Metallurgical slags can be re-evaluated depending on their structural properties for reuse in many industrial applications. This study investigated the possibility of reusing these slags as a commercial value. The results of benchmark research comparing the friction and wear behavior of basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS) and commercial wear-resistant coating against an Al2O3 counter body under dry conditions are presented in this work. Reciprocating wear tests were carried out on WC-CoCr, and slag coatings were deposited on 316L stainless steel substrates under different loads and sliding speeds. The wear track surfaces were compared using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and a 3D optical profilometer for wear-depth and wear-loss measurements. As a result of the experimental studies carried out, it was observed that BOFS coatings exhibited an appealingly superior wear performance. The study results showed that coatings with BOFS content could be used as an alternative candidate coating material equivalent to the wear-resistant coatings used in commercial and industrial areas in terms of performance.

Diversity analysis, distribution and abundance of mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) assemblages at urban sector from southwestern Colombia

The Culicidae family (mosquitoes) has great relevance worldwide, due to its involvement in generating several diseases. The Department of Cauca in Colombia is characterized as a region with the influence of several vector-borne diseases. This study aims to analyze the ecological diversity and distribution of mosquitoes with potential transmitters of diseases in a particular urban area of the municipality of Santander de Quilichao. This is one of the first studies of its kind in this municipality. Mosquito collections were carried out during the rainy and dry seasons of 2022, between 17:00 to 19:00. Morphological keys were used for species identification. For the analysis of diversity comparison vs. sampling points, Simpson's index was used, a dendrogram, rarefaction curve, and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS). In the statistical analysis of species-abundances, ANOVA was applied to determine if there were significant differences regarding abundance. A total of 1116 culicid specimens were collected. The 59.4% were mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti, 18.5% Culex quinquefasciatus, 18.2% Aedes albopictus, and 3.9% Psorophora ferox, being the rainy season important for their survival. ANOVA analysis showed that the mean abundance of Ae. aegypti was significantly different from the other species. This study is broadly consistent with other studies in the tropical American context where the abundance of Culicidae is more representative in the rainy season. The results suggest a wide presence of Aedes mosquitoes in natural and artificial habitats, showing the importance of establishing controls and permanent epidemiological surveillance in this region.

Daylighting in school classrooms is essential to support the health, well-being, and performance of students, while minimizing electric lighting energy. However, excessive exposure to daylight may lead to visual and thermal discomfort, particularly in tropical regions where daylight is abundant all-year long. A popular daylighting design strategy to overcome this problem is implementing the combination of windows with external shading and complex fenestration systems (CFS) in the form of horizontal slats, but its application in school classrooms is seldom discussed in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to optimize the design of CFS with horizontal slats and external shading devices in tropical school buildings with a bilateral opening typology. Computational modeling and simulation are conducted, utilizing the Radiance simulation engine with the 4 PH matrix method. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to understand the impact of window-to-wall ratio (WWR), interslat spacing distance, slat angle, and shading depth on the annual daylight metrics, followed by optimization using the Wallacei optimizer. The first rank optimal design solution is a WWR of 60%, with a slat spacing of 0.2 m and a slat angle of -45 degrees for east and west fa & ccedil;ades. The optimal shading depths on the east and west fa & ccedil;ades are 2.0 and 0.6 m, respectively.

Territorial Ecological Restoration with a High-carbon Storage Focus in the Beibu Gulf Urban Agglomeration of China:Insights from Carbon Metabolism Spatial Security Patterns

Torsional Performance of Vat-Photopolymerized Tough Resin: Influence of Gauge Length and UV Post-Curing

BackgroundA myriad of materials, ranging from soft sensors to bone substitutes, undergo torsional loading throughout their operational lifespan. Many of these materials are produced using additive manufacturing (AM) technology due to its broad applicability. Understanding the torsional behavior of these AM components is crucial prior to their utilization. However, research on the torsional behavior of solid additively-manufactured resin polymers remains very *** address the gap in understanding the torsional behavior of additively-manufactured resin polymers, this study aimed to investigate the effect of varying gage lengths and UV post-curing durations on the torsional capacity, shear modulus, and energy absorption characteristics of these *** specimens were fabricated using vat photopolymerization (VPP) with AnyCubic UV Tough Resin. The specimens were prepared with different gage lengths (20, 40, 60, and 80 mm) and were subjected to five UV post-curing durations (0, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min). Monotonic torsion was applied to the specimens until failure at a rate of 0.1 revolutions per *** tests revealed ductile failure patterns across all specimens. Longer post-curing times were found to correlate with increased torsional capacities and shear moduli. However, conclusions regarding energy absorption per unit volume remained inconclusive. The results showed that UV exposure had a significantly greater impact on the mechanical properties of the specimens compared to the gage length. Additionally, a normalized trilinear model was proposed to characterize the behavior of additively-manufactured resin polymers under monotonic torsion, which facilitates numerical simulation of material responses in finite element software.

Probabilistic Risk Framework for Nuclear- and Fossil-Powered Vessels: Analyzing Casualty Event Severity and Sub-Causes

Maritime activities pose significant safety risks, particularly with the growing presence of nuclear-powered vessels (NPVs) alongside traditional fossil-powered vessels (FPVs). This study employs a probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) approach to evaluate and compare accident hazards involving NPVs and FPVs. By analyzing historical data from 1960 to 2024, this study identifies risk patterns, accident frequency (probability), and severity levels. The methodology focuses on incidents such as marine incidents, marine casualties, and very serious cases with sub-causes. Key findings reveal that Russia exhibits the highest risk for very serious incidents involving both NPVs and FPVs, with a significant 100% risk for NPVs. China has the highest FPV risk, while France and the USA show above-average risks, particularly for marine casualties and very serious incidents. Moreover, collision is the most significant global risk, with a 26% risk for NPVs and 34% for FPVs, followed by fire hazards, which also pose a major concern, with a 17% risk for NPVs and 16% for FPVs, highlighting the need for enhanced safety and fire-prevention measures. In conclusion, comparative analysis highlights the need for enhanced stability improvements, fire prevention, and maintenance practices, particularly in the UK, France, Russia, and China. This study underscores the importance of targeted safety measures to mitigate risks, improve ship design, and promote safer maritime operations for both nuclear- and fossil-fueled vessels.

Performance of Green Areas in Mitigating the Alteration of Land Surface Temperature in Urban Zones of Lima, Peru

Urbanization in large cities has altered the urban thermal balance, creating urban heat islands. In this context, green areas are crucial in regulating the urban climate. This study uses remote sensing data to evaluate their performance using the fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and its impact on land surface temperature (LST) in Metropolitan Lima, Peru, between 1986 and 2024. The spatial and temporal relationship between FVC and LST is analyzed, and districts are classified based on their effectiveness in thermal regulation. The Mann-Kendall test was applied to identify trends along with a Spearman correlation analysis and a clustering analysis to group districts according to the cooling effectiveness of their urban green areas. The results show that urban expansion has increased LST by an average of 6.43 degrees C since 1990, and there is a significant negative correlation (p < 0.001) between FVC and LST, indicating positive impacts of vegetation regulating LST at a spatial level. However, it does not reduce LST at a temporal level. This suggests that, while effective locally, green areas are insufficient to counteract the overall warming of LST over time. Based on FVC and LST characteristics, the districts have been classified into four groups: those with well-preserved green areas, such as La Molina and San Isidro, which have a lower LST, compared to areas where urbanization has replaced vegetation, such as Carabayllo and Lurigancho (Chosica). Finally, this study highlights the importance of integrating green area management into urban planning to mitigate urban warming and promote sustainable development.

Approach to Enhancing Panoramic Segmentation in Indoor Construction Sites Based on a Perspective Image Segmentation Foundation Model

Panoramic images in indoor construction sites are gaining attention as valuable tools for process monitoring and quality assessment. However, despite the environmental complexity and the demand for high segmentation performance in indoor construction environments, the scarcity of specialized segmentation models and datasets has created a gap between technological advancements and practical application, thus hindering the effective utilization of panoramic images. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel approach leveraging the Segment Anything Model (SAM), a perspective image segmentation foundation model, to enhance the performance of existing segmentation models. The proposed method iteratively executes SAM with adjusted input parameters to extract objects of varying sizes and subsequently applies filtering algorithms to retain valid objects. Then, label assignment and merging processes are performed based on the predictions from the target model to improve segmentation accuracy. The experimental study was conducted using Panoplane360, a model specifically designed for plane segmentation, as the target model. A quantitative evaluation was conducted to measure the exactness of label assignment, and two qualitative evaluations were performed to assess whether the assigned labels accurately represent the actual planar information. The evaluation results confirmed that the proposed method significantly improves segmentation performance compared to conventional approaches. The findings of this study highlight the potential of SAM-based methods to enhance segmentation accuracy in dynamic indoor construction environments. Furthermore, the proposed approach provides practical advantages, as it improves segmentation performance without requiring the construction of additional datasets. Research has shown that driving-related stress plays a significant role in causing traffic accidents, either directly or indirectly. Motorcyclists often engage in risky driving behaviors due to elevated stress levels. This study investigates the influence of socioeconomic factors on driving stress among motorcyclists. Data were gathered from 50 participants, with heart rate (HR) recorded using the Polar Vantage V2 device. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed in both time and frequency domains using Kubios HRV software. The study employed the Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model to explore the associations between socioeconomic factors and driving stress. The results indicate that variables such as age, gender, education level, occupation, income, driving experience, and travel purpose significantly affect stress levels across both HRV domains. These findings highlight the importance of addressing motorcyclist stress through targeted interventions, including educational programs and policy measures that regulate driving duration. Such strategies are particularly vital in developing countries to reduce stress and improve road safety. This research provides a foundation for developing practical solutions aimed at minimizing driving stress and enhancing the well-being of motorcyclists in high-risk environments. center dot A MIMIC model was applied to analyze the relationship between stress variables in the time and frequency domains based on HRV data. center dot The model identified significant causal relationships, emphasizing the pivotal role of socioeconomic factors in influencing motorcyclists' driving stress. center dot The model demonstrated strong statistical performance with key indicators: chisquare = 38.749, GFI = 0.958, CFI = 0.982, AGFI = 0.893, TLI = 0.961, and RMSEA = 0.057, confirming its robustness and reliability.

Alternative gamma-ray shielding material: Ternary composite including polyester resin/barite/molybdenum

In the present study, ternary composites containing different proportions of barite and molybdenum and using unsaturated polyester resin as binder were produced. The gamma ray shielding characteristics of these ternary composites were investigated by experimental, theoretical and simulation processes to obtain reliable results. Herewith, RPE, mu, mu/rho, HVL, TVL, MFP and Zeff parameters for the prepared composites have been revealed. The experimental process was performed in the gamma-ray energy range of 276.4-1332.5 keV with the help of HPGe detector. In the theoretical and simulation studies carried out at the same gamma-ray energies, WinXCOM and GEANT4 were used, respectively. Data produced by three different methods were compared and it was seen that there was agreement between them. The mu values of the coded as BaMo50 composite are 0.4935,0.4464, 0.3824, 0.3586, 0.2908, 0.2478, 0.1799, 0.1721 and 0.1682 cm-1, respectively at 276.4, 302.9, 356.0, 383.9, 511.0, 661.7, 1173.2, 1274.5 and 1332.5 keV. It has been observed that the values of RPE, mu/rho, mu and Zeff parameters decrease with increasing gamma-ray energy and the opposite trend was observed for the HVL, TVL, and MFP parameters. The composite with the highest gamma-ray shielding capacity among all prepared ternary composites is the one coded as BaMo50.
