DC faults may cause severe disruptions in continuity of service to vital loads in a shipboard integrated power system, hence detection, isolation, and protection against such faults must be incorporated in both medium-voltage DC (MVDC) and low-voltage DC (LVDC) systems. Here we consider the effectiveness of existing z-source breakers and propose several new designs more appropriate for fault detection in MVDC and LVDC systems. In particular, we perform an optimization study that aims to minimize dissipation and weight and we identify the key parameters for use in MVDC and LVDC systems. Preliminary verification and validation studies are also included.

Web services accounts have recently been automatically acquired in large quantities by bot-programs, which are malicious. Furthermore, the acquired accounts have been used for spamming, which is a problem for service operators or Internet users. Completely Automated Public Turing Tests To Tell computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHAs) have generally been adopted for Web Services as a method of preventing Web services accounts from being acquired. These are Turing tests for users of Web services to distinguish between humans and bot-programs. There are several types of methods in CAPTCHAs, but the most typical in this field are text-based. However, these methods can be decoded with a high degree of probability, because of the OCR technology that has evolved. Much research on resolving this problem has been proposed. For example, one method in this research adds distortion to characters to make it difficult to analyze them with OCR. Despite this research, OCR has a higher success rate than humans. Thus, we propose a practical method for CAPTCHA in this paper in which only humans can provide correct answers by applying a modal completion.

Defects in liquid crystals are used to model topological entities ranging from Skyrmions in high-energy physics to early-universe cosmic strings, as well as find practical applications in self-assembly of diffraction gratings and in scaffolding of plasmonic nanoparticles, but they are hard to control and organize into three-dimensional lattices. We laterally scan focused laser beams to produce periodic arrays of twist-stabilized defects forming either linear (fingers) or axially symmetric (torons) configurations in partially polymerizable liquid crystal films. Polymerization allows for stabilization of these structures and the formation of three-dimensional arrays of defects by stacking of the thin cholesteric films on top of each other. In the process of fabrication of such arrays, we polymerize the liquid crystal film with an array of torons or fingers and then sequentially produce and photopolymerize new liquid crystal layers on top of it, thus obtaining a three-dimensional structure of twist-stabilized defects in a layer-by-layer fashion. Templating by the polymerized layer spontaneously yields ordered organization of fingers and torons in the new cholesteric layer, thus enabling a three-dimensional ordered structure of defects. Nondestructive three-dimensional imaging of director fields by use of three-photon excitation fluorescence polarizing microscopy reveals the nature of topological singularities and physical underpinnings behind the observed templating effect. Three-dimensional patterning of defects templates the self-assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles into individual singularities and their arrays, laying the groundwork for potential applications in nanophotonics, plasmonics, metamaterial fabrication, and nanoscale energy conversion.
