We previously demonstrated the experimental synthesis of one-dimensional van der Waals (1D vdW) heterostructures, where single-crystal boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) and/or molybdenum disulfide nanotubes seamlessly wrap around a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and form a coaxial hetero-nanotube with a diameter of only several nm. This opens up a plethora of function-designable 1D heterostructures but being able to accurately control the atomic structure and property of each shell is an initial and critical step . Here, we demonstrate the possibility of building 1D vdW heterostructures on atomically precise, i.e. electronic-property-specific, single-chirality SWCNTs. This is achieved by a long route of dispersing, sorting, re-depositing and cleaning SWCNTs before performing the synthesis of 1D heterostructures. We employ five different single-chirality SWCNT solutions as examples and confirm that 1D heterostructures can be fabricated on these solution-sorted SWCNT templates if the surfactant can be readily removed. Cutting-edge transmission electron microscopy unambiguously reveals the high-quality coaxial geometry as well as the crystal orientation of inner and outer nanotubes, and visualizes that all zigzag, near-armchair, and chiral BNNTs can form on (6, 5) SWCNTs. © 2022, The Authors. Deep learning (DL) is one of the branches of artificial intelligence that has seen exponential growth in recent years. The scientific community has focused its attention on DL due to its versatility, high performance, high generalization capacity, and multidisciplinary uses, among many other qualities. In addition, a large amount of medical data and the development of more powerful computers has also fostered an interest in this area. This paper presents an overview of current deep learning methods, starting from the most straightforward concept but accompanied by the mathematical models that are behind the functionality of this type of intelligence. In the first instance, the fundamental concept of artificial neural networks is introduced, progressively covering convolutional structures, recurrent networks, attention models, up to the current structure known as the Transformer. Secondly, all the basic concepts involved in training and other common elements in the design of the architectures are introduced. Thirdly, some of the key elements in modern networks for medical image classification and segmentation are shown. Subsequently, a review of some applications realized in the last years is shown, where the main features related to DL are highlighted. Finally, the perspectives and future expectations of deep learning are presented. © 2021 The Authors

Objective: It is reported that idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is associated with alteration of attention,executive functions,and visuospatial abilities. In addition,it is known that about half of the iRBD patients have mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this study was to explore the differences between iRBD patients with MCI and ones without MCI. Methods: 14 healthy controls (HC),24 iRBD patients without MCI (iRBD-nMCI),and 24 iRBD patients with MCI (iRBD-MCI) were recruited.

Hypoxia in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is known as the leading cause of metastasis, proliferation, and chemoresistance of HCC cells. These features have been studied using various in vivo and in vitro models to reconstruct hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). In this study, we demonstrate a three-dimensional in vitro model to reconstruct microvascularized HCC in hypoxia. This platform enables to investigate the cellular response after culturing and drug screening in hypoxic microvascularized HCC: hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) expression, proliferation, angiogenesis, and drug resistance. These findings suggest that this microfluidic device allows anti-cancer therapeutics development by investigating hypoxic HCC with microvasculature.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that is among the top 10 causes of death in the world and Brazil ranks in the top 30 high TB burden countries. In this scenario, data integration and sharing are crucial to the construction of efficient and effective evidence-based decision-making tools and to enable data-driven research. Through a socio-technical approach, this work proposes a computational infrastructure composed of a functional and semantic interoperability layer and security mechanisms to integrate national level health information systems towards a patient-centered unified database to provide a broad view of a patient across several isolated databases. The CMIID, a medical information identifier for data harmonization, developed by the University of Porto, was used for the linkage of patients across these health information systems and to perform records anonymization for privacy of personal health information. Through the integration of such systems, it is possible to gather, summarize and visualize TB data in a single system, which can be useful for health professionals and managers. Therefore, this work sought to promote the integration of disparate systems and the availability of data to support decision-making and research, which are fundamental for improving the quality of TB services in Brazil.

In this paper, we propose a new optimization-based method for high-order mesh generation. Our proposed method is based on affine combinations of nodal positions. For each interior node in the high-order straight-sided mesh, a set of weights that relates the node to its neighbors is calculated. After the high-order boundary nodes are curved to conform with the true boundary, the interior nodes are moved based on the generated weights and the new boundary positions. We present results from applying our method to several aerospace engineering geometries in 2D and 3D which demonstrate the capabilities of our method. © 2020, The Author(s).

Academic journals are ranked using a variety of methods with the most common metric being ‘journal impact factor’. Authors who publish in journals with higher impact factors are deemed to contribute more to their discipline. However, the impact factor of a journal does not indicate how long a specific article stays in the scientific discourse, and metrics that measure the length of time articles within a journal continue to be cited are not typically used. We examined citations of 443,732 research articles [786,064 total] between 1980 and 2020 across 15 journals. We explored the range of longevity values found across different journals as well as the relationship between impact factor and longevity. We found no relationship between impact factor and longevity, indicating that immediate attention to an article is not correlated with longer-term impact. In the set of journals that we examined, articles published in some journals (e.g., Ecology, Genetics) continued to be cited at a steady rate long beyond their initial publication date. This slow but steady citation accumulation resulted in the total citations in these journals approaching those of higher impact journals (e.g., Science, Nature) within the length of a typical academic career (30–40 years). © 2024 The Authors

In this study, the properties of Cs3Cu2I5 (CCI) crystals grown using the Slow Vacuum Evaporation Technique (SVET) were examined. Crystals were grown at room temperature (300 K, 27 °C) under vacuum conditions, producing single crystals with maximum diameter of 13 mm over 23 days. We confirmed excellent crystallinity via X-ray diffraction (XRD), compositional uniformity via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and homogeneity via electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA). UV-Vis measurements indicated a high transmittance of 83 % and a bandgap of 3.64 eV. The Stokes shift of 110 nm, smaller than previously reported values, contributed to faster decay times and improved low-energy detection feasibility. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) showed a rapid decay component (4.1 ns), accounting for 95.11 % of the total decay, demonstrating superior properties compared to existing reports. The gamma-ray detection capabilities of the CCI crystals were evaluated using six radioactive sources (Am-241, Ba-133, Co-57, Na-22, Cs-137, and Mn-54), achieving excellent energy resolution, including 5.2 % at 662 keV. The crystals displayed a highly linear response to gamma radiation (R² = 0.99998) with a light yield of 55,613 photons/MeV. Moreover, assessments of multiple crystals grown under identical conditions showed consistent performance with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 1.23 %. These findings confirm that SVET is a highly effective and cost-efficient method for producing high-quality CCI crystals, offering significant advantages over other growth techniques. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs and remains as one of the biggest public health problems in the world. The treatment methods currently available can cure almost all cases. Due to the difficulty of bacteriological confirmation of TB in children, the Brazilian Ministry of Health recommended the use of a scoring system for the diagnosis of pulmonary TB in childhood, covering aspects of clinical, radiological and epidemiological data. The general objective of this work is the development and availability of a mobile application based on the score described in the Manual of Recommendations for TB Control in Brazil. The application was organized to make the questionnaire flow linear, while maintaining the accordance with the structure presented in the manual. The score adapted to the Brazilian context allows health professionals to underpin their decisions with reliable information.
