The use of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in combination with supplementary cementitious materials like metakaolin presents an opportunity to enhance concrete performance while addressing environmental concerns in construction, lowering CO2 emissions by clincker substitution. This study investigates the behavior of high-strength microconcrete incorporating SAPs and metakaolin, evaluating their feasibility and sustainability for construction applications. Three microconcrete and paste mixes were analyzed: a reference mix and two mixes containing 0.15% and 0.30% SAP by cement mass. All mixes included a 10% metakaolin substitution by cement mass and maintained the same water/cement ratio, without additional curing water for SAPs. Fresh-state tests assessed consistency and specific mass, while hardened-state tests measured elastic modulus. Autogenous shrinkage was evaluated through linear volumetric variation using dial gauges. Microstructural analysis of the pastes and microconcretes involved thermogravimetry, isothermal conduction calorimetry, and X-ray microtomography. The results highlight the beneficial effects of SAPs with metakaolin, including enhanced hardened state properties and refined pore structure, achieved despite the absence of extra curing water. SAPs contributed to increased pozzolanic activity in metakaolin, likely due to delayed water release from SAP desorption. Furthermore, SAPs effectively mitigated autogenous shrinkage, making their application in concrete mixes promising. These findings emphasize the dual benefit of improving concrete performance and advancing environmental sustainability, showcasing the potential of SAPs and metakaolin in producing high-performance, eco-friendly concrete solutions for the construction industry. © 2025, The Authors. Contract-Inspired Contest Theory for Controllable Image Generation in Mobile Edge Metaverse

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

Polarization-Tunable Colorimetric Metasurfaces for All-Optical and Non-Destructive Structural Characterization of Polymeric Nanofibers

Metasurfaces have pioneered significant improvements in sensing technology by tailoring strong optical responses to weak signals. When designed with anisotropic subwavelength geometries, metasurfaces can tune responses to varying polarization states of light. Leveraging this to quantify structural alignment in fibrous materials unveils an alternative to destructive characterization methods. This work introduces metasurface-enhanced polarized light microscopy (Meta-PoL), which employs polarization-tunable, guided-mode-resonant colorimetric metasurfaces to characterize molecular and bulk alignment of poly(Ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers in a far-field configuration. PCL nanofibers drawn at 0%, 400%, and 900% ratios were interfaced with the studied metasurfaces. Metasurface resonances coinciding with the intrinsic drawn nanofiber resonances – confirmed by Stokes Polarimetry – produced the strongest colorimetric enhancement, resultant from alignment-specific nanofiber reflectivity. The enhancement degree corresponded with molecular and bulk alignments for each draw ratio, as measured through differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Thus, Meta-PoL presents an all-optical, non-destructive, and quantitative measurement of nanofiber alignment. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Optimal Routing in a Small-World Network

Substantial research has been devoted to the modelling of the small-world phenomenon that arises in nature as well as human society. Earlier work has focused on the static properties of various small-world models. To examine the routing aspects, Kleinberg proposes a model based on a d-dimensional toroidal lattice with long-range links chosen at random according to the d-harmonic distribution. Kleinberg shows that, by using only local information, the greedy routing algorithm performs in O（lg^2 n） expected number of hops. We extend Kleinberg＇s small-world model by allowing each node x to have two more random links to nodes chosen uniformly and randomly within （lg n）2/d Manhattan distance from x. Based on this extended model, we then propose an oblivious algorithm that can route messages between any two nodes in O（lg n） expected number of hops. Our routing algorithm keeps only O（（lgn）β＋1） bits of information on each node, where 1 〈 β 〈 2, thus being scalable w.r.t, the network size. To our knowledge, our result is the first to achieve the optimal routing complexity while still keeping a poly-logarithmic number of bits of information stored on each node in the small-world networks.

As IoT technology grows, several different payment methods are available now. NFC (Near Field Communication) as a short-range communication technology has been applied in many fields, such as contactless payment and electronic tickets. ATM (Auto Teller Machine) also benefits from NFC technology as one way of cardless cash withdrawal. However, there are many security problems, and convenience problems exist. In security, certain kinds of attacks, such as man-in-the-middle, replay, and brute-force attacks, must be considered. These attacks may influence user privacy. Furthermore, considering user experience, existing methods may not make users feel enough convenience when using. To enhance security and user experience, we proposed a secure NFC cardless cash withdrawal system using time stamps and nonce to reduce the risk of attack and design more effortless operations for users to enhance user experience. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to create a device with technological development of the self-inflating bag (SIB) equipment to measure the variables tidal volume, peak inspiratory pressure, and inspiratory flow and to evaluate the knowledge of undergraduate students in handling the SIB. To reduce the risks of mortality, length of hospital stay, and infections, SIB is a resource used to ventilate the patient through the inflation of the device, but it is not capable of measuring the ventilatory parameters. Excess ventilation and incorrect handling of the bag can cause lung injury in newborns. Therefore, measuring these parameters can prevent lung injury resulting from inadequate ventilation. Method: This is a cross-sectional and experimental study, with the development of a device SIB that allows the evaluation of variables of neonatal respiratory mechanics that were tested with an artificial lung. It was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and the research was developed in three stages: the first represents the search for scientific articles for the consensus of neonatal ventilatory variables for the construction of the SIB parameters;the second stage depicts the technological development of a device capable of monitoring such variables through the SIB. In the third stage, the content validation of the device with the handling of the SIB was carried out by students of medicine and physiotherapy courses of Brazil. Results: In this work, a device that analyzes the values of the main ventilatory parameters in neonatology was developed and to generate a safety range for the use of the device, curves with a tolerance of 10% up and down were created. All electronic components were coupled to the equipment, with a display that transmits the parameter values. Dynamics of COVID-19 Misinformation: An Analysis of Conspiracy Theories, Fake Remedies, and False Reports

This paper makes four scientific contributions to the area of misinformation detection and analysis on digital platforms, with a specific focus on investigating how conspiracy theories, fake remedies, and false reports emerge, propagate, and shape public perceptions in the context of COVID-19. A dataset of 5,614 posts on the internet that contained misinformation about COVID-19 was used for this study. These posts were published in 2020 on 427 online sources (such as social media platforms, news channels, and online blogs) from 193 countries and in 49 languages. First, this paper presents a structured, three-tier analytical framework that investigates how multiple motives - including fear, politics, and profit - can lead to a misleading claim. Second, it emphasizes the importance of narrative structures, systematically identifying and quantifying the thematic elements that drive conspiracy theories, fake remedies, and false reports. Third, it presents a comprehensive analysis of different sources of misinformation, highlighting the varied roles played by individuals, state-based organizations, media outlets, and other sources. Finally, it discusses multiple potential implications of these findings for public policy and health communication, illustrating how insights gained from motive, narrative, and source analyses can guide more targeted interventions in the context of misinformation detection on digital platforms. © 2025, CC BY.

Longitudinal, Multimodal Tracking Reveals Lasting Neurovascular Impact of Individual Microinfarcts

Microinfarcts, the "invisible lesions", are prevalent in aged and injured brains and associated with cognitive impairments, yet their neurophysiological impact remains largely unknown. Using a multimodal chronic neural platform that combines functional microvasculature imaging with spatially resolved neural recording, the neurovascular effect of a single microinfarct is investigated. Unlike larger strokes, microinfarcts induced only temporary suppression of neural activity with minimal cell death, with recovery paralleling vasculature remodeling at the infarct core. Neural activity is more severely suppressed at the shallower cortical layer despite milder vascular damage compared to deeper layers, and the excitability of fast-spiking interneurons attenuation is accompanied by heightened bursting of regular spiking neurons. Spike phase locking at the low-gamma band is disrupted, indicating a lasting impairment of long-range assembly communication. These results highlight the subtle yet significant neurovascular disruptions of a single microinfarct. © 2025 The Author(s). Advanced Science published by Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Large-scale gradient-based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) can aid in the exploration of high-dimensional design spaces for novel air vehicle concepts, thereby leading to more efficient and economic designs. This paper builds on past works where we demonstrated large-scale physics-based MDO capabilities and applied these to NASA’s lift-plus-cruise electric air taxi concept. We extend this comprehensive mid-fidelity system-level optimization problem with high(er)-fidelity subsystem-level optimizations of various aircraft systems and mission phases, with the aim of further enhancing the accuracy and scope of the aforementioned system-level optimization problem: 1) Power minimization during the transition mission phase;2) Electrical powertrain topology optimization;3) Cell chemistry modeling and thermomechanical battery pack topology optimization;4) Shell-based coupled aero-elastic wing structure optimization. An Analytical Target Cascading-like distributed MDO architecture allows us to couple the system- and subsystem-level optimizations in order to arrive at a consistent and feasible design. We find that the system-level design is most heavily impacted by the reduced battery pack-level energy densities that stem from power peaks in the mission profile. These power peaks seem to result from the inefficient lift rotor blade designs that are needed to satisfy noise constraints. We draw conclusions based on trends in our results and give recommendations for future MDO studies of electrical air taxi vehicle concepts. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Local and global sensitivity analyses on the overflow probability of Abadia de Goiás radioactive near surface repository

This work presents a sensitivity analysis of the overflow probability of the near- surface radioactive repository built after the Abadia de Goiás accident, where radioactive 137Cs was released. The purpose of the analysis is to help the repository owner and the regulatory body make decisions on design parameters that affect the overflow probability. The following parameters have been considered: degradation function of the repository ceiling, internal porosity of the repository, internal area of the repository base, repository base and wall thicknesses, repository height, height of the liquid column inside the repository, average rainfall rate, evapotranspiration rate, surface runoff and hydraulic conductivity of the repository concrete. The choice for the range of each parameter is discussed. An investigation of the role of the mentioned parameters is detailed based on results obtained in a previous paper, and the dependencies among the rate parameters on the average rainfall rate is emphasized and modeled. To give a deeper perspective, local and global sensitivity analyses have been performed. In the case of global analysis, two approaches have been followed: in the first, the concept of Normalized Mutual Information and the other one leverages Shapley values derived from Light Gradient Boosting Machine and Shapley values have been used for investigating non-linearities. For some parameters the lowest values are to be considered, e.g., the repository base thickness and the average rainfall rate, while for others the highest value is desirable, like the evapotranspiration rate and the surface runoff in order to obtain lower overflow probabilities. These results should be looked with care because nonlinearities have been identified by the Shapley value analysis. Overall, the degradation function and the evapotranspiration rate emerge as the most influential parameters.
