This work presents a methodology for using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Genetic programming (GP) for the classification of multi-class objects found in digital images. The image classification process is performed by using features extracted from images, through feature extraction algorithms, reduced by PCA and labeled by similarity comparing with other previously classified objects. GP uses two sets of elements: terminals, composed by the features extracted by PCA; and non-terminals, composed by algebraic operations. The fitness function was defined by the product of sensibility and specificity, two performance measures. A penalty term is also used to decrease the number of nodes of the tree, while minimally affecting the quality of solutions. The proposed approach was applied to set of 2739 digital images divided into objects representing airplanes, motorbikes, background from google, faces and watch classes, provided by the Caltech101 image database. The proposed approach was compared with SVM, Naïve Bayes and C4.5. Results suggest that the approach PCA+GP is able to evolve solutions for the problem as a simple classification rule with true positive rate above 70%. Additionally, we observe that PCA+PG obtained results slightly better than SVM and C4.5, besides these methods give a result that is not comprehensible by humans.

This research presents the risk of disease spreading of African Trypanosomiasis using Fuzzy logic and Dempster-Shafer belief theory. Integrating Fuzzy Logic and Dempster-Shafer belief theory by calculating the similarity between Fuzzy membership function in the context to detect the risk of disease spreading of African Trypanosomiasis and finally to develop a realistic and useful Web mapping for displaying maps on a screen to locate the risk of African Trypanosomiasis spreading. The risk of African Trypanosomiasis spreading is not classified according to higher population density which is equal to higher risk. This research has considered population changes in an area to detect the risk of African Trypanosomiasis spreading. The experts provide opinion in terms of basic probability assignment for interval or crisp focal elements. Those basic probability assignments are proposed based on the similarity measure between membership function. The similarity between Fuzzy membership function is calculated to get basic probability assignment. The highest percentage of the risk of disease spreading of African Trypanosomiasis is 17%. In Angola and Zambia, the highest basic probability assignment of the risk of disease spreading of African Trypanosomiasis is very low which is equal to 0.173. The risk of disease spreading of African Trypanosomiasis in areas which include Angola, Botswana, Congo, Congo DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Sand production in petroleum wells is a major concern for the petroleum industry. Sand production results in erosion of pipelines and damage to equipment which may lead to production shutdown and large economic losses. Detection of produced sand is important for optimizing flow rates and measuring the success of sand mitigation techniques. Recently, microwave nondestructive testing was considered as a potential new sensing solution for the detection of sand production. This paper presents preliminary simulations and measurements for such a sensing approach using open-ended waveguides. Different production scenarios are considered for a stratified flow regime. The results indicate that this sensing method can detect the presence of sand. Preliminary measurements are also presented for varying amounts of sand that further support the potential of this technique.

These objectives of the study are 1) to design cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment, and 2) to evaluate the designed cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment. The research procedures are divided into two phases. The first phase is to design cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment, and the second phase is to evaluate the cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment. The sample group of this study consists of five experts selected by purposive sampling method. Data were analyzed by arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The research findings are as follows: 1. The cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment consist of three steps are 1) the introduction to the lesson 2) the activities are subdivided in to three sub steps are 2.1 to introduced into a group activities 2.2 the cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment, and 2.3 evaluation and testing, and 3) The conclusion of lesson. 2. The experts agree that cooperative problem-based learning activities to enhance cooperation skill in online environment are the highest level of appropriateness.

In this work, we investigate the likelihood of association between realtime, TeV-PeV energy neutrino alerts from IceCube and optical counterparts in the form of core-collapse supernovae (CC SNe). The optical follow-up of IceCube alerts requires two main instrumental capabilities: (1) deep imaging, since 73% of neutrinos would come from CC SNe at redshifts z > 0.3, and (2) a large field of view (FoV), since typical IceCube muon neutrino pointing accuracy is on the order of ∼ 1 deg. With Blanco/DECam (gri to 24th magnitude and 2.2 deg diameter FoV), we performed a triggered optical follow-up observation of two IceCube alerts, IC170922A and IC171106A on ∼ 6 nights during the ∼ 3 weeks following each alert. For the IC170922A (IC171106A) follow-up observations, we expect that 12.1% (9.5%) of coincident CC SNe at z 0.3 are detectable, and that on average, 0.23 (0.07) unassociated SNe in the neutrino 90% containment regions also pass our selection criteria. We find two candidate CC SNe that are temporally coincident with the neutrino alerts in the FoV, but none in the 90% containment regions, which is statistically consistent with expected rates of background CC SNe for these observations. If CC SNe are the dominant source of TeV-PeV neutrinos, we would expect an excess of coincident CC SNe to be detectable at the 3σ confidence level using DECam observations similar to those of this work for ∼ 60 (∼ 200) neutrino alerts with (without) redshift information for all candidates. The particular solutions(PS) and fundamental solutions(FS) in polar coordinates can be found in many textbooks, but with much less coverage in elliptic coordinates [1]. Since the elliptic domains with elliptic holes may be found in some engineering problems, the PS and the FS expansions in elliptic coordinates are essential for numerical computations. For Dirichlet problems of Laplace's equation in elliptic domains, the null field method(NFM), the interior field method(IFM) and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) are reported in [2]. There seems to exist very few reports for mixed problems, where the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are assigned on the exterior and the interior boundaries, simultaneously. This paper is devoted to such mixed problems by the NFM and the IFM, and the explicit algebraic equations are derived for elliptic domains. Besides, other effective particular solutions(PS) are sought, and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) [3] is employed. The CTM may be used for Robin problems in elliptic domains. The effective algorithms for the mixed problems of Laplace's equation on elliptic domains are the main goal of this paper.

A critical juncture in the undergraduate STEM education pathway is the first two years of college when the majority of attrition occurs because students experience many academic challenges in gatekeeping courses. Among many factors to this failure, an important one is attributed to the lack of engaging pedagogy inside and outside classrooms. Through this NSF WIDER program sponsored planning project, a team of faculty and administrators at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) are implementing evidence-based instructional practices in foundation courses in STEM curricula. Recognizing that it is essential to implement effective pedagogy in gateway courses where most attrition occurs, this project has conducted a pilot study, which focuses on: (1) collecting baseline data about the extent to which evidence-based practices are currently being used in STEM gateway courses;(2) redesigning three foundational gateway courses in electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics by applying evidence-based teaching strategies-student-centered problem-based teaching(SC-PBT), example-based teaching, and just-in-time teaching (JITT);(3) incorporating classroom and laboratory activities that require active student engagement, conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving;and (4) Employing model students to lead Supplementary Instruction (SI) courses with evidence-based peer-to-peer learning strategies. The student assessment data indicated the effectiveness of the evidence-based instructional practices, the SI peer-to-peer learning strategies, as well as existing engagement challenges. In addition, positive feedback was obtained from the student survey data on the redesigned courses. The broader impact of this project is twofold. First, data generated through assessment and evaluation is expected to support the theoretical rationale that systematic change in STEM education must include a wide spectrum of stakeholders (administrators, facul
