The most beautiful recognizable feature of the toco toucan is its large and colorful bill. Despite its importance, such as in feeding and acting as a thermal regulator, few systematic approaches have been proposed for characterizing its structural organization. A framework for identifying and characterizing the trabecular bone tissue located inside the bill is reported in this work. An image processing pipeline for segmenting the trabecular bones is proposed, followed by the derivation of a 3D coordinate system defined by the shape of the bill. These coordinates are then used for further characterization of the mass distribution inside the bill. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, we explore theoretically and experimentally broadband spatiotemporally modulated (STM) magnet-less circulators realized by combining three-port non-reciprocal junctions with three identical bandpass filters. We develop a rigorous theory for the proposed circuit, which allows to optimize its design and to derive a global bound on the maximum possible bandwidth (BW). We verify our theory with simulations and measurements of a printed circuit board (PCB) prototype based on a differential wye junction and second-order Chebyshev bandpass filters, resulting in a measured fractional BW of 13.9% at a center frequency of 1 GHz. In this research, the transient characteristics of a new type fuel metering system for aircraft turbofan engines using two types of pumps, a gear pump and a centrifugal pump, were studied by modelling and simulation. This new fuel metering system is capable of hydraulically unloading the operating state of each pump by the pump mode switching mechanism within the permissible range of the pump rotation speed and the fuel flow rate and it is possible to reduce the fuel temperature rise due to the pressure loss in the circuit in the operation region of the entire fuel system. In addition to this, by using a small centrifugal pump that can realize high discharge flow rate, it is possible to reduce weight compared to the conventional fuel system. However, when the pump mode is switched, unexpected fluctuation in the fuel flow rate can occur when a large change in the inlet pressure of the system occurs, the pressure control unit cannot follow the change, and the transient phenomenon cannot be suppressed. At this time, the pressure waveform generated at the time of changing the pump mode includes a high frequency component such that the pressure control unit, which plays a role of keeping the metering valve differential pressure constant, cannot follow up. Therefore, in this paper, we focused on the frequency of the pressure change waveform when the pump mode was changed and studied the model of the fuel system inlet pressure in the gear pump mode. Based on that model, we propose a method to reduce the frequency characteristics of the pressure change occurring at the time of pump mode change.

Given the difficulty of invasive methods to assess muscle action during natural human movement, surface electromyography (sEMG) has been increasingly used to capture muscle activity in relation to kinesiological analysis of specific tasks. Isolated isometric, concentric and eccentric forms of muscle action have been receiving the most attention for research purposes. Nevertheless natural muscle action frequently involves the use of a preceding eccentric muscle action as a form of potentiation of immediate muscle concentric action, in what is designated as muscle stretch-shortening cycle (SSC). The most frequently applied protocols for the evaluation of SSC on vertical jumps are by virtue of their reproducibility and control of experimental conditions, squat jump (SJ) without countermovement (CM), countermovement jump (CMJ) with long CM and drop jump (DJ) with short CM. The methods used to extract information and relationship of the captured signals also present a high diversity, with the question about the consistency of the methods and obtained results. The objective of this study is to evaluate the consistency of the analysis and results by applying different EMGs signal analysis techniques related to strategic muscle groups of the lower limbs at different countermovement evaluated in vertical jumps. Raw sEMG signals of 5 lower limb muscles of 6 subjects during SJ, CMJ and DJ were rectified, filtered and obtained their envelope, and then correlated (CR) for detection of synergistic, agonist and antagonist activity, applied principal component analysis (PCA) for the detection of uncorrelated components explaining maximum variability and normalized cross-correlation (CCRN) for detection of maximum correlations and time lag. CR of EMG envelopes presented higher coactivities (CoA) in DJ relative to SJ and these CoA superior to CMJ with greater synergy in DJ relative to SJ and CMJ that present several loop cycles corresponding to time lag of activity. The dataset with imbalanced class can reduce the performance of the classifiers. In this study proposed a cross-project software defect prediction model that applies the SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) to balance classes in datasets and ensembles technique to reduce misclassification. The ensemble technique using AdaBoost and Bagging algorithms. The results of the study show that the model that integrates SMOTE and Bagging provides better performance. The proposed model can find more software defects and more precise.

Deficient myelination of the brain is associated with neurodevelopmental delays, particularly in high-risk infants, such as those born small in relation to their gestational age (SGA). New methods are needed to further study this condition. Here, we employ Color Spatial Light Interference Microscopy (cSLIM), which uses a brightfield objective and RGB camera to generate pathlength-maps with nanoscale sensitivity in conjunction with a regular brightfield image. Using tissue sections stained with Luxol Fast Blue, the myelin structures were segmented from a brightfield image. Using a binary mask, those portions were quantitatively analyzed in the corresponding phase maps. We first used the CLARITY method to remove tissue lipids and validate the sensitivity of cSLIM to lipid content. We then applied cSLIM to brain histology slices. These specimens are from a previous MRI study, which demonstrated that appropriate for gestational age (AGA) piglets have increased internal capsule myelination (ICM) compared to small for gestational age (SGA) piglets and that a hydrolyzed fat diet improved ICM in both. Valley-selective optical Stark effect probed by Kerr rotation

The ability to monitor and control distinct states is at the heart of emerging quantum technologies. The valley pseudospin in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers is a promising degree of freedom for such control, with the optical Stark effect allowing for valley-selective manipulation of energy levels in WS2 and WSe2 using ultrafast optical pulses. Despite these advances, understanding of valley-sensitive optical Stark shifts in TMDCs has been limited by reflectance-based detection methods where the signal is small and prone to background effects. More sensitive polarization-based spectroscopy is required to better probe ultrafast Stark shifts for all-optical manipulation of valley energy levels. Here, we show time-resolved Kerr rotation to be a more sensitive probe of the valley-selective optical Stark effect in monolayer TMDCs. Compared to the established time-resolved reflectance methods, Kerr rotation is less sensitive to background effects. Kerr rotation provides a fivefold improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of the Stark effect optical signal and a more precise estimate of the energy shift. This increased sensitivity allows for observation of an optical Stark shift in monolayer MoS2 that exhibits both valley and energy selectivity, demonstrating the promise of this method for investigating this effect in other layered materials and heterostructures.

There has been much research which proposed for cross-project software defect prediction models but no models that perform very well with various datasets in general. Software defect dataset usually imbalanced because it contains far more the not defected modules than the defected modules. Class imbalances in the dataset can reduce the performance of classifiers in the software defect prediction model. In this study proposed a Random Undersampling algorithm to balance classes and ensemble techniques to reduce misclassification. The ensemble technique used is the AdaBoost and Bagging algorithm. The results showed that the software defect prediction model that integrates the Random Undersampling algorithm and AdaBoost provides better performance and can find more defects than other models.

Neural stimulation is a powerful technique for modulating physiological functions and for writing information into the nervous system as part of brain-machine interfaces. Current clinically approved neural stimulators require batteries and are many cubic centimeters in size- typically much larger than their intended targets. We present a complete wireless neural stimulation system consisting of a 1.7 mm3 wireless, batteryless, leadless implantable stimulator (the "mote"), an ultrasonic wireless link for power and bi-directional communication, and a hand-held external transceiver. The mote consists of a piezoceramic transducer, an energy storage capacitor, and a stimulator integrated circuit (IC). The IC harvests ultrasonic power with high efficiency, decodes stimulation parameter downlink data, and generates current-controlled stimulation pulses. Stimulation parameters are time-encoded on the fly through the wireless link rather than being programmed and stored on the mote, enabling complex stimulation protocols with high-temporal resolution and closed-loop capability while reducing power consumption and on-chip memory requirements. Uplink data indicates whether the mote is currently stimulating;it is encoded by the mote via backscatter modulation and is demodulated at the external transceiver. We show that the system operates at an acoustic power one fifth the FDA limit for diagnostic ultrasound and is robust to expected real-world acoustic link misalignment. We investigate the performance of the system with motes acutely implanted with a cuff on the sciatic nerve of anesthetized rats and show highly repeatable stimulation across a wide range of physiological responses.
