Polaritonic frequency-comb generation and breather propagation in a negative-index metamaterial with a cold four-level atomic medium

We develop a concept for a waveguide that exploits spatial control of nonlinear surface-polaritonic waves. Our scheme includes an optical cavity with four-level N-type atoms in a lossless dielectric placed above a negative-index metamaterial layer. We propose exciting a polaritonic Akhmediev breather at a certain position of the interface between the atomic medium and the metamaterial by modifying laser-field intensities and detunings. Furthermore, we propose generating position-dependent polaritonic frequency combs by engineering widths of the electromagnetically induced transparency window commensurate with the surface-polaritonic modulation instability. Therefore, this waveguide acts as a high-speed polaritonic modulator and position-dependent frequency-comb generator, which can be applied to compact photonic chips.

The transition-metal pentatellurides HfTe5 and ZrTe5 have been studied for their exotic transport properties with much debate over the transport mechanism, band gap, and cause of the resistivity behavior, including a large low-temperature resistivity peak. Single crystals grown by the chemical-vapor-transport method have shown an n−p transition of the Seebeck coefficient at the same temperature as a peak in the resistivity. We show that behavior similar to that of single crystals can be observed in iodine-doped polycrystalline samples but that undoped polycrystalline samples exhibit drastically different properties: they are p type over the entire temperature range. Additionally, the thermal conductivity for polycrystalline samples is much lower, 1.5 Wm−1 K−1, than previously reported for single crystals. It is found that the polycrystalline ZrTe5 system can be modeled as a simple semiconductor with conduction and valence bands both contributing to transport, separated by a band gap of 20 meV. This model demonstrates to first order that a simple two-band model can explain the transition from n- to p-type behavior and the cause of the anomalous resistivity peak. Combined with the experimental data, the two-band model shows that carrier concentration variation is responsible for differences in behavior between samples. Using the two-band model, the thermoelectric performance at different doping levels is predicted, finding zT=0.2 and 0.1 for p and n type, respectively, at 300 K, and zT=0.23 and 0.32 for p and n type at 600 K. Given the reasonably high zT that is comparable in magnitude for both n and p type, a thermoelectric device with a single compound used for both legs is feasible.

BioWorkbench: A high-performance framework for managing and analyzing bioinformatics experiments

Advances in sequencing techniques have led to exponential growth in biological data, demanding the development of large-scale bioinformatics experiments. Because these experiments are computation- and data-intensive, they require high-performance computing (HPC) techniques and can benefit from specialized technologies such as Scientific Workflow Management Systems (SWfMS) and databases. In this work, we present BioWorkbench, a framework for managing and analyzing bioinformatics experiments. This framework automatically collects provenance data, including both performance data from workflow execution and data from the scientific domain of the workflow application. Provenance data can be analyzed through a web application that abstracts a set of queries to the provenance database, simplifying access to provenance information. We evaluate BioWorkbench using three case studies: SwiftPhylo, a phylogenetic tree assembly workflow;SwiftGECKO, a comparative genomics workflow;and RASflow, a RASopathy analysis workflow. We analyze each workflow from both computational and scientific domain perspectives, by using queries to a provenance and annotation database. Some of these queries are available as a pre-built feature of the BioWorkbench web application. Through the provenance data, we show that the framework is scalable and achieves high-performance, reducing up to 98% of the case studies execution time. We also show how the application of machine learning techniques can enrich the analysis process. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Life Cycle Impact Assessment of Palm Biodiesel Production towards the Sustainability of Downstream Industry of Indonesia Palm Oil

The biodiesel industry is a downstream palm oil industry group that is projected to continue to grow in Indonesia. In addition to meeting national needs in order to fulfill the mandatory biodiesel acceleration program B20 in Year 2020 and B40 in Year 2050, the penetration of Indonesian palm oil biodiesel export market to the EU is more open with RED enforcement. Nevertheless, Indonesia's downstream palm oil industry including biodiesel industry is faced with various negative campaign issues as it has not achieved the value of GHG Emission saving default value of 35 percent to be called an environmentally friendly product. The purpose of this study is to identify the dominant global environmental aspects and impacts of the biodiesel production process from Indonesian palm oil and to provide improvement recommendations that encourage the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector of national biodiesel products. The sustainability of palm oil biodiesel industry is evaluated using life cycle impact assessment method. The research is done by combining quantitative and qualitative approach. The field survey was conducted in oil palm plantation companies, crude palm oil producers, and biodiesel producers located in North Sumatra. Improvement recommendations for improving the sustainability of Indonesia's downstream palm oil industry, especially the biodiesel industry from crude palm oil raw materials, refers to best practices and expert discussions.

Recently, reinforcement learning has been successfully applied to the logical game of Go, various Atari games, and even a 3D game, Labyrinth, though it continues to have problems in sparse reward settings. It is difficult to explore, but also difficult to exploit, a small number of successes when learning policy. To solve this issue, the subgoal and option framework have been proposed. However, discovering subgoals online is too expensive to be used to learn options in large state spaces. We propose Micro-objective learning (MOL) to solve this problem. The main idea is to estimate how important a state is while training and to give an additional reward proportional to its importance. We evaluated our algorithm in two Atari games: Montezuma's Revenge and Seaquest. With three experiments to each game, MOL significantly improved the baseline scores. Especially in Montezuma's Revenge, MOL achieved two times better results than the previous state-of-the-art model. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Tailored Organic Electrode Material Compatible with Sulfide Electrolyte for Stable All‐Solid‐State Sodium Batteries

All‐solid‐state sodium batteries (ASSSBs) with nonflammable electrolytes and ubiquitous sodium resource are a promising solution to the safety and cost concerns for lithium‐ion batteries. However, the intrinsic mismatch between low anodic decomposition potential of superionic sulfide electrolytes and high operating potentials of sodium‐ion cathodes leads to a volatile cathode–electrolyte interface and undesirable cell performance. Here we report a high‐capacity organic cathode, Na 4 C 6 O 6 , that is chemically and electrochemically compatible with sulfide electrolytes. A bulk‐type ASSSB shows high specific capacity (184 mAh g −1 ) and one of the highest specific energies (395 Wh kg −1 ) among intercalation compound‐based ASSSBs. The capacity retentions of 76 % after 100 cycles at 0.1 C and 70 % after 400 cycles at 0.2 C represent the record stability for ASSSBs. Additionally, Na 4 C 6 O 6 functions as a capable anode material, enabling a symmetric all‐organic ASSSB with Na 4 C 6 O 6 as both cathode and anode materials.

In this paper we present the system called Bardic, which was developed over three years as the core technology in the Narrative for Sensemaking project, an effort to automatically generate narrative from low-level event data as an aid for sense making. At its core, Bardic is a narrative report generator that uses a logic-based language to represent a story based on event/activity logs. Bardic generates different types of narrative discourse designed to convey different aspects of the underlying data. The system consists of a Unity application that allows users to explore generated stories and select parts of the stories to analyze in detail. In addition to its narrative generation capabilities, the application provides visualization and query capabilities. In this paper we provide screen shots of the application in use, show examples of narrative output produced by Bardic, detail how Bardic generates its output, and discuss the current system's capabilities and limitations.
