Accurate prediction of spin-state energy difference is crucial for understanding the spin crossover (SCO) phenomena and is very challenging for the density functional approximations, especially for the local and semi-local approximations, due to delocalization errors. Here, we investigate the effect of self-interaction error removal from the local spin density approximation (LSDA) and PBE generalized gradient approximation on the spin-state gaps of Fe(II) complexes with various ligands using recently developed locally scaled self-interaction correction (LSIC) by Zope et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 151, 214108 (2019)]. The LSIC method is exact for one-electron density, recovers uniform electron gas limit of the underlying functional, and approaches the well known Perdew-Zunger self-interaction correction (PZSIC) as a special case when scaling factor is set to unity. Our results, when compared with reference diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) results, show that PZSIC method significantly overestimates spin-state gaps favoring low spin states for all ligands and does not improve upon DFAs. The perturbative LSIC-LSDA using PZSIC densities significantly improves the gaps with mean absolute error of 0.51 eV but slightly ovecorrects for the stronger CO ligands. The quasi self-consistent LSIC-LSDA, like CCSD(T), gives correct sign of spin-state gaps for all ligands with MAE of 0.56 eV, comparable to that of CCSD(T) (0.49 eV). Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Human adenoviruses(HAdVs)are highly contagious pathogens with various genotypes implicated in acute respiratory disease(ARD)and linked to fatality,especially in immunosuppressed patients,young children,and military ***,no vaccines or specific drugs are approved for clinical *** hosts of adenoviruses are strictly species-specific,which strongly limits the development of vaccines and drugs against *** this study,immunocompetent BALB/c mice were challenged with different doses of human adenovirus type 5(HAdV-5)via tail intravenous injection(i.v.).All mice challenged with a high dose of HAdV-5(3.21010 TCID50/kg)died within 3–5 days,while those receiving a low dose of HAdV-5(8109 or 4109 TCID50/kg)***,among the mice receiving a medium dose of HAdV-5(1.61010 TCID50/kg),60%(n¼3/5)of male mice died,while all female mice *** suggests that male mice may be more susceptible to HAdV-5 infection than female mice,consistent with clinical findings in ***-5 DNA was mainly distributed in the liver,followed by the spleen and *** changes were observed in the lung,liver,and spleen,with severity increasing in correlation with the virus challenge *** and qPCR analyses of the liver indicated that the down-regulated expression of the H2-Aa,H2-Ea-ps,CD74,and H2-Eb1 genes in male mice,as well as the AHR gene in female mice,may contribute to the observed higher mortality rates in male ***,this effective,feasible,and costefficient mouse model could serve as a candidate for evaluating HAdV vaccines and anti-adenovirus therapeutics.

Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) is crucial in meteorology and agriculture for understanding plant-environment interactions. Its application as an indicator in agricultural practices notably advances Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and Climate Action (SDG 13). This research focuses on the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security in the Nile River Basin (NRB), emphasizing the role of VPD, temperature, and precipitation. Utilizing Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets from NEX-GDDP-CMIP6, the study analyzes key climatic variables that influence agricultural conditions. The study applies the Mann-Kendall test to evaluate VPD trends from 2000 to 2060 under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. The study's findings on the implications of rising VPD levels in the Nile River Basin (NRB), particularly under the SSP 5-8.5 scenario, highlight a critical challenge for the region's agricultural productivity and food security. The increased VPD, indicative of drier conditions, leads to a moisture deficit for crops, potentially reducing agricultural yields. This scenario poses a significant threat to food security, as lower crop yields can result in food shortages and higher food prices, adversely affecting vulnerable populations. The study underscores the necessity of integrating VPD insights into agricultural and water resource management strategies to uphold food security against climatic variations in support of the SDGs.

The rise of antibiotic resistance (AR) poses substantial threats to human and animal health, food security, and economic stability. Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) has emerged as a powerful strategy for population-level AR monitoring, providing valuable data to guide public health and policy decisions. Metagenomic sequencing is especially promising, as it can yield comprehensive profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and other genes relevant to AR in a single run. However, online analytical platforms to facilitate continuous AR monitoring through longitudinal metagenomic data are lacking. To address this, we introduce Cyberinfrastructure for Waterborne Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance (CIWARS), a web server configured for characterizing key AR trends from longitudinal metagenomic WBS data. CIWARS offers comprehensive ARG and taxonomic profiling, along with detection of anomalous AR indicators over time, aiding in identifying potential events of concern, such as the emergence of resistant strains or outbreaks. Through interactive temporal data visualization, CIWARS enables AR monitoring and demonstrates its potential for informing effective and timely interventions to mitigate the spread and transmission of AR. CIWARS is broadly applicable to longitudinal metagenomic data from any environment and thus could be a valuable tool to support global efforts to combat the evolution and spread of AR, while also guiding agricultural and public health efforts aimed at optimizing antibiotic use when it is needed. Pressure-induced magnetic properties of quasi-2D Cr2Si2Te6 and Mn3Si2Te6

Recently, the pressure has been used as external stimuli to induce structural and magnetic phase transitions in many layered quantum materials whose layers are linked by van der Waals forces. Such materials with weakly held layers allow relatively easy manipulation of the superexchange mechanism and lead to novel magnetic behavior. Using the hydrostatic pressure as a disorderless means to manipulate the interlayer coupling, we applied pressure on two quasi-2D sister compounds, namely, Cr2Si2Te6 (CST) and Mn3Si2Te6 (MST), up to ~1 GPa. Magnetic property measurements with the application of pressure revealed that the ferromagnetic transition temperature decreases in CST while the opposite trend occurs for the ferrimagnet MST. In MST, the magnetization decreases with the increase in the pressure, and such trend is not clearly noticed in CST, within the pressure range studied. Theoretical calculations showed the overall pressure effect on layer separation, bond angle, and exchange coupling, strongly influencing the change in subsequent magnetic characteristics. Exchange coupling in Mn3Si2Te6 is strongly frustrated and the first nearest neighbor interaction is the most dominant of the components with the strongest pressure dependence. Whereas, in Cr2Si2Te6, the exchange coupling parameters exhibit very little dependence on the pressure. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication related to diabetes that affects approximately 33% of individuals with this condition and, if not detected and treated early, can lead to irreversible vision loss. Fundus lesions such as Hard and Soft Exudates, Hemorrhages, and Microaneurysms typically identify DR. The development of computational methods to segment these lesions plays a fundamental role in the early diagnosis of the disease. This paper proposes a new approach that uses an R2U-Net combined with data augmentation techniques for segmenting fundus lesions. We trained, adjusted, and evaluated the proposed work in the DDR dataset, achieving an accuracy of 99.87% and a mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) equal 59.69%. Furthermore, we assessed it in the IDRiD dataset, achieving an mIoU of 49.92%. The results obtained in the experiments highlight the potential contribution of the model in the lesion annotations for creating new DR datasets, which is essential given the scarcity of annotations in publicly available datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

Accuracy of a one-dimensional reduction of dynamical systems on networks

Resilience is an ability of a system with which the system can adjust its activity to maintain its functionality when it is perturbed. To study resilience of dynamics on networks, Gao et al. [Nature (London) 530, 307 (2016)] proposed a theoretical framework to reduce dynamical systems on networks, which are high dimensional in general, to one-dimensional dynamical systems. The accuracy of this one-dimensional reduction relies on three approximations in addition to the assumption that the network has a negligible degree correlation. In the present study, we analyze the accuracy of the one-dimensional reduction assuming networks without degree correlation. We do so mainly through examining the validity of the individual assumptions underlying the method. Across five dynamical system models, we find that the accuracy of the one-dimensional reduction hinges on the spread of the equilibrium value of the state variable across the nodes in most cases. Specifically, the one-dimensional reduction tends to be accurate when the dispersion of the node's state is small. We also find that the correlation between the node's state and the node's degree, which is common for various dynamical systems on networks, is unrelated to the accuracy of the one-dimensional reduction.

Novel Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging modalities can quantify hemodynamics but require long acquisition times, precluding its widespread use for early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. To reduce the acquisition times, reconstruction methods from undersampled measurements are routinely used, that leverage representations designed to increase image compressibility. Reconstructed anatomical and hemodynamic images may present visual artifacts. Although some of these artifact are essentially reconstruction errors, and thus a consequence of undersampling, others may be due to measurement noise or the random choice of the sampled frequencies. Said otherwise, a reconstructed image becomes a random variable, and both its bias and its covariance can lead to visual artifacts;the latter leads to spatial correlations that may be misconstrued for visual information. Although the nature of the former has been studied in the literature, the latter has not received as much attention. In this study, we investigate the theoretical properties of the random perturbations arising from the reconstruction process, and perform a number of numerical experiments on simulated and MR aortic flow. Our results show that the correlation length remains limited to two to three pixels when a Gaussian undersampling pattern is combined with recovery algorithms based on 1-norm minimization. However, the correlation length may increase significantly for other undersampling patterns, higher undersampling factors (i.e., 8× or 16× compression), and different reconstruction methods. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.
