In this work, a 3D -printed plasmonic chip based on a silver -gold bilayer was developed in order to enhance the optical response of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) probe. More specifically, numerical and experimental results were obtained on the 3D -printed SPR platform based on a silver -gold bilayer. Then, the optimized probe's gold plasmonic interface was functionalized with a specific antibody directed against the p27Kip1 protein (p27), an important cell cycle regulator. The 3D -printed plasmonic biosensor was tested for p27 detection with good selectivity and a detection limit of 55 pM. The biosensor system demonstrated performance similar to commercially available ELISA (enzyme -linked immunoassay) kits, with several advantages, such as a wide detection range and a modular and simple -based architecture. The proposed biosensing technology offers flexible deployment options that are useful in disposable, low-cost, small -size, and simple -to -use biochips, envisaging future applications in experimental and biomedical research. Performance of wildlife fence systems under animal impact load

Wildlife fence protection systems specifically designed for animal protection are critical in mitigating wildlife-vehicle collisions and preserving animal habitats. These systems are quite similar to rockfall barrier systems, which are well studied and developed, however, few studies are specifically oriented toward investigating structural performance of these systems. Despite the similarities, results of studies related to rockfall barriers may not be directly applicable to design and performance evaluation of wildlife barrier systems due to differences in a range of size, shape, and velocity of impactors and structural details. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing performance and capacity of wildlife structures in more detail through parametric study with consideration of a wide range of properties and structural details appropriate for these systems, such as mesh type (square and inclined), mesh size, and wire diameters. The behavior of these systems under impact loads is simulated using nonlinear finite element models with consideration of ductile damage and element removal techniques to accurately capture wire rupture and changes in the impactor-fence system interface. The results demonstrate that the response of the system is highly influenced by factors such as mesh type, opening size, wire diameter, and impactor size. Notably, the system utilizing an inclined mesh type exhibits a 35 % higher failure velocity, 50 % greater energy dissipation, and 21 % less maximum displacement compared to the square mesh system. The detailed results and discussions in this study provide valuable insights into the influence of individual parameters on the behavior of wildlife fence systems, aiding in the design of more efficient wildlife barrier systems with enhanced performance.

Evaluation of Optimal Mechanical Ventilation Strategies for Schools for Reducing Risks of Airborne Viral Infection

Ventilation systems are one of the most effective strategies to reduce the risk of viral infection transmission in buildings. However, insufficient ventilation rates in crowded spaces, such as schools, would lead to high risks of infection transmission. On the other hand, excessive ventilation rates might significantly increase cooling energy consumption. Therefore, energy-efficient control methods, such as Demand Control Ventilation systems (DCV), are typically considered to maintain acceptable indoor air quality. However, it is unclear if the DCV-based controls can supply adequate ventilation rates to minimize the probability of infection (POI) in indoor spaces. This paper investigates the benefits of optimized ventilation strategies, including conventional mechanical systems (MV) and DCV, in reducing the POI and cooling energy consumption through a detailed sensitivity analysis. The study also evaluates the impact of the ventilation rate, social distancing, and number of infectors on the performance of the ventilation systems. A coupling approach of a calibrated energy model of a school building in Jeddah, KSA, with a validated Wells-Riley model is implemented. Based on the findings of this study, proper adjustment of the DCV set point is necessary to supply adequate ventilation rates and reduce POI levels. Moreover, optimal values of 2 ACH for ventilation rate and 2 m for social distance are recommended to deliver acceptable POI levels, cooling energy use, and indoor CO2 concentration for the school building. Finally, this study confirms that increasing the ventilation rate is more effective than increasing social distancing in reducing the POI levels. However, this POI reduction is achieved at the cost of a higher increase in the cooling energy.

For the last decade when travelling the majority of people rely on cars. To this extent, every public building has the obligation to provide parking area. In transport studies, a long-standing debate has been arguing about in what ways the role of travel mode choices contributes to the association between built environment and travel behaviour. In regard to the presence of the new MRT system in Jakarta, this paper is to review the literature for a theoretical exploration study about how people make their travel mode decision from private cars to public transport. Focusing on travel-to-work behaviour, the study identifies comfort, awareness, location, time management, cost, regulation, and pre-planned activities as attributes which influence travel mode choice. In addition, socio-demographics characteristics and pre-condition habits on using public transport describe how individuals view the attributes. This paper proposes awareness of public transport strategy for the stakeholders. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The escalating threat of urban pluvial flooding, driven by increasing heavy rainfall and global urbanization, necessitates the development of reliable and efficient urban flood modeling techniques. Optimal sewershed delineation within semi-distributed hydrological models has become crucial in urban hydrology. Conventional watershed delineation methods, which primarily rely on natural topography, often fall short in urban settings where human-made drainage systems significantly influence stormwater flow. While local governments ordinarily use pre-defined sewershed maps for stormwater management practices, limited access to this geographical data or its low spatial resolution poses challenges for urban flood research. To overcome these obstacles, this study presents a heuristic approach to urban sewershed delineation. This method involves identifying and compartmentalizing the target sewershed into smaller sub-sewersheds using only publicly accessible information such as trunk sewer layouts, road networks, and land use/land cover maps. The heuristic sewershed model demonstrated satisfactory or superior performance (0.60 < NSE < 0.91, 0.31 < RSR < 0.63, -8.8 % < PBIAS<13.9 %) during calibration and validation against observed sewer flow depths at multiple locations in Seoul's Gangnam district, South Korea. The findings indicate that heuristic sewershed delineation can achieve model accuracy comparable to that of government-defined sewershed models. By minimizing dependency on confidential urban drainage network data, the heuristic approach strikes a balance between model performance and parsimony while still achieving reliable results. The proposed heuristic approach can leverage local knowledge, contributing to sustainable stormwater management practices and urban flood risk reduction.

Cost and risk optimization is a central issue in the offshore Oil and Gas sector, and risk-based approaches has been more and more employed to assist the segment in the concretization of that goal. In this sense, the use of Risk Based Inspection by the oil industry has increased. The inspection procedure aims mitigating the uncertainty related to the asset degradation state, enabling a better quantification of the actual damage, and, consequently, increasing the accuracy of remaining life projections. However, the costs involved in offshore subsea inspections are considerable. Therefore, the optimization of inspection plans plays a crucial role in the definition of an asset management program economically balanced. To perform an efficient optimization, it is important not only obtain an effective optimization algorithm but also achieve a high quality of the information used as input. In other words, an adequate definition of the risk indexes used is necessary, as well as the entire process used to quantify them. In this context, this paper presents a framework for obtaining the optimized inspection plans, starting from the assessment of the risk associated with the failure modes, moving on through the process of defining risk indices and, finally, presenting the optimization process itself. In this way, the framework proposed presents all the phases necessary to obtain optimized inspection plans, including the stage of preparation for the optimization process. Finally, the application of the proposed framework is illustrated by the elaboration of the inspection plans for a subsea manifold. Copyright © 2023 by ASME.

Transglutaminase Crosslinked Gelatin Films Extracted from Tanned Leather Waste

The production of biodegradable polymers has proved to be a promising alternative, since these materials have accelerated degradation, contributing to the reduction of residues and the reduction of environmental pollution. The tannery wastes contain considerable collagen and can be used for gelatin extraction and film production for use in agriculture. Gelatin-based films, however, present some challenges for practical application, such as permeability and solubility in water, parameters that can be improved through the crosslinking process by employing enzymes, promoting the union of polymeric gelatin chains. In this context, the action of the enzyme transglutaminase was investigated to improve the properties of gelatin films recovered from leather and chitosan residues, which were evaluated according to thickness, solubility, permeability, mechanical properties, and soil degradation. The results indicated that the enzyme concentration in the films had a significant effect on the properties of water permeability and solubility and strain to rupture. The evaluation of soil degradation showed that films with higher enzyme addition took longer to be degraded.

A significant silence: Single mothers and the current Israeli housing discourse

I investigate the place given to Israeli single mothers' families and their right to the city in current housing discourses and state decisions. I discuss their right to appropriation-to be in the city and to occupy and make use of urban space. I also focus on their right to "difference" - namely, to have their identity and their difficulty in obtaining and securing housing fully considered in policy processes, and not to be pushed out of the social and geographic center of the country. Following the 2011 nationwide protests, the Israeli government promoted housing reforms, and housing programs became a major issue for politicians and the media. However, I demonstrate that there has been silence regarding single mothers, evident in several ways. First, policy criteria and most discourses are gender neutral and refer only to 'single parents'. Second, the mothers are framed in two opposing, simplistic categories-either as part of the weakest population or conversely as regular middle-class families. program decisions provide only partial solutions. They also require single mothers to choose between the right to occupy a house and to difference. Using this case, I exemplify how Israel's current housing agenda subjects the right to the city to neoliberal ideas and the overall aims of the state.

The global climate change events are expected to augment the vulnerability of persistent organic pollutants within the global brownfield areas to a certain extent, consequently heightening the risk crises faced by these brownfields amidst the backdrop of global environmental changes. However, studies addressing brownfield risks from the perspective of climate change have received limited attention. Nonetheless, the detrimental consequences of brownfield risks are intrinsically linked to strategies for mitigating and adapting to sustainable urban development, emphasizing the critical importance of their far-reaching implications. This relevance extends to concerns about environmental quality, safety, health risks, and the efficacy of chosen regeneration strategies, including potential secondary pollution risks. This comprehensive review systematically surveys pertinent articles published between 1998 and 2023. A selective analysis was conducted on 133 articles chosen for their thematic relevance. The findings reveal that: (1) Under the backdrop of the climate change process, brownfield restoration is necessitated to provide scientific and precise guidance. The integration of brownfield considerations with the dynamics of climate change has progressively evolved into a unified framework, gradually shaping a research paradigm characterized by "comprehensive + multi-scale + quantitative" methodologies;(2) Research themes coalesce into five prominent clusters: "Aggregation of Brownfield Problem Analysis", "Precision Enhancement of Brownfield Identification through Information Technology", "Diversification of Brownfield Reutilization Assessment", "Process-Oriented Approaches to Brownfield Restoration Strategies", and "Expansion of Ecological Service Functions in Brownfield Contexts";(3) Application methodologies encompass five key facets: "Temporal and Spatial Distribution Patterns of Pollutants", "Mechanisms and Correlations of Pollution Effects", "Evaluation of Pollutio

The quality of concrete is influenced by fine aggregate. Lightweight concrete contains only fine aggregates. Tiles are one of lightweight concrete. The physical characteristics of fine aggregate need to be understood if you want to make a tile. For tiles to re-compete and attractive to use as home flooring, it is necessary to study to make light and aesthetic concrete tiles strong and aesthetic. This research is intended to make lightweight concrete based tiles. This research used the exploration method. The data begins with the selection of materials, work tools, and stages of manufacture. Information from various sources is captured and interpreted into a creative idea. The basic concept is done and developed pragmatically on the shape of the tile. The process of analysis is done qualitatively, so we get the form of tile. The tile shape is transformed from the parameters to the lightweight concrete-based tiles. This study concluded that the lightweight concrete-based tile material is made with the following stages: Preparation of work tools and work materials, basic coating, top-coating, printing, fresh tile removal, drying, polishing, as well as the application of resin oil.
