Using an ensemble of redistricting plans, we evaluate whether a given political districting faithfully represents the geo-political landscape. Redistricting plans are sampled by a Monte Carlo algorithm from a probability distribution that adheres to realistic and non-partisan criteria. Using the sampled redistricting plans and historical voting data, we produce an ensemble of elections that reveal geo-political structure within the state. We showcase our methods on the two most recent districtings of NC for the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as a plan drawn by a bipartisan redistricting panel. We find the two state enacted plans are highly atypical outliers whereas the bipartisan plan accurately represents the ensemble both in partisan outcome and in the fine scale structure of district-level results. Nonreciprocal cavities and the time-bandwidth limit

The time-bandwidth limit inherently relates the lifetime of a resonance and its spectral bandwidth, with direct implications on the maximum storage time of a pulse versus its frequency content. It has been recently argued that nonreciprocal cavities may overcome this constraint, by breaking the strict equality of their incoupling and outcoupling coefficients. Here, we generally study the implications of nonreciprocity on resonant cavities and derive general relations, stemming from microscopic reversibility, that govern their dynamics. We show that nonreciprocal cavities do not provide specific advantages in terms of the time-bandwidth limit, but they may have other attractive properties for nanophotonic systems. Consumer purchasing patterns are a form of purchases made by consumers, whether someone or a lot of people to get the desired item by making a purchase transaction. One characteristic of the purchase pattern is the existence of acquiring something through exchanging money. This study aims to create an application that is used in determining consumer purchasing patterns by applying a priori algorithms and using Visual Basic 2010 as a tool for determining consumer purchase patterns. This application uses a priori algorithm calculation method where the sample consumer purchase data will be sorted and calculated by providing the value of the minium support and configuration parameters and based on the results of confidence the largest number of conclusions such as: can be used as information for determining sales, the application of a priori algorithms can provide information pattern combination item set from consumer purchase data that is with support above 15% and confidence above 50% on item set.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is influenced by a variety of modifiable risk factors, including a person's dietary habits. While the ketogenic diet (KD) holds promise in reducing metabolic risks and potentially affecting AD progression, only a few studies have explored KD's metabolic impact, especially on blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Our study involved participants at risk for AD, either cognitively normal or with mild cognitive impairment. The participants consumed both a modified Mediterranean Ketogenic Diet (MMKD) and the American Heart Association diet (AHAD) for 6 weeks each, separated by a 6-week washout period. We employed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics to profile serum and CSF and metagenomics profiling on fecal samples. While the AHAD induced no notable metabolic changes, MMKD led to significant alterations in both serum and CSF. These changes included improved modifiable risk factors, like increased HDL-C and reduced BMI, reversed serum metabolic disturbances linked to AD such as a microbiome-mediated increase in valine levels, and a reduction in systemic inflammation. Additionally, the MMKD was linked to increased amino acid levels in the CSF, a breakdown of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), and decreased valine levels. Importantly, we observed a strong correlation between metabolic changes in the CSF and serum, suggesting a systemic regulation of metabolism. Our findings highlight that MMKD can improve AD-related risk factors, reverse some metabolic disturbances associated with AD, and align metabolic changes across the blood-CSF barrier.

Experimental investigation of two-phase flows is important in many areas of research and industrial application. We introduce a probe based on electrical impedance and Fiber Bragg Grating-based strain measurements, which is able to monitor two-phase flow in pipes. The prototype probe presented consists of an optical fiber with a FBG for sensing encapsulated by a hollow stainless-steel cylinder, which is interrogated for strain and conductance measurements. Raw data is converted to flow parameters such as gas bubble length and velocity. Initial results in a two-phase flow test bench show that the combined optical-electrical technique is feasible and promising to be applied in two-phase flow monitoring.

Edge computing has emerged as a solution that can accommodate complex application requirements by shifting data and computation to infrastructure elements that are more suitable to manage them given the current circumstances. The BASMATI Knowledge Extractor is a component that facilitates the modeling of the resource utilization by providing tools to analyze application usage together with user behavior. This paper presents a new algorithm for discontinuity location and characterization using A-scan signals from an ultrasonic inspection system. The algorithm is based on solving an inverse problem in which the observation model is different from that traditionally used. In this model, the input vector represents the location of the geometrical center of the discontinuity and the scattering amplitude of the discontinuity is embedded in the impulse response of the ultrasonic inspection system. First, we jointly estimate the locations and the scattering amplitudes of the discontinuities from the acquired signals. Then, the geometrical parameters of the discontinuities are calculated from the estimated scattering amplitude. The method is tested to characterize side-drilled holes using both synthetic and real data. The results demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Moiré superlattices formed in van der Waals bilayers have enabled the creation and manipulation of new quantum states, as is exemplified by the discovery of superconducting and correlated insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle. Twisted bilayer semiconductors may lead to tunable exciton lattices and topological states, yet signatures of moiré excitons have been reported only in closely angularly-aligned bilayers. Here we report tuning of moiré lattice in WS2 /MoSe2 bilayers over a wide range of twist angles, leading to the continuous tuning of moiré - lattice induced interlayer excitons and their hybridization with optically bright intralayer excitons. A pronounced revival of the hybrid excitons takes place near commensurate twist angles, 21.8◦ and 38.2◦, due to interlayer tunneling between states connected by a moiré reciprocal lattice vector. From the angle dependence, we obtain the effective mass of the interlayer excitons and the electron inter-layer tunneling strength. These findings pave the way for understanding and engineering rich moiré -lattice induced phenomena in angle-twisted semiconductor van dar Waals heterostructures. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a pervasive developmental disorder that will affect children in terms of interpersonal communication, social interaction, and imaginative levels in play. Many therapies to help the motor neuron performance is one of them Pretend Play. Pretend Play is a therapy that invites children in playing to demonstrate something else and tell how to use objects that are considered in the child's imagination. However, in the era of highly developed technology, many fields have used the Augmented Reality method as a visualization of various aspects. With this method researchers will present the therapeutic visualization of the block to 3D transportation tool that is useful for strengthening motor nerves and visual strength of the child. The system can run well during marker detection, marker movement, and 3D object display with the accuracy of precision angle and distance between virtual world with real world reach 100% with angle 0 at distance 31 cm and the maximum distance from the marker is 46 cm and the maximum angle is 30˚.

Traditional data sources are not sufficient for measuring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. New and non-traditional sources of data are required. Citizen science is an emerging example of a non-traditional data source that is already making a contribution. In this Perspective, we present a roadmap that outlines how citizen science can be integrated into the formal Sustainable Development Goals reporting mechanisms. Success will require leadership from the United Nations, innovation from National Statistical Offices and focus from the citizen-science community to identify the indicators for which citizen science can make a real contribution.
