All-optical image processing based on metasurfaces is a swiftly advancing field of technology, due to its high speed, large integrability and inherently low energy requirements. So far, the proposed devices have been focusing on canonical operations, such as differentiations to perform edge detection across all objects in a complex scene. Yet, undesired background noise and clutter can hinder such operations, requiring target selection with digital post-processing which inherently limits the overall accuracy, efficiency and speed. Here, we introduce an optical solution for real-time size-selective image processing and experimentally demonstrate the concept with a metal-dielectric-metal film performing a spatial band-pass filter in momentum space. We show high-resolution (~0.9 μm) edge detection and real-time dynamic denoising, ideally suited for bio-imaging applications and target recognitions. Our demonstrated k-space filtering metasurface expands the scope of nonlocal flat optics for analog image processing, ushering in opportunities for ultra-compact, cost-effective, and multifunctional image processors. © The Author(s) 2025.

Functional oxides exhibit a diverse range of correlated electron phenomena, some of which are highly attractive for novel electronic, magnetic, and optical devices. Despite decades of advancement of our fundamental understanding of these materials, they consistently fall short of realizing their promise in functional devices. We identify a significant bottleneck toward device realization to be surface overoxidation. Protective caps can effectively prevent overoxidation, but their interfaces with functional oxides are not well understood. These interfaces are critical for effectively using functional oxides in field-effect devices, where "the interface is the device." This work addresses the chemistry and physics of the interface between protective caps and the correlated metal SrVO3, a model functional oxide. Our comparison of five different cap materials reveals effective protection and similar SrVO3 surface chemistry in all cases. Systematic comparisons of surface and bulk-sensitive photoelectron spectra reveal that negligible interface redox takes place, elucidating the cap-SrVO3 interface chemistry. This work demonstrates a robust and simple solution to the surface overoxidation problem in vanadates, paving the way toward effectively using these materials in field-effect devices. Our conclusions are general and can be applied to numerous other systems, thus moving oxide electronics closer to the realization of functional devices. © 2025 Author(s).

ESG Investing: A Statistically Valid Approach to Data-Driven Decision Making and the Impact of ESG Factors on Stock Returns and Risk

This study examines the impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors on economic investment from a statistical perspective, aiming to develop a tested investment strategy that capitalizes on the connection between ESG factors and financial performance. ESG investing: A statistically valid approach to data-driven decision-making (ESGI-SVADDM) investment strategy is based on a rigorous, statistically valid approach that utilizes data, math, statistics, and data science libraries to drive investment decisions, eliminating the need for personal opinions and subjectivity. The process includes establishing an investment thesis, formulating testable hypotheses (HPS), retrieving and refining relevant data, calculating relevant measures, and testing and validating all hypotheses. The study uses S&P 500 stock data and ESG data from Sustainalytics to test the hypotheses. The empirical tests conducted revealed a negative correlation between ESG risk and expected returns, as well as a positive trend in the relationship between ESG risk and the overall risk of stocks. Moreover, the study found that higher ESG risk scores are associated with lower returns for investors, and that adopting a strategy of investing in stocks with low ESG risk and shorting stocks with high ESG risk yields superior returns compared to the market portfolio. © 2013 IEEE.

In this review, we present an overview of numerical methods to solve the binary Allen–Cahn (AC) equation, which is extensively used to model phase separation processes in materials science. It describes the time-dependent evolution of interfaces between two phases and accounts for both local reaction kinetics and diffusion effects. This equation plays a critical role in understanding the behavior of interfaces. The AC equation has various applications across fields such as materials science, physics, and biology, where it helps to analyze and predict phenomena such as phase transitions, grain boundary motion, and pattern formation in complex systems. Its importance lies in its ability to model the dynamics of interfaces and help the study of pattern formation and phase transitions in diverse environments. We discuss various computational methodologies developed for this important mathematical model and describe their strengths, limitations, and applications in diverse scientific domains. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Trade Ease with Machine Learning and AWS

Global trading is undergoing significant changes, necessitating modifications to the trading strategies. This study presents a newly developed cloud-based trading strategy that uses Amazon Web Services (AWS), machine learning (ML), and data science to automate trading tasks. The study begins by creating a machine learning trading strategy using a customized deep neural network (DNN). The strategy was then tested using a trading station before deployment on a cloud machine. The execution of the strategy resulted in a total profit of 42.74526 USD, with a test accuracy score of 87.45% and a training accuracy score of 89.15% over 6047 epochs. The roadmap provides a step-by-step overview of the entire process from strategy development to execution. In addition, this study offers insights into related issues and solutions that can enhance the effectiveness of trading strategies. Overall, this study contributes significantly to the field of cloud-based trading strategies and opens avenues for future research. © 2013 IEEE.

In 2022, tobacco was the top export commodity, generating $106.3 million in sales. East Java Province contributes significantly to Indonesia's tobacco production, with an annual output of 188.6 thousand tons. Jember Regency is the area in East Java Province which is a Kasturi tobacco cultivation area. The productivity of Kasturi tobacco continues to decrease due to several factors that can affect the survival of the tobacco. This study aims to analyze the survival of Kasturi tobacco by creating stratified Cox and extended Cox models in order to handle factors that cannot fulfill the proportional hazard assumption. Based on the results of the analysis, the stratified Cox model is the best model with AIC and BIC values of 798.108 and 805.5748 respectively, while the extended Cox has AIC and BIC values of 840.2186 and 850.1732 respectively. Variables that can significantly affect the survival of Kasturi tobacco are the variable concentration of ZA fertilizer, pesticide concentration. The addition of ZA fertilizer must be appropriate, because if excessive it can cause poisoning of tobacco plants. Likewise with pesticides, if excessive it will cause damage to the leaves. This policy can increase the productivity of Kasturi tobacco. Then, Jember Regency contributes greater export capacity. • This paper aims to determine the factors that affect the survival of Kasturi tobacco plants in Jember • By using the extended Cox model, the best one is obtained using the Heaviside function with AIC and BIC values of 840.2186 and 850.1732, respectively • The stratified Cox model is better than the extended Cox model, which has AIC and BIC values of 798.108 and 805.5748, respectively

Measurement of peripheral nerve magnetostimulation thresholds of a head solenoid coil between 200 Hz and 88.1 kHz

Objective: Magnetic fields switching at kilohertz frequencies induce electric fields in the body, which can cause peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). Although magnetostimulation has been extensively studied below 10 kHz, the behavior of PNS at higher frequencies remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate PNS thresholds at frequencies up to 88.1 kHz and to explore deviations from the widely accepted hyperbolic strength-duration curve (SDC). Methods and procedures: PNS thresholds were measured in the head of 8 human volunteers using a solenoidal coil at 16 distinct frequencies, ranging from 200 Hz to 88.1 kHz. A hyperbolic SDC was used as a reference to compare the frequency-dependent behavior of PNS thresholds. Results: Contrary to the predictions of the hyperbolic SDC, PNS thresholds did not decrease monotonically with frequency. Instead, thresholds reached a minimum near 25 kHz, after which they increased by an average of 39% from 25 kHz to 88.1 kHz across subjects. This pattern indicates a significant deviation from previously observed behavior at lower frequencies. Conclusion: Our results suggest that PNS thresholds exhibit a non-monotonic frequency dependence at higher frequencies, diverging from the traditional hyperbolic SDC. These findings offer critical data for refining neurodynamic models and provide insights for setting PNS safety limits in applications like MRI gradient coils and magnetic particle imaging (MPI). Further investigation is needed to understand the biological mechanisms driving these deviations beyond 25 kHz. Clinical impact: These findings call for further basic research into biological mechanisms underlying high frequency PNS threshold trends, and supports refinement of safety guidelines for MRI and MPI systems for clinical implementation. © 2013 IEEE.

Evaluation of desktop operating systems under thrashing conditions

Virtual memory mechanisms allow offering more RAM memory space to processes than the amount of memory physically available in the system, using disk space as a memory extension. When there is not enough RAM memory to satisfy the active processes' working sets, the system throughput may be significantly reduced, due to the excessive paging activity. Such situation is known as memory thrashing. This paper presents an evaluation of some commodity desktop operating systems under thrashing conditions. We also identify and discuss the performance data about memory management available in each system and the mechanisms available to collect it. A portable benchmark tool was developed to bring each system to a thrashing situation and then pull it back to normality. The results observed from the systems under study are compared and discussed. © 2012 The Brazilian computer Society.
