Assessing Hemodynamic Changes in Cerebral Aneurysms Post Coil Embolization: A Preliminary Investigation

A cerebral aneurysm is a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel within the brain that causes the vessel to bulge outwards. The choice of treatment depends on various factors including the size and location of the aneurysm and the risk of rupture, and should be tailored to individual situations rather than following a universal approach due to their variability among individuals. This approach provides the possibility of choosing precise treatment plans that are proper for each patient's circumstances. The utilization of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) allows for the prediction of after-surgery hemodynamic changes before any surgical approach. The goal of this research was to investigate the flow characteristics and hemodynamic parameters in cerebral arteries before and after endovascular embolization treatments using CFD in three patient-specific geometries with at least one aneurysm at the middle cerebral artery's bifurcation. To model the coiling, the computational domain was divided into two fluid domains, a general fluid domain consisting of the parent arteries and a porous domain inside the aneurysm. CFD modeling was conducted to simulate blood flow in pre- and postcoiling scenarios. Results showed that the coiling model with different porosity values led to a redirection of blood flow away from the aneurysm sac. Additionally, changes in shear stress indicated potential alterations in susceptibility to vascular remodeling. In conclusion, these findings indicated that utilizing CFD modeling for simulating blood flow in patient-specific cerebral arteries could be utilized to predict hemodynamic parameters before any treatment. Mentoring is significant personal and professional assistance given by a more experienced person to a less experienced person during a time of transition. Transitions from high school to university, from university to graduate school are difficult. Organizing and running mentoring programs in schools or in professional societies provide good recruitment and retention of female students in engineering. biomedical engineering (BME) is the engineering discipline that has the highest percentage of female degree recipients and tenure/tenure-track teaching faculty. Thus there is a great potential for female role models, mentors and mentees in BME. Recently, I have a developed a mentoring program for women at the joint graduate biomedical engineering program of University of Memphis (UM) and University of Tennessee (UT). Currently we are following the book "Giving Much/Gaining More: Mentoring for Success" by Dr. Wadsworth for our meetings and activities to provide a support and discussion group, and environment to women in their transition time of the BME graduate studies. Our future goal is to expand mentoring to female students in our engineering school.

Classification of auditory ERPs for ADHD detection in children

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the children’s most common neurodevelopmental conditions. ADHD diagnosis is based on evaluating inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity symptoms that interfere with or reduce daily functioning. Although electroencephalography (EEG) tests are used for ADHD diagnosis, they are generally considered a complement to clinical evaluation. This paper proposes an approach to classify EEG records of children with ADHD and control cases. We identified and extracted relevant features from EEG signals of 47 children (22 diagnosed with ADHD and 25 controls) and evaluated machine learning techniques for classification. We used the 2-tone oddball paradigm to elicit the subjects’ auditory event-related potentials (ERP), and we recorded EEG signals with a portable headset for approximately five minutes. In the feature extraction stage, we included measures from cognitive evoked potentials, frequency bands power, chaos quantification, and bispectral analysis, in addition to the age of the children and the number of high-pitched tones the children counted during the test. The SVM and Trees algorithms obtained the best performance for 86.36% accuracy and 95.45% sensitivity. These findings demonstrate the potential of portable EEG-based systems to complement standard clinical assessments, offering an objective, time-efficient, and accessible approach to support early ADHD diagnosis. Achieving high accuracy and sensitivity in classification is critical to reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and ensuring timely intervention, ultimately improving patient outcomes. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the major global health threats, causing millions of deaths each year. According to data from the World Health Organization, over 500 million people are affected by cardiovascular diseases, resulting in over 20 million deaths in 2021 alone, accounting for about one-third of the total global deaths. Invasive blood pressure measurement methods not only cause discomfort to patients but also pose a risk of infection. Meanwhile, cuffless cuff-based methods cannot provide continuous monitoring. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a cuffless continuous blood pressure measurement system based on photoplethysmography (PPG). By using waveform measurement technology, we aim to provide a more comfortable and safer method for blood pressure monitoring, thereby enhancing the management of cardiovascular diseases. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Injectable skeletal muscle constructs overexpressing GLUT4 for type 2 diabetes intervention

Skeletal muscle tissue engineering aims to repair tissue defects caused by injury, cancer, metabolic or neuromuscular disease. The need for invasive implantation techniques often limits the implantation of large tissue constructs or repeated treatments. Recent studies have reported on the development of injectable scaffolds for tissue engineering;however, fabrication of skeletal muscle tissue is particularly challenging due to the large size of human myotubes and the required mechanical properties. This work developed a collagen-based shape-memory scaffold supportive of skeletal muscle tissue growth and differentiation in vitro and maintained shape post-injection in vivo. The injectable engineered muscle construct was intramuscularly delivered via a syringe needle and integrated successfully with the native muscle tissue. We demonstrated the system's potential on a Type 2 diabetes mouse model. A prominent early sign of type 2 diabetes is the reduction in GLUT4 expression and translocation in skeletal muscle;therefore, based on a previous work published by our group, we created injectable GLUT4-overexpressing muscle constructs. Following injection, GLUT4 overexpressing skeletal muscle tissue retained its shape-memory properties and viability and improved glucose homeostasis in the diabetic mice. This work demonstrated successful minimally invasive delivery of engineered muscle tissue and potential treatment for chronic muscle-related conditions. Statement of significance: Type 2 diabetes is a widespread metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and impaired glucose regulation. This study offers a minimally invasive approach to treatment through the development of an injectable skeletal muscle construct overexpressing GLUT4 to improve glucose homeostasis. Unlike traditional surgical methods, this minimally invasive system employs a collagen-based scaffold with shape-memory properties, enabling effective tissue delivery and integration. Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to present, analyze, and quantitatively characterize the electrical signals obtained from neuronal cultures coupled to micro-electrode arrays (MEAs). Special attention is given to the temporal evolution of electrical activity across distinct geometric regions of the MEA devices. Methods: The proposed methodology involves signal acquisition, classical analysis based on spike and burst detection, and, critically, the characterization of the probability density structure of the signals. This is achieved through the quantification of Gaussianity—expressed as the percentage of segments non-Gaussian (PSNG)—and stationarity— expressed as the percentage of segments non-stationary (PSNE). Results: Initial analyses showed that first-order power spectral density quantifiers lacked the statistical robustness required to effectively describe the complex components of MEA signals. In contrast, PSNG and PSNE demonstrated strong potential in capturing the different stages of neuronal culture development. Cluster analysis further supported the discriminative capacity of these quantifiers. Conclusion: The phase corresponding to decreased neuronal activity and onset of cell death—a biologically critical stage—exhibited the strongest correlation among the studied variables. These results suggest a discernible biological organization and highlight the relevance of PSNG and PSNE as promising tools for assessing neuronal culture dynamics. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of biomedical engineering 2025.

Variable Length Multi-Objective Whale Optimization for Trust Aware Data Gathering in Wireless Sensor Network

Efficient data collection in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is crucial. While traditional approaches rely on stationary data sinks, the use of mobile sinks, like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has shown promise in enhancing data-gathering capabilities. However, existing methods often overlook the importance of trust, leaving the network susceptible to malicious or faulty nodes. To address this issue, we propose a novel trust-aware data-gathering algorithm, Variable Length Multi-Objective Whale Optimization Data Gathering (VLMOWO-DG). Our algorithm simultaneously optimizes energy consumption, delay, and trust while employing mobile sinks to collect data from sensor nodes. By considering trust as a key performance metric, we improve data reliability and security. The VLMOWO-DG algorithm introduces flexibility through variable-length solution representation and application-oriented operators, allowing for efficient exploration of the solution space. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms established benchmarks, NSGA-II and NSGA-III, in terms of domination and hypervolume. This leads to a remarkable improvement of 200% in data gathering performance. © 2015 The Authors.

Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE) is a form of lupus that affects the skin and is highly sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV-B. in particular. can trigger inflammation and apoptosis in CLE patients. making a sunscreen with effective UVB protection crucial. This study evaluates the effectiveness of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in sunscreen. ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared using the High Energy Milling method. resulting in particle sizes of 7.77 nm and 4.44 nm. respectively. The creams containing these nanoparticles were tested for physical stability and UV protection. Results showed that the creams were physically stable and provided good UV protection. with ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles making up 12.60% of the total cream ingredients. resulting in the highest SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of 62.0 ± 1.37. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
