One of the biggest concerns voiced by families about child-centered robots in homes is privacy. My work uses co-design to better understand how youth, their family, and their clinicians formalize a youth's right to privacy with social robots. In particular, I highlight teen voices who are often overlooked in HRI. My main takeaways emphasize how the unique positioning of a robot as a non-authoritative, yet prosocial 'other' presence means stakeholders have lower perceptions of privacy when data collection and sharing is clearly defined by the robot's task. Furthermore, a social robot is situated among a teen's pre-existing relationships and responsibilities, framing privacy with robots from a relational perspective and elevating the need to clearly define the appropriate social roles for robots. In future work, I will couple these takeaways with youth's lived experiences with robots to see how privacy is contextualized further by the use of social robots in youth spaces. © 2025 IEEE.

The Inauthentic Online Self: Perceptions of Naturalness Drive Judgments of Authenticity

People sometimes behave differently depending on whether they are interacting online (by email, social media, etc.) vs. interacting in person. Four studies test the hypothesis that when an agent’s behavior is different online vs. in person, people think that the online behavior is less reflective of who the agent truly is deep down. Study 1 found that the very same behavior is regarded as less reflective of the true self when it is performed online. Study 2 showed that this effect is not merely a matter of perceived impression management. Study 3 found that there is a general tendency such that behavior is seen as more reflective of the true self when it is performed in an environment regarded as “natural.” In Study 4, a manipulation that led participants to see online behavior as more natural had a downstream effect on the degree to which this behavior was seen as reflecting the true self. Taken together, these results suggest that people’s judgments about online behavior are not simply a reflection of idiosyncratic facts about the online sphere in particular but are instead driven in part by a far more general psychological process involving perceptions of naturalness. © The Author(s) 2025.

Visual moral inference and communication

Humans can make moral inferences from multiple sources of input. In contrast, automated moral inference in artificial intelligence typically relies on language models with textual input. However, morality is conveyed through modalities beyond language. We present a computational framework that supports moral inference from natural images, demonstrated in two related tasks: 1) inferring human moral judgment toward visual images and 2) analyzing patterns in moral content communicated via images from public news. We find that models based on text alone cannot capture the fine-grained human moral judgment toward visual stimuli, but language-vision fusion models offer better precision in visual moral inference. Furthermore, applications of our framework to news data reveal implicit biases in news categories and geopolitical discussions. Our work creates avenues for automating visual moral inference and discovering patterns of visual moral communication in public media. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

This study presents an adaptive human-robot interaction (HRI) system that evaluates older adult participants' satisfaction with personalized health care programs. By integrating the CLOi robot with a large language model (LLM), the system conducts satisfaction surveys that adapt in real-time to participant responses. The system was applied to evaluate healthcare programs that include physical health measurements, exercise assessments, and virtual reality (VR) experiences. The system utilizes the CLOi robot and Claude API to analyze response clarity in real-time, automatically generating contextually appropriate follow-up questions when responses are deemed ambiguous. This adaptive questioning strategy ensures comprehensive response quality before proceeding to subsequent survey items. We conducted a preliminary feasibility study with five older adult participants to evaluate our approach. The system leverages LLM prompts to analyze gaps between question intent and participant responses, generating targeted follow-up questions as needed. Results demonstrate that our LLM-enhanced robotic interview system effectively reduced response ambiguity through dynamic follow-up questioning, achieving an 85% response resolution rate. This adaptive approach improved the clarity and specificity of healthcare satisfaction assessments for older adults. © 2025 IEEE.

Purpose of Review: Obesity is a global health crisis affecting individuals across all age groups, significantly increasing the risk of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), and cardiovascular diseases. The World Health Organization reported in 2022 that 2.5 billion adults were overweight, with 890 million classified as obese, emphasizing the urgent need for effective interventions. A critical aspect of obesity’s pathophysiology is meta-inflammation—a chronic, systemic low-grade inflammatory state driven by excess adipose tissue, which disrupts metabolic homeostasis. This review examines the role of autolysosomal dysfunction in obesity-related metabolic disorders, exploring its impact across multiple metabolic organs and evaluating potential therapeutic strategies that target autophagy and lysosomal function. Recent Findings: Emerging research highlights the importance of autophagy in maintaining cellular homeostasis and metabolic balance. Obesity-induced lysosomal dysfunction impairs the autophagic degradation process, contributing to the accumulation of damaged organelles and toxic aggregates, exacerbating insulin resistance, lipotoxicity, and chronic inflammation. Studies have identified autophagic defects in key metabolic tissues, including adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, liver, pancreas, kidney, heart, and brain, linking autophagy dysregulation to the progression of metabolic diseases. Preclinical investigations suggest that pharmacological and nutritional interventions—such as AMPK activation, caloric restriction mimetics, and lysosomal-targeting compounds—can restore autophagic function and improve metabolic outcomes in obesity models. Summary: Autolysosomal dysfunction is a pivotal contributor to obesity-associated metabolic disorders, influencing systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Alpha-Band Brain Activity Shapes Online Perceptual Learning of Concurrent Speech Differentially in Musicians vs. Nonmusicians

Plasticity from auditory experience shapes the brain's encoding and perception of sound. Though stronger neural entrainment (i.e., brain-to-acoustic synchronization) aids speech perception, underlying oscillatory activity may uniquely interact with long-term auditory experiences (i.e., music training) and short-term plasticity during concurrent speech perception. Here, we explored oscillatory activity during rapid auditory perceptual learning of concurrent speech sounds in normal-hearing young adults who differed in their amount of self-reported music training (defined as “musicians” and “nonmusicians”). Participants learned to identify double-vowel mixtures during ~45 min training sessions with concurrent high-density EEG recordings. We analyzed alpha-band power (7–12 Hz) following a rhythmic speech-stimulus train (~9 Hz) preceding behavioral identification to determine whether increased (brain-to-speech entrainment) or decreased alpha activity (alpha-band suppression) corresponded with task success. Source and directed functional connectivity analyses of EEG data probed whether behavior was driven by group differences in auditory-motor coupling. Both groups improved in behavioral identification with training. Listeners' alpha-band power prior to target speech predicted behavioral identification performance;surprisingly, stronger alpha oscillations were observed preceding incorrect compared to correct trial responses. We also found stark hemispheric biases in auditory-motor coupling, with greater auditory-motor connectivity in right compared to left hemisphere for musicians (R > L) but not in nonmusicians (R = L). Stronger alpha activity preceding incorrect behavioral responses supports the notion that alpha-band (~10 Hz) suppression is an important modulator of trial-by-trial success in perceptual processing. Grit is a personality trait, conceptualized as perseverance of effort and consistency of interests in long-term goals. Previous research has shown that grit is associated with various positive outcomes, including well-being. Despite extensive research on grit, most studies relied on self-reported measures rather than objective measures. To address this gap, our study investigated the relationship between grit and physiological responses, focusing on resting-state heart rate variability (HRV)–a physiological marker of well-being and adaptability. Additionally, we examined whether this relationship was unique to grit and not explained by other related psychological constructs (i.e., conscientiousness and self-control). A total of 206 healthy college students participated in this study (M_age = 21.03, SD = 2.48, age range = 18–33;111 women). Results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that grit significantly predicted resting-state HRV measures (i.e., RMSSD, SDNN, and HF) even after controlling for conscientiousness, self-control, age, gender, and respiration rate. These findings suggest that grit may play an important role in maintaining improved biological responses in daily life, beyond the effects of neighboring constructs. © 2025 The Author(s). The video gaming industry offers richer experiences through increasingly complex game mechanics, often hindering learnability. This research explores integrating an LLM-based chatbot, “Daisy,” in Stardew Valley, a narrative-rich role-playing game where learnability is critical. Over three weeks, 24 participants—14 new and 10 experienced players—engaged in a diary study and post-interviews. Analysis of diaries, chat logs, gameplay videos, and interviews revealed three themes: seeking information support, playing with chatbots, and addressing practical challenges. Findings show Daisy's potential to enhance learnability through natural conversations, fostering immersion and emotional engagement, though issues like hallucinations and context awareness require improvement. This work highlights preliminary insights for integrating LLMs into narrative-rich games.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with widespread increases in levels of stress and anxiety among young adults. Given that responses to stressful life events vary, it is important to understand how pre-pandemic neurocognitive factors shape reactivity to stress and susceptibility to anxiety. The present study examines associations between pre-pandemic brain activation patterns during cognitive control processing and anxiety trajectories during the pandemic. Participants were recruited as part of an ongoing longitudinal study of temperament and socioemotional development (N = 291). Forty-seven participants completed a cognitive control fMRI task and anxiety measures in late adolescence before the pandemic. In young adulthood, anxiety was assessed three times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multivariate whole-brain models tested whether activation patterns during the conflict and error processing associated with latent anxiety indices derived from a latent growth curve model. Neural response during conflict and error processing related to anxiety in distinct cortical and subcortical regions. Level of anterior cingulate cortex engagement during cognitive control related to anxiety. However, during error processing, level of engagement in the dorsolateral prefrontal, rather than anterior cingulate cortex, related to anxiety. This work provides preliminary evidence for the predictive utility of prestress neurocognitive factors for young adults’ anxiety response during a uniquely stressful event.
