Multicriteria Decision Making/Aiding (MCDM/A) techniques are usually required to solve practical decision-making problems that consider multiple criteria structured based on a value tree. Structuring criteria based on a hierarchy is common specially in problems in which the number of criteria is high, and therefore MCDM/A techniques should be prompted to deal with such situations. The well-known FITradeoff method is being widely applied for solving practical multicriteria problems due to its easiness of use and attractive flexibility features. However, the current version of this method is suitable for dealing with single-level criteria decision problems only. Therefore, in this context, this paper proposes a approach for solving multicriteria decision-making problems with hierarchically structured criteria in the FITradeoff method. This approach uses partial information of preferences provided by the decision maker, based on a structured process within the scope of the multi-attribute value theory, to find the values of the scale constants. The model is presented for both choice and ranking problematics and it is based on the traditional tradeoff procedure, which is axiomatically robust. The model effectiveness is verified after being applied to three problems adapted from the literature to both choice and ranking problematics. As a result, it was observed that in the choice problematic, in all analyzed problems, a single optimal alternative was found and always with 6 or less questions answered. In turn, in the ranking problematic in all cases either a complete order or a complete preorder was found with 17 or less questions answered.

Given the shortcomings of traditional heritage preservation practices in understanding the values that justify heritage protection, it is necessary to critically re-evaluate these practices adopted to physically protect the cultural asset, which rarely include the local values ascribed by the surrounding communities. This reflection motivated the development of this study that aims to examine the social valuation ascribed to protected railway assets on the route Jundiai-Campinas (Brazil), in order to compare the different identified values and reflect on the integrated actions of railway heritage preservation and management. To this end, a values-based approach (VBA) was used, a methodology employed for and centred on heritage preservation, which focuses on understanding the local community as one of the protagonists in the heritage valuation process. Applying the different techniques of the VBA method revealed that other values, besides the traditional ones dominant in the specialised dissemination of the subject, also have an impact on the heritage asset. By integrating these community values to the protection and management practices of the cultural asset, it is indeed possible to significantly protect and safeguard not only the monumental object but also its values.

Research on dynamic response prediction of semi-submersible wind turbine platform in real sea test model based on machine learning

The motion response of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platform is closely related to its safety, and model test is the most direct method to fully study its dynamic characteristic behavior. In this paper the dynamic response of intermediate-scale physical semi-submersible FOWT model test under real sea environmental loads is studied and compared with the numerical model dynamic response, demonstrating that some limitations of small-scale physical model tests can be overcome, such as the catenary effect of mooring lines. It is found that the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the physical model under actual marine environmental loads can be captured by the numerical model, which can improve the fidelity of model test data for semi-submersible FOWT structures in the existing literature. The dynamic response database of semi-submersible FOWT under complex wind, wave and current loads was established by using a numerical model with high accuracy, and was used in the prediction research of different machine learning algorithm models such as Genetic Algorithm optimization Back Propagation neural network (GA-BP), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Gaussian Process (GP). The research shows that the relationship between the environmental load and the dynamic response of FOWT can be established by using the machine learning model, in which the number of samples has a significant impact on the prediction of the mooring line tension, and the research on the three algorithm models shows that GP performs significantly better than GA-BP and SVM in predicting the mean value of surge, pitch and mooring line force. For the dynamic response prediction of mooring line tension, GP model can get better results. In the future, this method will become an important method to predict and monitor the dynamic response of FOWT.

Controlling particulate matter (PM) emissions to the atmosphere in industrial processes is critical for a safe and healthy environment. Because of its high strength and thermal stability, silicon carbide (SiC) is among the best materials for producing hot gas filters to be coupled to sugarcane bagasse-fired boilers in Brazil and India. In this study, we evaluated the performance of asymmetric SiC-based filters of different features for removing fine PM with particle sizes ranging from 90 to 3000 nm. The collection efficiency of the asymmetric filter made of SiC/ mullite support with no pore former, porosity of 31-33 %, and permeability of (0.17-0.30) x 10-11 m2 with a coating thickness of 109-138 mu m, effective pore size of 19-26 mu m, and effective collector diameter of 64-86 mu m was higher than 99 % for PM with size greater than 0.60 mu m. The SiC formulation with mullite and pore former also presented promising performance. The resulting pressure drop remained within the range reported for commercial hot gas filters. Over 99 % of the mass of soot and fly ash particles generated during sugarcane bagasse combustion exceeds the MPPS range found for filters, which was between 0.16 and 0.36 mu m. Therefore, the SiC asymmetric filters presenting mullite in their formulation are anticipated to meet current international emission standards.

Development of an open source library for reinforced concrete membrane element analysis

In the 1960's, concrete structures subjected to plane stresses started being idealized as a combination of two-dimensional components called membrane elements. After several research groups having collected experimental data from reinforced concrete panels, material's constitutive models were improved to better describe shear behavior. The Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) was developed by University of Toronto's research team and made good predictions for a wide range of structures. Much later, the Disturbed Stress Field Model (DSFM) was born as an upgrade to the previous model, correcting some deficiencies found in specific situations. This paper contributes in this field by developing an open source *** library, named RCMembrane, for analysis of membrane elements by MCFT and DSFM. The results were validated by comparing numerical solution to the experimental data of 72 reinforced concrete panels. For Disturbed Stress Field Model (DSFM), a new relation is proposed for minimizing concrete's compression softening effect in panels subjected to tensile stresses. In general, RCMembrane's solution algorithm obtained very near load capacity prediction for those two distinct formulations, with a slightly smaller coefficient of variation in DSFM results. Next, RCMembrane must be applied to full finite element formulations, so further conclusions can be taken from numerical simulations of usual reinforced concrete structures.

Assessing global climate change mitigation scenarios from a power system perspective using a novel multi-model framework

There is a debate regarding the suitability of global integrated assessment models (IAMs) for long-term planning exercises of the global energy system. This study informs this debate from a power system perspective and proposes a methodological framework for soft-linking of global IAMs with detailed global power system models. With the proposed open-source framework, the scenario results from IAMs can be fed into a power system model to assess given scenarios with enhanced modelling resolution. Results from these simulations can be redirected to the IAM through iterative bi-directional soft-linking. A proof of concept application is presented by linking global IAM MESSAGEix-GLOBIOM with global power system model PLEXOS-World. Among others, the results suggest that the assumption of unconstrained electricity flows inside large regional copperplates without internal network constraints causes an overestimation of the potential of variable renewables within MESSAGEixGLOBIOM. We propose areas for informed improvements in MESSAGEix-GLOBIOM and for IAMs in general.

Surveys of community garden affiliates and soils in Houston, Texas

Although urban community food gardens have the capacity to strengthen and support neighborhoods in need, the benefits of such operations must be considered in tandem with the potential risks associated with urban environmental contamination. Therefore, research is needed to characterize existing community gardens in urban areas. In the present study, a survey of Houston, TX, community gardeners (N = 20) was conducted to better understand their risk-based knowledge and perceptions, current gardening practices, and willingness to implement risk mitigation measures. Soil samples collected from the beds (N = 22) and surrounding grounds (N = 24) of existing community garden sites in Houston, TX, were screened for trace and heavy metals using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The survey indicated that community gardeners had few concerns with regard to potential soilborne hazards and were generally willing to use diverse strategies to reduce potential hazards related to garden soil contamination. Ground and garden bed soil collected from community gardens were found to have excess concentrations of arsenic compared to federal health screening limits. The information provided here provides insight into possible discordance between community gardening risk perception and contamination risk that could be addressed through outreach, engagement, and remediation approaches.

A review of utilization of industrial waste materials as cement replacement in pervious concrete: An alternative approach to sustainable pervious concrete production

Around 8% of the global carbon dioxide emissions, are generated during cement manufacturing, which also involves significant use of raw materials, leading to adverse environmental effects. Consequently, extensive research is being conducted worldwide to explore the feasibility of utilizing different industrial waste by-products as alternatives to cement in concrete production. Fly ash (FA), Metakaolin (MK), Silica fume (SF), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) are potential industrial materials that can serve as cement substitutes in pervious concrete. However, there exist conflicting findings in the literature regarding the impact of industrial supplementary cementitious materials (ISCMs) as partial cement replacements on the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of pervious concrete. The aim of this review is to investigate the feasibility and potential benefits of using ISCMs and compare them as partial cement replacements in the production of pervious concrete. The analysis primarily examines the effect of ISCMs as partial cement replacements on cementitious properties, including properties of ISMCs, mechanical properties, and durability of pervious concrete. The influence of ISCMs primarily stems from their pozzolanic reaction and filler characteristics. SF has the highest reactivity due to its high surface area and amorphous structure, resulting in a rapid pozzolanic reaction. GGBS and FA have moderate reactivity, while MK has relatively low reactivity due to its crystalline structure. Results from various studies indicate that the addition of FA, SF, and MK up to approximately 20% leads to a reduction in porosity and permeability while improving compressive strength and durability due to the filler effect of SF and MK. Incorporating GGBS increases permeability slightly while causing a slight decrease in compressive strength. The range of permeability and compressive strength for pervious concrete incorporating FA, SF, GGBS and MK were 0.

A pilot-scale wastewater reclamation system based on direct descending filtration and chlorine disinfection

The development of cost-effective technologies for treating and disinfecting wastewater to a level that makes it economically valuable, environmentally sustainable, and health-safe for reuse is of utmost importance. In this study, a direct descending filtration pilot unit was designed, assembled, and tested within a municipal wastewater treatment plant to produce nonpotable reclaimed wastewater. Bench-scale tests were performed to define the optimum coagulant type and dosage (Poly aluminium chloride, 15 mg L-1). The pilot plant performed best at a filtration rate of 15 m h-1 in a bed of commercial building silica sand with an average particle size of 0.93 mm, resulting in a net production of 0.103 m3 h-1 of treated water. The removal efficiencies for apparent color, E. coli, turbidity and total suspended solids were 86.8 +/- 2.3%, 86.8 +/- 3.6%, 76.9 +/- 6.9% and 68.7%, respectively. After a final stage of chlorine disinfection, the E. coli removal was higher than 99.7%. All the resulting parameters were within the recommended standards for nonpotable uses, such as landscape irrigation, dust and fire control, soil compaction, and street cleaning.

Voice handicap prevalence among healthcare workers in China and Indonesia

This study investigated the prevalence of voice disorders among healthcare workers in China and Indonesia. A questionnaire was administered to 721 healthcare workers, with 411 from China and 310 from Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire assessed vocal-related symptoms, perceived voice handicap, frequently heard noise sources, and the quality of communications. The results revealed that the most frequently reported symptoms were 'voice tiredness' (20.5 %) and 'clearing the throat' (18.3 %). Specifically, 19.4 % of Chinese healthcare workers experienced voice-related symptoms, whereas only 6.3 % of Indonesians reported such symptoms. Longer working hours and working years were significantly associated with voice-related symptoms. Furthermore, the healthcare workers in China and Indonesia both reported mild (<30) voice disorders based on the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-30). Approximately one-fourth (23.8 %) of healthcare workers in China had VHI-30 scores exceeding 30, compared to only 7 % in Indonesia. The differences in vocal-related symptoms and voice handicap between the two countries were significant. Healthcare workers with 50-60 working hours per week exhibited higher scores than those working 40-50 h per week in both countries. Additionally, communication quality and the severity of voice problems for healthcare workers in China were worse than in Indonesia during the pandemic.
