This article revisits the theme of uncertainty in planning thought. I argue that to manage the punitive consequences of uncertainty we have to acknowledge it as a socio-material condition. Uncertainty is neither a psychological state, nor a cognitive deficiency, nor a quality of external reality. Rather, it becomes manifest when we act in and engage with the world. To this extent, and to navigate uncertainty, planners have to develop strong collaborations that can resist threats. My argument draws on actor network theory and Peter Marris's writings on the unequal distribution of resources and relationships necessary for overcoming the disruptions of uncertainty.

Daylight Annual Illuminance Investigation in Elementary School Classrooms for the Tropic of Lhokseumawe, Indonesia

This study investigated twenty-two (22) state elementary schools, regarding daylight annual illuminance in the classrooms, using climate-based daylight modelling (CBDM) metrics. This is due to the missing information on the annual daylight performance inside the classroom in Indonesia. Over 250 classrooms were assessed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper computational platforms. Furthermore, Daysim simulation engine was employed through the advantage of Ladybug tools to connect and automate the simulation workflow parametrically. Since there were no prior studies using CBDM metrics for daylight assessment of classrooms in the Indonesian context, the illuminance range from 250 to 750 lux was taken as the target for the annual useful daylight illuminance (UDI), as suggested in the Indonesian daylighting standard. Result shows 35 classrooms under the good daylight performance, 171 classrooms in sufficient category and 50 others under unsatisfactory of annual illuminance. The most sensitive contributors are both corridor and back shading depth with Spearman correlation of -0.70 and -0.76 respectively. The strong sensitive variables both has p-values lower than 0.05 which indicates statistically significant for the model.

This study introduces an innovative phase change material (PCM) impregnated waste tire-derived carbon (WTC), based on the dire need for enhanced energy efficiency and building temperature management. Thermal energy storage materials were produced by combining capric acid (CA) and palmitic acid (PA) eutectic mixture (CA-PA) with WTC in cement-expanded vermiculite-based composites (CEVCs). The study comprehensively evaluates the impact of PCM-impregnated WTC on the thermoregulation performance of CEVCs in specially prepared test cabins under real weather conditions. Moreover, the material's physio-mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, and thermal behavior were also investigated, validating its ability to absorb and discharge latent heat. The results revealed that WTC/CA-PA experienced latent heat values of 85.2 J/g and 85.8 J/g during solidification and melting, respectively. Furthermore, it was observed that composites containing 10-40 % PCM-impregnated WTC exhibited 12.7-43.7 % and 25.5-160.8 % higher dry unit weight and compressive strength than the reference specimen. The solar thermoregulation experiments at real weather conditions revealed that CEVC containing PCM-impregnated WTC produced a maximum difference of 5.3 degrees C and 3.53 degrees C in temperature between the upper surfaces and near surfaces of the test and reference chambers. The promising results symbolize a significant shift toward fostering sustainable construction practices, encompassing occupant comfort and energy efficiency for a sustainable built environment while addressing the critical issue of waste tire recycling.

Rockfall Hazard Analysis Based on the Concept of Functional Safety with Application to the Highway Network in South Korea

Numerous rockfall incidents involving infrastructure damage and loss of life have been reported along roads in mountainous terrain. Previous studies have used quantitative risk assessment approaches to identify the level of rockfall risk. However, appropriate quantitative indicators that are able to describe time-varying risk have not yet been developed. This study aims to develop a rockfall risk mitigation method based on reliability concepts, to classify rockfall data, to model the probability of rockfall occurrence, and to estimate the magnitude of risk reduction through mitigation measures. A synthetic measure of rockfall risk is proposed, which allows to compare directly and quantitatively the rockfall risk for different cut slopes under unmitigated and mitigated conditions. The proposed methodology can estimate the risk reduction obtained using mitigation measures, such as introducing protections barriers, their periodic maintenance, and horizontal coverage ratio. This methodology was applied to 20 years of rockfall data collected by the Korea Expressway Corporation from 1215 artificial cut slopes along the highway network in South Korea. The rockfall frequency was analyzed based on the inventory data, and a rockfall hazard mitigation strategy was demonstrated using the suggested methodology for the case study. It was shown that appropriate mitigation strategies, based on number of protection barriers, interval of periodic maintenance, and horizontal coverage ratio, can be devised to reduce the risk of different artificial slopes below a target failure probability. The approach shown in this study can provide insights into ways of improving overall risk management to prevent losses by rockfall.

Peri-urban areas are playing an increasingly crucial role in the agricultural development and intensification in ***-urban agriculture is highly vulnerable to change compared with urban and rural agriculture,due to its location in transitional *** of peri-urban agricultural intensity can help guide regional *** this study,we assessed the sustainability of peri-urban areas based on agricultural intensity in Karawang Regency,*** developed a village-based index to assess the region’s agricultural intensity by rescaling the village agriculture index(VAI)and combining the local sustainability index(LSI)with factor *** the unit of analysis is the village,we modified the LSI to the village sustainability index(VSI).In addition,we also developed a logical matrix analysis to determine the level of agricultural sustainability(LoAS)of each *** combined results of the three indices(VAI,VSI,and LoAS)generated information about agricultural *** results indicated that peri-urban villages with high agricultural intensity tended to exhibit low levels of social welfare,economic development,and disaster ***,high agricultural intensity did not necessarily ensure the prosperity of the ***,there was the economic disparity among the villages in the study *** diversity of agricultural intensity seems to be more critical than promoting agricultural intensity ***,this study highlights the distinctive characteristics and dynamic of peri-urban *** approaches,variables,and information regarding the combination of agricultural intensity and sustainability need to be developed as valuable tools for regional planning.

Spaces Eliciting Negative and Positive Emotions in Shrinking Neighbourhoods: a Study in Seoul, South Korea, Using EEG (Electroencephalography)

Although shrinking neighbourhoods are places where urban citizens experience negative emotions, some evidence suggests that people in some shrinking neighbourhoods feel less negative emotions than in other areas. Nevertheless, empirical studies that analyse environmental and personal elements that affect people's emotions in a shrinking neighbourhood remain insufficient. This is rather surprising, considering an increasing interest in the effects of negative emotions on individuals' health. Thus, this study used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine the impacts of environmental and personal characteristics on people's emotional levels in a shrinking area of Seoul, South Korea. A multilinear regression model was used to analyse emotional valence levels between sites with different urban designs and management levels. The results revealed that people felt positive emotions at sites where both urban design factors and their management were both satisfactory at appropriate levels. The results also found that people who had lived or worked in the neighbourhood for a long time and were women experienced more positive emotions than visitors and men. This finding implies that a shrinking neighbourhood can maintain a sense of satisfaction as long as the area is carefully managed. Revealing the emotional effects of environmental and personal characteristics in a shrinking neighbourhood can be used for planning practices and policy-making to create healthy and liveable urban neighbourhoods.

Indoor Air Quality Diagnosis program for School Multi-Purpose Activity and Office Spaces

This study presents a simple indoor air quality diagnosis program for school office spaces, which are occupied for long durations by teachers, and indoor sports facilities, whose utilization has been on the rise in response to high concentrations of pollutants in outdoor air. The proposed program was made with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and Microsoft Excel. This program requires inputs which can be easily determined or measured even by nonexperts and can check the current status of indoor air quality such as CO2 and PM2.5 concentrations and predict the effect if changes are made. In addition, it is possible to diagnose indoor air quality before and after class and compare it with the initial plan so that if it exceeds the indoor air quality maintenance standard range, it can be improved by using a ventilation system and an air purifier. The development of the program was divided into four stages. First, prior research on the influencing factors was investigated. Second, influencing factors affecting the changes in PM(2.5 )and CO2 concentrations were selected by category to accommodate the various factors, and those selected as input were presented. Third, mass and concentration conservation equations were utilized to derive PM2.5 and CO2 concentration prediction equations according to activity and passage of time, and a VBA code was used for constructing the program. For verification of the developed program, the calculation results were compared with the measured data. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was 19.47% for PM2.5 concentration. In order to improve accuracy, Simulation 2, in which the wind speed and indoor/outdoor air pressure difference are corrected, is presented. The MAPE of PM2.5 concentration by the corrected Simulation 2 was lowered 5.15%.

Modeling ultrasound modulation of neural function in a single cell

Background: Low intensity ultrasound stimulation has been shown to non-invasively modulate neural function in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) with high precision. Ultrasound sonication is capable of either excitation or inhibition, depending on the ultrasound parameters used. On the other hand, the mode of interaction of ultrasonic waves with the neural tissue for effective neuromodulation remains *** method: Here within we propose a numerical model that incorporates the mechanical effects of ultrasound stimulation on the Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) neuron by incorporating the relation between increased external pressure and the membrane induced tension, with a stress on the flexoelectric effect on the neural membrane. The external pressure causes an increase in the total tension of the membrane thus affecting the probability of the ion channels being open after the conformational changes that those channels ***: The interplay between varying the acoustic intensities and frequencies depicts different action potential suppression rates, whereby a combination of low intensity and low frequency ultrasound sonication proved to be the most effective in modulating neural function. Comparison with Existing Methods: Our method solely depends on the HH model of a single neuron and the linear flexoelectric effect of the dielectric neural membrane, when under an ultrasound-induced mechanical strain, while varying the ion-channels conductances based on different sonication frequencies and intensities. We study the effect of ultrasound parameters on the firing rate, latency, and action potential amplitude of a HH neuron for a better understanding of the neuromodulation modality of ultrasound stimulation (in the continuous and pulsed modes).Conclusions: This simulation work confirms the published experimental data that low intensity and low frequency ultrasound sonication has a higher success rate of modulating neural firing.

An Energy-Efficient Domain-Specific Reconfigurable Array Processor With Heterogeneous PEs for Wearable Brain-Computer Interface SoCs

Recently, there is increasing demand for energy-efficient signal processing in wearable visual-stimuli-based brain-computer interface (V-BCI) devices. For the better accuracy and the reduced latency of the V-BCI system, the target identification (TI) algorithm that analyzes brain signals is being advanced, and the importance of an energy-efficient accelerating chip that processes various linear algebra operations constituting the TI algorithms is growing. In this paper, we propose a domain-specific reconfigurable array processor (RAP) with a dynamically reconfigurable and scalable array including 5-heterogeneous processing elements (PEs) for the energy-efficient acceleration of basic linear algebra subprograms (BLAS) and matrix decompositions. The system-on-chip (SoC), including the proposed RAP, was fabricated in 130-nm CMOS technology with an area of 16.87-mm(2) and measured at 1.0 V 90 MHz. The RAP achieved an information transfer rate (ITR) of 139.9-bits/min and a TI accuracy of 95.4% on a fabricated chip through an optimized TI algorithm and scalable array processing. In addition, the RAP has 16.8x higher TI energy efficiency than prior work and achieved an energy efficiency of 2144.2-bits/min/mW for information transfer processing rate with the proposed TI algorithm. The RAP supports a greater variety of linear algebra operations and data sizes with hardware reconfiguration than the prior accelerators.

Leveraging temporal, textural, and socio-environmental features for accurate detection of abandoned farmland

Detecting abandoned farmland is crucial for effective agricultural land management. By leveraging satellite imagery, and using temporal and textural features, machine learning studies have identified such lands. However, demographic and locational factors, though recognized as key drivers of farmland abandonment, have not been used as classification attributes. Our research employs Support Vector Machines and Random Forests, integrating these socioenvironmental factors, achieves accuracies of 89.2 % and 88.5 % for overall and user classifications, respectively. We discovered that factors such as parcel size, slope, and road proximity are more critical than other conventional features in identifying abandoned farmland, recommending further investigation into these socio-environmental factors to uncover more impactful classification attributes. Additionally, our findings contrast with other studies by demonstrating that both higher and lower harmonic components of NDVI and NDWI enhance classification accuracy. This research could greatly assist in agricultural land surveys and in developing policies for sustainable farmland preservation.
