Heavily-doped strained germanium (Ge) can emit light efficiently thanks to its pseudo direct band gap characteristic. This makes Ge a good candidate for on-chip monolithic light sources in silicon (Si) photonics systems. We propose fin-shaped Ge-Si heterojunction lightemitting diode (LED) with metal gates, which can enhance light emission by coupling with surface plasmon resonant modes and modulate light emission from the LED. We verify these two aspects through numerical analysis and device simulations. We develop the method to find the optimal device structure and specific device dimensions to maximize the spontaneous emission rate enhancement. Also we find that the LED can be modulated by a gate voltage bias. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

In continuous cardiac monitoring through wireless Body Sensor Networks (BSNs) using ECG signals, signal quality can be deteriorated due to several factors, including, noise, low battery power and network transmission problems. Body movements occurring when a subject performs activities of daily living (ADLs) are also major causes of high false alarm rates. This paper presents a hybrid framework for false alarm reduction in continuous cardiac monitoring, where classification models constructed using machine learning algorithms are used for labeling input signals and a rule-based expert system is used for combining the classification results into make a final decision. From their extracted low-level features, ECG signal portions are labeled with heartbeat types and also signal quality levels. Meanwhile, low-level features from 3D acceleration signals are used for predicting types of activities. Taking signal quality levels and activity types into considerations, the rule-based expert system then determines whether abnormal ECG portions should trigger alarms or should be ignored. The proposed framework is validated using two datasets: one is obtained from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and the other is acquired from 10 subjects while they are performing ADLs. The results of the experiments demonstrate that our proposed framework can reduce false alarm rates in continuous cardiac monitoring and potentially assist physicians in diagnosing a vast amount of data acquired from wireless sensors.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are employing heterogeneous technologies now a days to meet the increasing demands of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications such as enriched multimedia, video conferencing, gaming and online collaboration. Deployment and maintenance cost for infrastructures are also a major concern. This work proposes a framework, capable of catering multiple technologies simultaneously (such as local area network, wide area networks and cellular networks), that deploys wired and wireless integrated technologies to exploit the advantages of both. Therefore, it offers the architecture based on radio over fiber technology to meet the future requirements of high data rate for Road Vehicle Communication (RVC) in VANETs and it comes up with the most important and perhaps desperately needed feature of ‘Future technology Support’ yielding very high data rates support. Several traditionally deployed architectures are striving to come up with the future needs but due to their various limitations they were unable to attain their expected outcomes. The proposed RoF based architecture justifies its need inducing a true value and powerful features to dramatically enhance the overall performance of the entire system. Several evaluation parameters have been chosen that clearly present the strength of proposed RoF framework and prove that RoF framework is the better option for the service providers in the area of ITS applications.

Floor plan construction via anonymous Wi-Fi signal fragment matching

Floor plan construction is the basis for fingerprint-based localization and people's activity learning, especially in the environments where the geometrical map is not available or does not exist. To this end, we propose a new received signal strength (RSS) fragment matching approach to identify the location points (LPs) in floor plan as the overlapped pieces between the fragments. Then, by means of the Smith-Waterman alignment, each LP can be recognized as a winning path in scoring space. Finally, we use the Allen's interval algebra to assemble the time-stamped LPs into a floor plan in target area. The experiments with the actual Wi-Fi RSS measurements recorded in HKUST campus demonstrate that our proposed approach performs better than the conventional K-means clustering and spectral clustering in floor plan construction. © 2014 ICIC International.

Method of teaching and inheriting for skill is almost oral. It is not quantitative but qualitative. Quantitative inheriting of skill is difficult. In this paper, after tracking of a subject's skill motion using Microsoft Kinect, a subject's motion is visualized as the curved surface. A curved surface is fitted in the positions of a subject's joint, or the direction of trajectories. Expert and beginner perform swimming and karate motion. After the motions are tracked, the trajectories of joints are transformed to a curved surface. The difference of an action between an expert and a beginner is extracted by investigating curvatures and form on the visualized curved surface. Therefore, we expected that technical skill is transferred easily.

Spindle-shaped nematic droplets (tactoids) form in solutions of rod-like molecules at the onset of the liquid crystalline phase. Their unique shape and internal structure result from the interplay of the elastic deformation of the nematic and anisotropic surface forces. The balance of these forces dictates that tactoids must display a continuous variation in aspect ratio and director-field configuration. Yet, such continuous transition has eluded observation for decades: tactoids have displayed either a bipolar configuration with particles aligned parallel to the droplet interface or a homogeneous configuration with particles aligned parallel to the long axis of the tactoid. Here, we report the first observation of the continuous transition in shape and director-field configuration of tactoids in true solutions of carbon nanotubes in chlorosulfonic acid. This observation is possible because the exceptional length of carbon nanotubes shifts the transition to a size range that can be visualized by optical microscopy. Polarization micrographs yield the interfacial and elastic properties of the system. Absorbance anisotropy measurements provide the highest nematic order parameter (S=0.79) measured to date for a nematic phase of carbon nanotubes at coexistence with its isotropic phase.

We have created a visual representation called Stratified Attribute Tracking (SAT) Diagram to explicate trends that are otherwise implicit in learning analytics data. SAT Diagram is a unified graph that enables tracking individual attribute values in a dataset and stratifying them according to criteria set by the researcher. SAT diagram represents the transition of samples between strata across attributes. In this paper we introduce the SAT diagram and illustrate how to generate, interpret and analyze them. We believe the process of SAT diagram generation would enable exploring deeper research questions on learning data.

First year undergraduate students in engineering often face difficulties in solving engineering drawing (ED) problems. The potential reasons for this could be either the students' deficiency in visualizing spatial relationships or the instructional method used. We have developed a three-hour MR training using Blender 3D, an open source 3D animation software. In this paper, we present experimental evidence of the effect of our training on the improvement of problem solving skills in ED. We analyzed the results and found them to be significant. Also, the qualitative analysis of students' responses to the open ended questions revealed that, they found training useful in resolving their difficulties in solving ED problems.
