Optimizing urban green spaces using a decision-support model for carbon sequestration and ecological connectivity

Urban green spaces (UGSs) are vital for enhancing urban ecological health and resident well-being. However, their diverse functions need to be balanced based on spatial limitations and varying stakeholder preferences. Integrated planning approaches are needed to exploit the multiple benefits of UGSs. This study introduces a multi-objective decision-support model designed to optimize UGS planning by simultaneously addressing carbon sequestration, ecological connectivity, and cost constraints. The model incorporates the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II to identify Pareto-optimal solutions for tailored decision-making strategies that balance different priorities. The model indicated that ecological connectivity can be improved by 7.57 % while meeting carbon-reduction and budgetary targets. The model effectively balanced trade-offs, underscoring the importance of both the quantity and strategic placement of green space. This decision-support framework empowers decision-makers to rapidly simulate and validate optimal scenarios, effectively balance competing objectives, and provide a scientific basis through verifiable feedback, ultimately promoting the development of sustainable urban environments.

Influences of COVID-19 pandemic on travel patterns across past, present, and future

As societies strive to return to pre-COVID-19 norms, there's growing recognition of the profound changes people have experienced over the past two and a half years. This has prompted discussions on how to shape future transportation strategies to align with evolving lifestyles. Understanding people's travel patterns before, during, and after the pandemic is crucial for shaping post-pandemic actions. This study investigates the relationship between travel patterns across these phases, with a focus on the pandemic's mediating effects. Using structural equation modelling and data from 7,613 U.S. survey responses, we uncover noteworthy shifts in travel behaviour dynamics. During the pandemic, policy measures and sociodemographic factors significantly influenced travel. However, these effects may diminish as measures are lifted and vulnerabilities no longer correlate with sociodemographics. In contrast, past travel behaviour and attitudes, especially favouring alternative modes of transportation, are expected to have a more enduring impact in the post-pandemic era. This shift is likely to emerge 'strengthened new normal,' especially among those who reduced travel and embraced alternative modes. Future travel policies should anticipate and accommodate these evolving dynamics. Promoting diverse transportation modes beyond private vehicles will be crucial as travel behaviour undergoes transformation. Thus, policy formulation should consider a range of scenarios to address these changing preferences and behaviours.

Distribution of tree species is a function of climatic (such as temperature and precipitation) and topographic (such as altitude, slope, and exposure) parameters. It is thought that any change in climatic parameters would be one of the most effective factors to influence the distribution of species. The adaptation of populations would depend on the phenotypic variation, strength of selection, interspecies competition, and biotic interactions. Moreover, many ecologic and anthropogenic processes that are related with each other would affect the distance of distribution. Hence, the detailed and reliable information about the geographical distribution of species under changing climate conditions is of significant importance for various ecologic and protection practices. For this reason, the present study focused on the estimation and analysis of the potential distribution of Anatolian boxwood in different scenarios (SSPS245 and SSPS585) and the estimation and analysis of environmental factors influencing this distribution. Using the current and future (2040-2060-2080-2100) climate scenarios, the habitats that are suitable for the distribution of Anatolian boxwood in Turkey were modeled using the maximum entropy model and then mapped using ArcGIS software. In determining the potential distribution areas, 21 parameters (19 bioclimatic and 2 topographic variables) were used in 21 field-based formation points. The results showed that the most important variables affecting the distribution of species were annual mean temperature (Bio1), minimum temperature of the coldest month (Bio6), mean temperature of the coldest quartile (Bio11), precipitation of the driest month (Bio14), precipitation of the driest quartile (Bi017), and precipitation of the warmest quartile (Bio18). Earning our place, more or less: responsibility's flexible relationship with desert in socioeconomic standing

I use a nationally representative survey to determine whether and which Americans associate personal responsibility with economic desert. Philosophers actively debate this relationship, but social scientists routinely take it for granted, foisting this assumed relationship on the people they study. Respondents, I find, generally want their economic fates to rest on criteria for which they are (or appear) personally responsible, but they express this belief with varying levels of conviction and with two notable exceptions. The first involves specific determinants of economic status. Respondents are divided on whether individuals exert control over their intelligence, creativity, health, and educational pedigree, but they are generally comfortable with the first two affecting peoples' economic standing. The second concerns who considers personal responsibility morally relevant to economic status. Neoliberals, chiefly concerned with economic growth, are significantly less insistent that individuals be personally responsible for their economic standing. Same for non-white, lower income, and older respondents, and respondents from elite schools, though to a lesser degree. At best, ideal paths to economic success and ruin are moderately associated with personal agency, though many are weakly correlated. So it goes with respondents' overall correlations between perceived control over economic determinants and the ideal-importance of those factors to economic standing. Researchers must look beyond their preferred philosophical dispositions and investigate justice as it is envisioned and lived by their subjects.

A multi-objective optimization approach to simultaneously halve water consumption, CH4, and N2O emissions while maintaining rice yield

Sustainable rice farming practices are urgently needed to meet increasing food demand, cope with water scarcity, and mitigate climate change. Traditional farming methods that prioritize a single objective, such as increasing crop yield, reducing irrigation water consumption, or minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, have proven to be insufficient. Simultaneously optimizing multiple competing rice farming objectives remains less explored. The present study aimed to increase current rice yield, reduce irrigation water consumption, and tackle the dilemma to reduce GHG (CH4 and N2O) emissions at once. Using a heuristic and holistic method, we optimized farm management, focusing on irrigation regimes, sowing window, fertilization rate, tillage depth, and their interactions. We calibrated and validated the process-based DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC) model with 5 years of eddy covariance observations in a rice paddy site. The DNDC model was integrated with a Pareto-based non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-III) to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. Results show that current farm management practices have failed to achieve the potential yield and imposed high environmental costs in the form of water use (604-810 mm/yr) and GHG emissions (CH4: 186-220 kg C/ha/yr;N2O: 0.3-1.6 kg C/ha/yr). By contrast, our new approach suggested that the optimized management could maintain or even increase current crop yield to its potential (-10 t/ha), while reducing irrigation demand and GHG emissions by >50 %. Our results suggest that earlier sowing, combined with improved irrigation practices, may play a crucial role in maximizing crop yield and potentially providing environmental benefits. We found that the optimal proportion of non-flooded days was around 54 % of the growing season length, and the optimal stage for non-flooding days was the vegetative stage. Investigation of gamma-ray radiation shielding properties of zinc borate and paraffin filled sheep wool biopolymer composites: Experimental and theoretical analysis

The present study examines the potential of sheep wool biopolymer composites filled with zinc borate and paraffin wax additives as a gamma-ray radiation shielding material. The selected novel composite samples were prepared with varying proportions of additive materials (10, 20, 30, and 40 wt%) so that impact of the additive amount on radiation shielding could be properly analyzed. Evaluations of specimens were performed at different energy levels ranging from 20 keV to 1.3325 MeV with help of a NaI scintillation detector, MC simulation (GEANT4) and WinXCOM theoretical calculation code. Following the production of shielding samples, the characterization and structural evaluation was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE- SEM /EDX) supported by EDAX energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of additives into composite materials enhances the gamma attenuation capacity. The optimal gamma shielding performance is achieved with a 40 wt% ZnB40 composition, which exhibits superior shielding efficacy at lower gamma-ray energies. The MAC value of ZnB40 at 20 keV is about 2.7343 times higher than one of ZnB10 while it is about 1.2675 times greater at 80.9 keV. Moreover, it can be safely said that ZnB40 material can be a suitable option for insulating dentist rooms or buildings that require the use of regular aprons.

A notable shortcoming in contemporary digital navigation systems is their failure to incorporate live weather data. This study investigates the possibility of improving urban navigation experiences by integrating real-time weather data. We developed a navigation tool that utilizes weather data from the OpenWeather API, providing users with real-time insights into weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure. This tool enables users to make informed decisions about their routes and travel plans by providing updated temperature information for selected routes and assessing the risk of road sections based on weather conditions. Incorporating weather data into navigation systems has the potential to enhance driving safety, minimize travel durations, and alleviate weather-related disturbances in urban settings.

Refugee tents are essential temporary shelters in disaster-prone regions like Aceh, Indonesia, which experiences a warm and humid tropical climate. Ensuring thermal comfort in these shelters is crucial for the well-being and recovery of displaced individuals. This study evaluates the thermal comfort of refugee tents deployed in Aceh through a combination of field measurements and computational simulations using Ansys Fluent 19.2 (CFD software). Field measurements captured real-time environmental data, including temperature, humidity, and airflow inside and around the tents. Thermal comfort was assessed using the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 03-6572-2001) through Effective Temperature (ET), and the ASHRAE 55 through Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD). This study also analyzed the thermal performance of alternative tent configurations designed to improve thermal comfort in tropical climates. Two new tent designs were proposed: one with rooftop openings to release trapped hot air and another with both upper ventilation and a double-layer outer skin with a 10 cm air gap. The results show that the tent with upper ventilation reduces the air temperature by approximately 0.5 K and increases air speed by around 0.18 m/s. The design combining upper ventilation and a double skin achieves a greater temperature reduction of 2.9 K compared to the outside environment, with a faster airflow than ventilation alone. These findings highlight the importance of advanced ventilation strategies and thermal insulation in improving indoor environments, offering valuable insights for future refugee tent designs aimed at enhancing thermal comfort.

In this essay, Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece considers how criticism, spectatorship, and the markers of the procedural overlap in a contemporary moment where leisure has been ceded to work. By reading across multiple objects, from MovieTok film and television reviews and YouTube video essays, to prestige film and television, to Marxist provocations, to cultural criticism, this essay argues that simply looking at media has been replaced by an obsessive drive toward content creation. Because watchers in late capitalism are encouraged always to produce and never to sit still, the liberatory potential of spectatorship has rapidly eroded into a race to treat every film and television show as a puzzle to be decoded rather than a mystery of ultimately unsolvable contemplation.

Flexural-gravity wave interaction with undulating bottom topography in the presence of uniform current: An asymptotic approach

Using an asymptotic method, this article deals with flexural-gravity wave scattering with undulating bottom topography, including the effect of uniform currents. The interest in this problem lies in developing second-order solutions using the Fourier transform, which minimises the error gap between first and second-order solutions. The present method allows the physical processes involved in the sea-bed topography, uniform current, plate-covered surface, and wave interaction to be studied. Specifically, we observe Bragg resonance between the flexural-gravity waves and the bottom ripples, which are associated with the reflection of incident wave energy. We examine the effects of wave current and emphasise how crucial the asymptotic expansion method is to the emergence of the current response. We demonstrate that bottom topography dominates the effects of Bragg resonance for depth Froude numbers valued at 0.8 or less. Further, most reflected wave components have their frequencies shifted by the current, and wave action conservation causes reflected wave energy to be enhanced for following currents. Using the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project spectrum and the discrete Fourier transform, the theory derived in the frequency domain is shown in the time domain to analyse wave propagation through the whole system. © 2024
