistance and a glossy appearance. The thickness of the coating was 2.9 mu m for young and adult hens' eggs and 2.60 mu m for those of old hens, as observed by SEM. Shelf life was extended to 45 days under refrigeration and more than 30 days at ambient temperature. Coated eggs were acceptable for 85% of the panelists compared to 57% acceptance of non-coated eggs. The encapsulation and coating with EAW as an antimicrobial agent improved the surface protection of commercial eggs, reduced albumen liquefaction, and maintained quality by acting as a barrier against air, thereby preserving sensory characteristics.

The special issue explores the urgent need for climate-resilient urban transportation systems in response to increasing climate-related disasters. It emphasizes the importance of data-driven resilience planning that considers how diverse human mobility patterns influence vulnerability during crises. Studies highlighted include human evacuation behaviors during Hurricane Irma and the Marshall Fire, revealing how risk perception and socioeconomic factors shape response actions. Autonomous shuttles and other adaptive transit solutions demonstrate the potential for low-emission alternatives in resilient urban mobility. Further studies examine flood impacts on commuting and emergency response in flood-prone areas like Wuhan and Shanghai, underscoring the value of machine learning and predictive traffic models. Heat-related challenges are explored, with findings on gender disparities and the resilience of bike-sharing during heatwaves. Throughout, environmental justice emerges as essential to resilience planning, as lower-income and high-risk populations bear disproportionate impacts from climate hazards. For future research, co-produced knowledge that includes diverse stakeholders will be key to creating inclusive and resilient urban mobility solutions that address both technological and social dimensions of climate adaptation.

Construction processes and techniques in traditional Birgi houses: a typical Ottoman settlement

The historic town of Birgi is a historic settlement within Izmir, Turkey, included in the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in 2012. Traditional Birgi houses, dated to the second half of the 18th and the beginning of the 20th century, are one of the best-representative and best-preserved examples of the himis houses - the most common housing typology of the Ottoman Period. These hybrid structures include a masonry ground floor and timber frame upper floors as their primary load-bearing systems, with details shaped in line with the regional material availability and the performance of these materials, as well as technical know-how and the local experience of major historic fires and earthquakes. In this study, authentic construction techniques used in the West Anatolian Ottoman houses and information about the construction processes are presented through Birgi's traditional houses. For this aim, a visual examination and documentation of various himis sub-typologies representative of different construction periods are conducted. The differences in construction details are evaluated in light of the predominant architectural styles and technological possibilities of their construction periods. In addition, the strengths and weaknesses of authentic construction techniques and common construction errors are discussed.

The current state of two 16th century masonry churches were studied after being damaged during the 2017 earthquake in Mexico. The two complexes being analyzed are part of the World Heritage Site "Ruta de los Conventos": the Convento de San Guillermo Totolapan, in the state of Morelos south-east of Mexico City, and the Huaquechula Monastery, in the state of Puebla south of Mexico City. These buildings are representative of the architectural model adopted by the first missionaries who evangelized the indigenous populations in the 16th century. The churches were constructed circa 1535 and 1548, respectively. The history and cultural significance for each project is researched in coordination with the stakeholders, along with the contrasting structural systems and any known previous interventions, historic and contemporary. The damage inflicted to the two churches due to the most recent earthquake (2017) is critically analyzed, specifically focusing on inherent defects of the existing materials, the variation in construction methodologies and the impact of contemporary interventions such as the use of reinforced concrete and structural steel following previous earthquakes. Potential repair methodologies are discussed in order to mitigate future damage to the structures. Discussions include the importance of using compatible materials along with appropriate repair procedures and the need for ongoing maintenance of these important heritage structures.

Brain-computer interface (BCI), a communication technology between brain and computer developed for a long time since the 1970s, can be incorporated into wearable devices by developing powerful signal processing algorithms and semiconductor technologies. For a satisfactory user experience based on BCI, high information transfer rate and low power consumption should be considered together without losing accuracy. Although many existing BCI algorithms have been mainly focused solely on the accuracy, their deployment on wearable devices is not straightforward due to the limited hardware resources and computational capabilities. This tutorial summarizes recent advances in wearable BCI algorithms and hardware implementations from an algorithm-hardware co-design perspective and discusses future directions.

Increasing air pollutants significantly contributes to climate change, requiring innovative mitigation strategies. Microalgae provide a promising solution by absorbing CO2 and pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and ammonia from agricultural and industrial emissions, while also generating biomass for biofuels and animal feed. This study investigated the effects of light intensity on the growth and biochemical composition of Scenedesmus sp. AQUAMEB-57, Ankistrodesmus sp. AQUAMEB-33, and Synechococcaceae AQUAMEB-32 cultivated in photobioreactors under two batch and continuous culture conditions. Scenedesmus sp. reached the highest cell concentration (8 x 106 cells ml-1) at 200 mu mol photons m-2s-1, while Ankistrodesmus sp. and Synechococcaceae peaked at 300 mu mol photons m-2s-1. Dry biomass was highest for all species at 300 mu mol photons m-2s-1. Scendesmus sp showed the highest protein content (15.6%) at a light intensity of 200 mu mol photons m-2s-1, Ankistrodesmus sp. (17.2%) at 300 mu mol photons m-2s-1, and Synechococcaceae (23.5%) at 100 mu mol photons m-2s-1. Maximum carbohydrate content for Scenedesmus sp., Ankistrodesmus sp., and Synechococcaceae was 56.0%, 20.5%, and 18.4%, respectively, at 300 mu mol photons m-2s-1. C16/C18 fatty acids significantly increased as light intensity was raised from 100 to 200 mu mol photons m-2s-1. The findings show that light intensity impacts growth rates and biochemical profiles, varying by species and cultivation mode. Continuous systems yield higher biomass than batch systems, emphasizing the need for optimized strategies to enhance algal productivity. This research enhances understanding of microalgal growth dynamics, offering insights into optimizing conditions for improved biomass yield and supporting sustainable biofuel production and other valuable products.

Flexural behavior of post-tensioned precast concrete girder at negative moment region

This study introduced a post-tensioned precast concrete system that was developed and designed to improve the performance of joints by post-tensioning. Full-scaled specimens were tested to investigate flexural performances at the negative moment region, where the test variables were the presence of slabs, tendon types, and post-tensioned lengths. A specimen with slabs exhibited significantly higher stiffness and strength values than a specimen without slabs. Thus, it would be reasonable to consider the effects of a slab on the flexural strength for an economical design. A specimen with unbonded mono-tendons had slightly lower initial stiffness and flexural strength values than a specimen with bonded multi-tendons but showed greater flexural strength than the value specified in the design codes. The post-tensioned length was found to have no significant impact on the flexural behavior of the proposed post-tensioned precast concrete system. In addition, a finite element analysis was conducted on the proposed post-tensioned precast concrete system, and the tests and analysis results were compared in detail.
