The COVID-19 pandemic has been harmful to survivors of abuse. Less understood is the impact on staff in the violence against women (VAW) service sector. Using interpretive description methodology, we examined staff experiences during the pandemic in Ontario, Canada, and found four core themes: (1) the emotional toll of the work;(2) remote (doesn't) work;(3) work restructuring;(4) efforts to stay well and subthemes nuancing staff experiences in a sector vulnerable to vicarious trauma. This research underscores the need to mitigate experiences of stress, heavy workloads, and guilt for staff in VAW services during crises and provides action-oriented recommendations.

Identifying Optimal Locations for Potential Temporary Community Clinics During Public Health Emergencies

Objectives: This article argues that community healthcare clinics managed by dedicated medical professionals who are familiar with the special needs of the local community may serve as effective alternatives to centralized hospitals and medical facilities, which may be disconnected from these local communities. Background: The literature indicates that socioeconomic factors that affect an individual's ability to seek medical help when needed can cause vulnerability to public health emergencies. These factors include belonging to lower income populations, being African American, being dependent due to age (below 18 or above 65) or disability, being an immigrant, English-language ability, access to transportation means, and the strength of an individual's social network. Method: This study aims at developing a multifaceted methodology to identify optimal locations for deployment of temporary healthcare clinics to address health disparity issues among socially vulnerable populations, especially during pandemics and public health crises. This case study looks at the Health Enterprise Zone (HEZ) in Baltimore and ranks Census tracts based on their vulnerability, using two novel health vulnerability indices and considering their locations. Results: Using the proposed methodology, the optimal tracts within the HEZ are identified as potential locations for deploying temporary healthcare clinics. Conclusion: The analysis of vulnerabilities to public health emergencies based on socioeconomic factors can assist in identifying potential locations for setting up temporary healthcare clinics with the goal of assisting socially vulnerable populations during outbreaks and pandemics.

To achieve the intermediate step, an aromatic polyimide (API) soluble in polar solvents was synthesized via a polycondensation reaction. The synthesized API was characterized using some characterizations. Theoretical investigations were conducted on API polymer units utilizing density functional theory (DFT). The influence of the topological structure on the photodiode's performance was examined. The API material was deposited onto p-Si through the thermal evaporation method. The electrical parameters of the fabricated structure, including the ideality factor (n) (ranging from 2.5 to 4.5), barrier height (Phi(B)) (0.70-0.35 eV), and series resistance (R-s) (4.41-169.38 k Omega), were determined via I-V measurements at varying temperatures using the TE method, as well as Cheung and Norde functions. Furthermore, the photocurrent characteristics under different light intensities at room temperature and in dark conditions were analyzed. The evaluation of photodiode and photodetector-related measurements, along with photovoltaic parameters, indicates that this material has the potential to serve as an alternative for optoelectronic applications.

Disparities in unplanned surgery amongst medicare beneficiaries

Background: While significant efforts have been made to understand surgical disparities for procedures that are performed in either the elective or unplanned settings, far less is known about procedures performed in both settings. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 1,135,743 Medicare beneficiaries undergoing incisional hernia repair, colectomy, or abdominal aortic aneurysm repair between 2014 and 2018. Risk-adjusted outcomes were assessed using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Compared to White beneficiaries, unplanned surgery rates were higher for Black (44.0%vs38.8%, OR = 1.29,p < 0.001) and Asian beneficiaries(40.4%vs38.8%,OR = 1.09,p < 0.001). While there were minimal differences in 30-day mortality for elective procedures, unplanned procedures demonstrated wider disparities (Black vs White 12.4%vs11.3%,OR = 1.11,p < 0.001;Asian vs White 13.2%vs11.3%,OR = 1.18,p < 0.001). Similar patterns were observed for readmissions. Conclusions: Unplanned procedures are more common and demonstrate wider disparities in outcomes among minority Medicare beneficiaries. Reducing unplanned surgery rates among these groups may be an effective strategy to limit overall disparities in postoperative outcomes.

In this investigation, a novel geothermal power plant was designed, combining absorption chiller units, PEMFC, EPEM, and ORC. We conducted a comprehensive case study across four continents-Asia, Oceania, Europe, and America-leveraging weather data from various cities to evaluate the system's efficacy. Our modeling utilized EES (Engineering Equation Solver) software, optimizing the setup via the RSM with three key objective functions: exergy efficiency, hydrogen production, and cost rate. The primary focus was on delivering electricity to residential properties during peak demand periods. Exploring six scenarios for organic fluids in organic Rankine cycles, we gauged energy, exergy, and overall system performance. The TOPSIS method led us to select scenario 3, employing R123 and R134a refrigerants, as the optimal choice. The results of the optimization showcased impressive figures: an exergy efficiency of 81.816%, a hydrogen production rate of 25.119 kg/h, and a cost rate of 15.967 $/h for the system's most efficient configuration. Economic analysis highlighted the organic Rankine cycle units 1 and 2 as the components with the highest costs. Our evaluation extended to various cities-Aomori, Grosseto, Lhasa, Wellington, and San Diego-assessing the electricity, heating, and cooling needs of residential complexes based on the system's performance.

Public transportation provides vital connectivity to people with disabilities, facilitating access to work, education, and health services. While modern navigation applications provide a suite of information about transit options-including real-time updates about bus or train arrivals-they lack data about the accessibility of the transit stops themselves. Bus stop features such as seatings, shelters, and landing areas are critical, but few cities provide this information. In this demo paper, we introduce BusStopCV, a Human+AI web prototype for scalably collecting data on bus stop features using real-time computer vision and human labeling. We describe BusStopCV's design, custom training with the YOLOv8 model, and an evaluation of 100 randomly selected bus stops in Seattle, WA. Our findings demonstrate the potential of BusStopCV and highlight opportunities for future work.

Using the Delphi method for selecting energy efficiency indicators in the Thailand context

The restaurant buildings have consumed less energy than other commercial buildings, directly affecting their operation cost. One approach that can reduce energy consumption in restaurants is to have criteria for evaluating energy use, but there is no such criterion in Thailand. Therefore, to achieve the criteria in the guidelines, a detailed comparison of the overseas assessment tools on the similarities and differences will be helpful to achieve the new assessment tool on restaurant buildings for Thailand by using three tools from different countries, including (1) Green Restaurant 4.0 Standards, (2) Energy Star for Restaurants, and (3) BCA Green Mark for Restaurants. The result from this study adapted the modified Delphi method to determine the consensus by ten experts on the indicators. The result shows the five indicators: (1) install roof insulation, (2) air-condition room control, (3) encourage the use of consumption for the first time, (4) duct sealing in the building, and (5) encourage to reuse of furniture had passing expert's judgment to be used as reference. The result will help develop the appropriate assessment tool for reducing overall energy consumption in Thailand. (c) 2023 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd. Urban greening is a critical strategy for sustainable urban development, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. However, the effectiveness of urban greening varies depending on the specific goals (e.g., enhancing biodiversity, reducing urban heat, or both) and their spatial implementation. To address the spatial variability in the effectiveness of greening, we propose a spatial decision support model based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). This model aims to optimize urban greening locations to maximize biomass density, mitigate urban heat stress, and simultaneously improve landscape connectivity. Applied to Suwon City, South Korea, the model's effectiveness was evaluated against a Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario across four scenarios: Connectivity-based, Biomass density-based, Heat stress-based, and an Integrated-based scenario. The integrated approach, balancing trade-offs between ecological benefits and implementation costs, outperformed the BAU scenario by 8.84%. This outcome indicated of significant improvements in biomass density and landscape connectivity, despite highlighting a weaker correlation with heat stress mitigation. Our findings underscore the necessity of an integrated planning approach to urban greening, as it can contribute toward the attainment of urban development goals. Additionally, by proposing an app-based model for policymakers to utilize, our outputs should enable the reconciliation of multiple environmental objectives in urban landscapes. © 2024, The Authors. When laboratory testing is inconvenient, numerical modelling of infilled frames is required in order to represent the elastic and inelastic behaviour of these structures. However, the choice of model is very complex, as an infilled frame is made up of various materials such as bricks, mortar, concrete and reinforcements. The most accurate approach to modelling is a technique that is capable of representing the actual behaviour of the structure. In this study, we carry out numerical analysis and compare two modelling techniques, meso and macro modelling, in terms of the structural response produced. A meso model of an infilled frame has the advantage of capturing the detailed local behaviour of the panels, but has disadvantages such as complexity and high computational load. The accuracy of the structural response modelled with a meso approach is shown to have a similarity of 98% with the test results. In contrast, macro modelling using diagonal struts can significantly reduce the analysis time without compromising the accuracy of the results. This method can also accurately reproduce the nonlinear global structural behaviour. The disadvantage of this type of model is that the resulting structural response cannot represent the local damage to the masonry panel in detail. The similarity between the behaviour of the macro model and the experimental results is shown to be 104%. We find that a meso model of the infilled frame is more responsive to the initial variables derived from test results for the materials used in the structure. This is obvious in the initial stages of creating a meso model based on test data on masonry panels, as the structural response is much closer to the test results than that of the macro model. This may be because the geometric and mechanical behaviour of the meso model is closer to the actual conditions. Post-occupancy evaluation of outdoor spaces on the campus of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil

Purpose - Using the campus of a Brazilian university as case study, this research aims to identify which aspects of the outdoor spaces are the most significant in attracting people. Design/methodology/approach - This research relies on the application of different post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methods, including user tracking, behavioural mapping and questionnaires, on one plateau of the campus. Findings - Three group of aspects (socialization, proximity and infrastructure) were identified as key elements in explaining the impact of the campus physical characteristics on users' behaviour. The results indicate that having characteristics of at least one group of aspects in those spaces can guarantee their vitality and, if there is presence of attributes of more than one group, liveliness can be increased. Research limitations/implications - Further studies should be conducted on an entire campus to identify other spatial elements in the three groups. Practical implications-This research contributes to the planning of future campuses and to solutions to the existed ones, indicating the most relevant spatial characteristics to be considered. Additionally, the combination of different methods may be useful to future research. Originality/value - Most of the investigations on the university campuses focus on the buildings, and little research has investigated the outdoor spaces, although they play a critical role in learning and academic life, where people establish social, cultural and personal relationships. In addition, studies using several POE allowed a consistent and complete diagnostic about the aspects of the campus, giving recommendations for future projects.
