High-throughput design of three-dimensional carbon allotropes with Pmna space group

284 carbon allotropes with Pmna space group (No. 53) are proposed based on high -throughput calculations and density functional theory. Out of 14,285 initially identified candidates, 284 carbon allotropes are confirmed by structure optimization, removal of repetitive structures, calculation of relative enthalpies, and verification of the mechanical and thermal stabilities. Among them, 135 are metals, 55 are direct band gap semiconductors (in 15 cases with a band gap between 1.0 and 1.5 eV), 46 have three-dimensional conductive channels, 32 are superhard, and 3 are type -I Dirac semimetals.

Context Although many studies have considered urban structure when investigating urban ecological networks, few have considered the three-dimensional (3D) structure of buildings as well as urban green spaces. Airborne LiDAR datasets provide an opportunity to quantify 3D structure and evaluate 3D metrics in connectivity mapping. Objectives We examined an urban ecological network using the 3D structure of both green spaces and buildings. Methods Using breeding-season bird species observations and airborne LiDAR data collected, we assessed the influence of 3D structural variables on species diversity. We used correlation analyses to determine if vertical distribution, volume, area, and height of both buildings and vegetation were related to bird species diversity. Then we conducted circuit theory-based current flow betweenness centrality (CFBC) analysis using the LiDAR-derived structural variables. Results We found that the volumes of buildings and 8-10 m vegetation heights were both highly correlated with species richness per unit area. There were significant differences between 2D and 3D connectivity analysis using LiDAR-derived variables among urban forest patches, boulevards, and apartment complexes. Within urban forest patches and parks, 3D CFBC represented canopy structural characteristics well, by showing high variance in spatial distributions. Conclusions The 3D CFBC results indicated that adjacent high-rise buildings, dense apartment complexes, and densely urbanized areas were isolated, as characterized by low centrality values, but that vegetation planted in open spaces between buildings could improve connectivity by linking isolated areas to core areas. Our research highlights the importance of considering 3D structure in planning and managing urban ecological connectivity.

Timber building systems represent a future-oriented construction method to meet the important goals of climate, environmental and resource protection. As a naturally renewable resource, solid woods and processed wood materials offer in principle the unique opportunity to manufacture CO2-neutral structural elements. Combining skeleton construction and timber framing is basically a suitable way of using conventional techniques to produce a material-saving load-bearing structure. Nevertheless, timber for structural purposes is a material that is not available in unlimited quantities nor is evenly distributed globally. This paper discusses the potential for improving the efficiency of timber structures produced by means of a continuous digital design and production process, in accordance with the BYLD construction system. The design features of BYLD’s structural elements made of plywood panels, which are frictionally connected to each other via CNC-milled interlocks to form a homogenous cross-section, are explained in detail. The particular cross-section of basic components (wall, column, beam or floor elements) is defined automatically based on a wide range of boundary conditions such as static, structural and physical requirements or, for example, transport lengths. A performance comparison of the system is finally made based on a specific project located in Krems, Austria consisting of a heatable warehouse and an associated multi-storey office building with a floor area of about 3000 m2. Significant structural components are analyzed, regarding their technical material properties, which allows pointing out the advantages of topology-optimization, regarding increasing efficiency and preserving natural resources. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This talk reports on an approach to computer science education for pre- and early-adolescents in which the goal is the formation of occupational identity with visual computing developed collaboratively between a large game studio, a research-intensive university, and a historically black college/university (HBCU). This ongoing project takes place in a rural public-school setting in the United States. Our project is structured around the idea that identity-centered user-content creation projects can positively influence student self-professed performance and interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) related subjects and interest in STEAM careers. The projects in our curriculum engage students in real-time 3DCG coding and asset creation activities commonly associated with game development. We describe the process of working with school administrators and teachers to create a technology-infused environment in which remote external partners play a collaborative role in curriculum development and delivery. This work has significance for efforts to remotely engage with rural students at an age when occupational identity development is forming and thus develop a potential to expand the pathway for underrepresented minorities. © 2023 Owner/Author.

A numerical multi-scale method for analyzing the rate-dependent and inelastic response of short fiber reinforced polymers: Modeling framework and experimental validation

This research presents a numerical multi-scale approach that efficiently addresses the inelastic and timedependent mechanical response of short fiber reinforced polymers (SFRPs) under monotonic loading conditions by linking the mechanical analysis from microscale analysis to a continuum model. To do so, first, the mechanical performance of a recently suggested unit cell, considering the intrinsic mechanical characteristics of both fiber and matrix, is studied to address the inelastic and rate-dependent mechanical behavior of completely aligned SFRPs. Then, the evaluated mechanical response is linked to the Hill's plasticity and two-layer viscoplastic (TLVP) models to represent the anisotropic mechanical response of SFRPs. Furthermore, an easy-to-use multi-step homogenization process is considered to numerically incorporate the influence of fiber misalignments. Finally, the suggested multi-scale technique is thoroughly validated at different strain rates, by using experimental observations of short fiber composites with high volume fraction and direct FE simulations of RVEs with complex microstructures.

In this study, we investigated morphological changes including the formation of beach scarp behind the breakwaters based on field surveys and numerical simulations at Aoyama beach in Niigata coasts, Japan. The morphological changes on the land area were analyzed by using digital elevation models (DEMs) constructed by UAV photogrammetry. The changes beneath sea level were analyzed by echo sounders. As a result, the land area showed a trend of erosion with beach scarp, and the beneath the sea water a salient was formed toward the breakwaters, which was consistent with the result of numerical simulation by using XBeach. The numerical analysis implied that the formation mechanism of beach scarp was a result of avalanching on steep slope mainly because of erosion effect amplified by water level rise behind the breakwaters. It can be identified that the formation of beach scarp was caused by high wave event and initial steep slope.

Heavy metals are hazardous to environmental and human health. Metals contained in the solid fraction of emissions are fixed in the soil absorbing complex and tend to bioaccumulate in plants, which can be used both to diagnose the level of contamination of forest biogeocenoses and to study the laws of the processes of absorption of contaminants in the soil-plant system. The research aims to determine the degree of pollution in Betula pendula Roth. from emissions from Combine Magnesite (magnesite ore processing and mining plant activity area in Russia) at 1, 3, 10, and 100 km far from the emission source, which experimental plots created in the 1980s. Soil samples were collected from these sites, and 1- and 2-year-old branches and leaf specimens were collected from B. pendula individuals. The lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and iron (Fe) concentrations in soil and organs of B. pendula by the soil depth, washing, organ type, and organ age were determined. As a result, the variations in element concentrations by organs at all the distances and distances for all the organs were significant (p < 0.05). Metal concentrations were higher in the subsoil and leaf collected from 2-year-old branches. These results were interpreted as the higher values in the leaves of 2-year-old branches exposed to heavy metals in the air for a longer time, and the heavy metal concentrations in the subsoil increased due to the decomposition of these leaves. The movement of heavy metals, such as Pb and Cr, in soil was minimal.

This paper analyzes the paradoxical political and socio-spatial dynamics created by ?Safer Barrios,? a security program that redefines notions of citizenship, governance, participation, and space in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The rapid proliferation of street gates sanctioned by the state under this program is producing understudied effects both within and outside the gates throughout the city, a phenomenon that this study qualitatively analyzes. The findings reveal that these newly gated residential areas demand a more nuanced analysis than that which traditional gated communities have received in the past;this stems from their different constitution and consequences, particularly the program?s unique relationship to and sponsorship by the local government. The program paradoxically fosters a greater sense of community and safety for participants while negatively affecting mobility and sociability for the rest of city residents. The findings hold critical implications for city design, planning, and policymaking.

The use of private or consortium blockchains in organizations’ applications is growing. A relevant aspect of blockchains is the choice of consensus mechanism. This decision delimits which blockchain solutions are suitable for the private scenario. Once the consensus mechanism is chosen, more than one blockchain may be enabled. However, this decision making is not trivial and requires detailed experimental indicators about algorithms and blockchains performance. In this context, we provide a comprehensive performance analysis of the Raft consensus mechanism based on its implementation in Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum blockchain solutions. We performed our experiments on an OpenStack private cloud using each blockchain developer’s default settings for virtual machines. Our findings show how the implementation of each solution can impact the application’s performance under certain conditions.

In pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries, developing and commercializing products require great investments and intensive clinical trials. With regard to managing the risk and uncertainty of such product development, especially given the low success rates, product diversification and collaboration strategies can be instrumental for firms. Especially, the differences in product development complexity and market condition among industries require more case-specific implications due to the absence of a universally applicable strategy, even in these two similar industries. To date, little is known or discussed regarding whether product diversification and collaboration strategies work differently by industry and to what extent their impact differs across industries. Accordingly, this study examines the impact of product diversification on firm performance and compares the diversification effects between the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. Related product diversification (RPD), which involves diversifying existing product functions, and unrelated product diversification (UPD), which involves diversifying the selling market, are considered here, and their linear and curvilinear effects are examined for each industry. Furthermore, the mediating role of product diversification in the relationship between collaboration and performance is examined to explore diversification through collaboration and the effect of collaboration on firm performance. For empirical analysis, an integrated firm-level dataset combining a full set of commercialized product information, collaboration, and statistics from Medtrack and Compustat are used. The results indicate that RPD enhances pharmaceutical firms' performance, while RPD and UPD contribute to biopharmaceutical firms' performance.
