Voice handicap prevalence among healthcare workers in China and Indonesia

This study investigated the prevalence of voice disorders among healthcare workers in China and Indonesia. A questionnaire was administered to 721 healthcare workers, with 411 from China and 310 from Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire assessed vocal-related symptoms, perceived voice handicap, frequently heard noise sources, and the quality of communications. The results revealed that the most frequently reported symptoms were 'voice tiredness' (20.5 %) and 'clearing the throat' (18.3 %). Specifically, 19.4 % of Chinese healthcare workers experienced voice-related symptoms, whereas only 6.3 % of Indonesians reported such symptoms. Longer working hours and working years were significantly associated with voice-related symptoms. Furthermore, the healthcare workers in China and Indonesia both reported mild (<30) voice disorders based on the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-30). Approximately one-fourth (23.8 %) of healthcare workers in China had VHI-30 scores exceeding 30, compared to only 7 % in Indonesia. The differences in vocal-related symptoms and voice handicap between the two countries were significant. Healthcare workers with 50-60 working hours per week exhibited higher scores than those working 40-50 h per week in both countries. Additionally, communication quality and the severity of voice problems for healthcare workers in China were worse than in Indonesia during the pandemic.

Market vendor involvement in the rotary bio-waste composter design: the case of Baguio City, Philippines

Bio-waste generation in public markets is affected by the influx of people coming in due to the variety of products available. However, a large volume of these products often gets spoiled on-site. While there is a plethora of research on management schemes for bio-wastes, limited studies address the design of composters for market wastes. Thus, this study was conducted to develop a bio-waste composter involving the knowledge, attitude, and perception of market vendors. Through the participation of 225 market vendors that have responded in the survey, it was revealed that there is a low level of compliance with composting activity in the market, despite the majority of the participants manifesting knowledge of the open composting method. The design of a rotary composter was conceptualized based on the participants' perception, which focused on essential components of natural decomposition, such as aeration, mixing, odor control, and temperature. Finally, a waste management framework was constructed that is geared towards a circular economy at the micro-scale level to realize the potential of this study. Indeed, the conducted study yielded an interesting interchange of the participants' knowledge, attitude, and perception that have led to the development of a waste management system using simple methods.

Perceived discrimination, transit use, and walking behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from the Understanding America Study

A rise in reporting and media coverage of negative social interactions and experiences of racism in transit and other public environments suggests that perceived discrimination may have affected the travel behavior and health of people of color during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, to examine relationships between race, perceived discrimination, transit use, and walking behavior, we draw on data collected in 20 waves of the Understanding America Study (UAS) COVID-19 tracking survey, fielded July 2020-July 2021. Importantly, we find that transit use among minorities continued during the pandemic at higher rates, especially among Black and Hispanic respondents, despite non-White respondents reporting more frequent perceptions of discrimination. Our linear mixed-effect model results further indicate that non-White respondents were notably more likely to use transit. Examining walking behavior, we find that White and Asian respondents consistently reported more walking than Black and Hispanic respondents, even when controlling for income. Crucially, we found that in the presence of controls, while large disparities were observed in both walking and transit behavior based on race, perceived discrimination had little to no effect. While disparities in travel behavior based on race are evidently better explained by structural factors as opposed to overt, individual-level discrimination, planners, policymakers, and designers should nevertheless give greater consideration to micro- and macro-scale interventions that facilitate safe transit use and walking for racial and ethnic minorities.

Evaluation of spatial and temporal variability in Sentinel-2 surface reflectance on a rice paddy landscape

High spatial resolution spaceborne remote sensing systems provide a new data source for agricultural applications. As a key deliverable, surface reflectance (SR) enables immediate and non-destructive estimation of crop status, thus the demand for reliable pixelwise SR is increasing. However, the evaluations are typically conducted on pseudo-invariant areas and the reliability of pixelwise SR has not been thoroughly examined over heterogenous, dynamic surfaces. In this study, we evaluated pixelwise Sentinel-2 (S2) SR on a rice paddy landscape across seasons using drone-based hyperspectral images and tower-based continuous hyperspectral observations as the ground references. We also examined the impact of spatial and atmospheric properties on S2 SR. Overall, S2 SR showed strong linear relationships with the ground references (the overall R2 > 0.8). The residual errors were influenced by sub-pixel geolocation errors (0.01-0.017 (2.1-11.8 %)), a widen PSF (0.007 (7.6 %) for red) and underestimated AOT retrievals (0.027 (40.7 %) for blue). Notably, atmospheric adjacency effects broadened the PSF, causing the consistency of S2 with the ground reference image to depend on the landscape's heterogeneity. Our findings outlined the key factors contributing to uncertainties in S2 SR, which could affect downstream products like vegetation indices and leaf area index. Considering these factors would enhance remote sensing of landscapes with high contrast in reflectance and elevated aerosol loadings, such as urban, savanna, wetland and dry agricultural land.

The Life Satisfaction of Insiders and Outsiders: Exploring Residents' and Tourists' (Dis)satisfaction in the Korean Demilitarised Zone Border Area

Satisfaction with one's place of residence significantly impacts satisfaction with life, and tourists' visit satisfaction also enhances individuals' well-being. This study explores the impact of residential and visit satisfaction on overall life satisfaction in a rural border area near the Korean Demilitarised Zone, currently facing population decline. Through an analysis of 16 area-specific attributes, the research underscores the pivotal role of social factors and landscapes in shaping satisfaction for both residents and tourists. Social interaction was found to be the crucial factor, emphasising the paramount importance of resident interactions in these seemingly isolated rural border areas. Particularly noteworthy is the profound impact of residents' emotional solidarity on tourists' visit satisfaction, a phenomenon intricately linked to the active involvement of the local community in managing tourist attractions. Additionally, for residents, satisfaction with various residential attributes is more likely to affect diverse aspects of life, underscoring the multifaceted influence of residential satisfaction. In contrast, tourists' attributes satisfaction of visited area indirectly affects their life satisfaction through overall visit satisfaction. This integrated approach, encompassing both residents' subjective judgements and tourists' objective evaluations, proves invaluable in declining population areas where tourism plays a pivotal role in regional revitalisation.

Background and aims: Hybrid atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation is a therapeutic option in non-paroxysmal AF. Our study examines cardiac mechanics changes after hybrid AF ablation plus epicardial closure of left atrial appendage (LAA). Methods: All consecutive patients undergoing hybrid AF ablation at UZ Brussel were evaluated. They received pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), posterior wall isolation (LAPWI), and epicardial LAA closure. Left atrium (LA) and Left ventricle (LV) mechanics were analyzed, with the following measures obtained at baseline, post-ablation, and follow-up: 1) volumes (EDV, ESV);2) ejection fraction (EF);3) strain (ENDO GCS, ENDO GLS);4) forces (LVLF, LVsysLF, LVim, LVs). Results: A total of 50 patients were included. At follow-up, LAEDV decreased from baseline [44.7 mL vs 53.8 mL, P = 0.025]. LA ENDO GCS and GLS increased post-ablation, with further GLS improvement at follow-up. LV ENDO GCS and LV ENDO GLS also rose post-ablation [-26.7% vs. -22.5%, P < 0.001] and [-20.57% vs. -16.6%, P < 0.001], respectively. LVEF increased post-ablation [54.6% vs 46.3%, P < 0.001]. There was an increase in all LV hemodynamic forces (HDFs) and in particular: LVLF and LVsysLF increased post-ablation [15.5% vs 10.4%, P < 0.001] and [21.5% vs 14.11%, P < 0.001], respectively. LVim also increased post-ablation [19.6% vs 12.8%, P < 0.001]. Finally, there was an increase in LVs post-ablation compared to baseline [10.6% vs 5.4%, P < 0.001]. Conclusion: In patients undergoing hybrid AF ablation, there was a significant and persistent improvement in the mechanical and hemodynamic functions of both LA and LV.

This research presents a strategy to enhancing sound absorption in porous acoustic metamaterials through the optimization of micro-duct networks. The study employs a combination of analytical and numerical methods, systematically adjusting micro-duct diameters within a 2D grid to optimize absorption coefficients at specific frequency bands. The Finite Element Transfer Method (FETM) is utilized for modeling, supported by a multi-objective function influenced by the surface impedance of the network. This approach ensures practical applicability and manufacturability of the designed metamaterial. A significant aspect of the study is the development of an analytical mobility matrix for each microduct, integrated through the Transfer Matrix Method using the visco-thermal dissipation theory. This integration results in a physically coherent model, for which a semi-analytical sensitivity analysis related to the microduct diameters can be directly performed. The optimization employs the Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA), effectively managing the complexity associated with a large number of design variables. Subsequently, the optimized structure is adapted into a 3D grid, facilitating prototype creation using Additive Manufacturing Technology (AMT) with a specific polymer material. The research methodology is validated through four distinct test cases, each demonstrating the efficacy and adaptability of the optimization tools and techniques. Experimental validation, conducted using an impedance tube, indicates a significant shift in the first absorption maximum from 2500 Hz to 1000 Hz, achieved without altering the material thickness. Additional validation through 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling, which includes visco-thermal effects, further confirms the acoustic efficiency of the final designs. Semi-arid cities in the borderlands of the southwestern United States of America are becoming critical frontiers in the socio-ecological challenges emerging at the confluence of climate change, social justice, and sustainable development. While the emerging literature emphasizes the potential role of circular food systems, there has been little scholarly and policy attention to circular food-oriented Community-based Organizations (CBOs) in medium-sized semi-arid cities experiencing intense drought and growing social inequalities. Using an exploratory qualitative design, this paper examined the circular food practices of three major CBOs in Tucson, Arizona. Through in-depth interviews with staff and volunteers and on-site observations, the study found that circular food practices in Tucson are implemented to address social, environmental, and economic challenges facing marginalized populations. Our paper illuminates how localizing circular food systems generates co-benefits that support sustainable development by reducing food waste, reusing excess products, and repurposing by-products. This paper provides new insights for environmental policymakers and planners to support the development of synergies and linkages among CBOs, enhance resource capacity, and integrate circular food practices to foster equity-focused sustainable development of semi-arid cities confronted with socio-ecological stressors. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Innovation and Well-Being in Indigenous Entrepreneurship in Indonesia: A Capability Approach

This study explores how innovation occurs in Indigenous entrepreneurship and its effects on the well-being of Indigenous communities in Indonesia, a country in the Global South. Previous research indicates that innovation can occur in Indigenous entrepreneurship. However, there is a lack of understanding about how innovation impacts the well-being of Indigenous communities, particularly at the individual level. The capability approach provides a valuable framework for addressing this issue, considering the unique characteristics of Indigenous communities. We conducted a qualitative comparative case study in the regions of Pringgasela and Lepo Lorun. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with community leaders and entrepreneurs from two different Indigenous communities with diverse social contexts and types of businesses. Our research shows that understanding how Indigenous entrepreneurs assess innovation helps identify their unique values in innovation efforts. These values are driven not only by economic profits but also by the preservation of cultural heritage. Cultural well-being is not just a desired outcome but also a mechanism that allows individuals to participate in collective learning and innovation endeavours.

Empirical modeling of torsional strength in reinforced concrete beams using iterated local search with semantic cluster operator

This study conducted a data-based analysis on the impact of a feature and empirical modeling to increase the accuracy of analytical models related to torsional strength. The torsional strength data of 324 plain and reinforced concrete beams were collected from previous studies, which included data from specimens with various cross-sectional sizes, material strengths, reinforcement ratios, and cover thicknesses. The data was clustered to analyze the effect of each feature, and the importance of each feature was derived using the Shapley additive explanations technique. An iterated local search using a semantic cluster operator was used to derive simple and highly accurate empirical models to predict the torsional strength. The proposed models predicted the ultimate strength by multiplying the contribution of concrete and transverse reinforcement, contrary to the current codes, and showed better accuracy than the existing models.
