Preparation of NIR Reflective Brown Pigment

Complex inorganic brown pigments having a high near infrared solar reflectance have been synthesized. Fe2O3 is the host component and mixtures of Sb2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 were used as the guest components. Sb2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 were mixed into 40 different compositions. It was found that a sample, denoted by S31, with a composition of Fe2O3, Sb2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 of 70, 10, 12, 2 and 6 wt% respectively, gives a maximum near infrared solar reflectance of 46.7%. Brown pigment colours were measured in CIE L*a*b* colour index. The S31 pigment powder was then prepared as a reflective coating material with different amounts of pigment powder from 4-8 g in 100 g of ceramic glaze. The prepared materials were sprayed on the biscuit clay tiles for reflectance measurements. It was found that 5 g of S31 pigment powder mixed with 100 g of ceramic glaze gives the highest near-infrared reflectance value of 41.3%. The newly synthesized pigment is a suitable ceramic roof coating for its high reflectance performance and the durability performing once the ceramic roof installed on house.

Context-Aware Computing aims at making computing systems able to capture context information and to adapt to it, providing context-related services and information to users. Context is any information used to characterize in some sense a person, object, or place of interest for a given user or application. Initial definitions of context-aware computing date from twenty years ago, but until now it was not yet fully made available to end users. This paper proposes a generic model of a context manager for general-purpose operating systems, alongside with its implementation and first evaluation results. This model includes methods for building, storing, and managing contexts, and an API to make such information available to applications and users.

In this extended version of our Symposium on computer Animation paper [1], we describe a domain-decomposition method to simulate articulated deformable characters entirely within a subspace framework. We have added a parallelization and eigendecomposition performance analysis, and several additional examples to the original symposium version. The method supports quasistatic and dynamic deformations, nonlinear kinematics and materials, and can achieve interactive time-stepping rates. To avoid artificial rigidity, or "locking," associated with coupling low-rank domain models together with hard constraints, we employ penalty-based coupling forces. The multidomain subspace integrator can simulate deformations efficiently, and exploits efficient subspace-only evaluation of constraint forces between rotated domains using a novel Fast Sandwich Transform (FST). Examples are presented for articulated characters with quasistatic and dynamic deformations, and interactive performance with hundreds of fully coupled modes. Using our method, we have observed speedups of between 3 and 4 orders of magnitude over full-rank, unreduced simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

Biometrics recognition systems implemented in a realworld environment often have to be content with adverse biometrics signal acquisition which can vary greatly in this environment. This includes acoustic noise that can contaminate speech signals or artifacts that can alter heart sound signals. In order to overcome these recognition errors, researchers all over the world apply various methods such as normalization, feature extraction, classification to address this issue. Recently, combining biometrics modalities has proven to be an effective strategy to improve the performance of biometrics systems. The approach in this paper is based on biometrics recognition which used the heart sound signal as a feature that can't be easily copied The Mel- Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is used as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) is used as the matching model algorithm. A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart Sound Speaker identification (HS-SI) model is 81.9% while (S-SI) the rate for the Speech Speaker Independent model is 99.3% for a 21 client, 40 imposter database. Heart sound- speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%. In order to reach a higher security level an alternative to the above approach, which is based on multimodal and a fusion technique, is implemented into the system. The best performance of the work is based on simple-sum score fusion with a pricewise-linear normalization technique which provides an EER of 0.69%.

Animal behavior analysis has, in the past, taken a very low tech approach, with direct observer surveillance and automated video surveillance as the norm. These methods are insufficient when one wants to study interactions between large numbers of animals in their housing environment. In this paper we use a housing environment that has been equipped with a system of RFID sensors. RFID transponders were implanted into the study animal, the naked mole rat. The resulting data was analyzed using principal component analysis and frequent pattern mining. Results showed that these methods can identify time periods of high behavioral activity from that of low aclivity, along with which groups of animals interacted with one another. This paper deals with the statistical modeling of uplink inter-cell interference (ICI) considering greedy scheduling with power adaptation based on channel conditions. The derived model is implicitly generalized for any kind of shadowing and fading environments. More precisely, we develop a generic model for the distribution of ICI based on the locations of the allocated users and their transmit powers. The derived model is utilized to evaluate important network performance metrics such as ergodic capacity, average fairness and average power preservation numerically. Monte-Carlo simulation details are included to support the analysis and show the accuracy of the derived expressions. In parallel to the literature, we show that greedy scheduling with power adaptation reduces the ICI, average power consumption of users, and enhances the average fairness among users, compared to the case without power adaptation.

The basic idea of Network Centric Warfare (NCW) is that data processing capabilities of computers and communication technologies of a network can be leveraged to guarantee information sharing, which will increase the efficiency of running a military. Amid advancements being made in IT, the Korea military is one of the militaries in the world doing research on ways of conducting more effective warfare, which it aims to achieve by connecting each of the entities together and sharing battlefield resources. However, maintaining interoperability between different systems is an issue, caused by the fact that different militaries have different tactics and weapon systems. In this paper, the current state of interoperability is examined, for when the Korean military builds a C4I system in preparation for future warfare. Furthermore, interoperability cases in the US are analyzed, and matters of consideration and various technologies for interoperability are proposed. © 2012 Springer science+Business Media.

We argue here that, in recent years, the world's financial markets have become a globally interconnected complex adaptive ultra-large-scale socio-technical system-of-systems, and that this has important consequences for how the financial markets should be engineered and managed in future. Major failures in the financial markets can now occur at super-human speeds, as was witnessed in the "Flash Crash" of May 6th 2010. Events such as the Flash Crash may become more commonplace in future, unless lessons are learned from other fields where complex adaptive socio-technical systems-of-systems have to be engineered for high-integrity, safety-critical applications. In this document we review the literature on failures in risky technology and high-integrity approaches to safety-critical SoS engineering. We conclude with an argument that, in the specific case of the global financial markets, there is an urgent need to develop major national strategic modeling and predictive simulation capabilities, comparable to national-scale meteorological monitoring and modeling capabilities. The intent here is not to predict the price-movements of particular financial instruments or asset classes, but rather to provide test-rigs for principled evaluation of systemic risk, estimating probability density functions over spaces of possible outcomes, and thereby identifying potentially high-consequence failure modes in the simulations, before they occur in real life, by which time it is typically too late. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Information kiosks, building directories, and area maps are useful for visitors to explore a new large place. Although several digital information or map systems have been equipped with touch screens, many existing systems are still regular non-interactive screens to display static or dynamic information. This motivates the authors to propose an efficient and economic solution to transform existing non-interactive information kiosks and maps into natural interactive systems that can accept pointing gestures, a common type of gestures in communication between people. The authors' vision-based method exploits the visual geometrical characteristics of pointing gestures thus is independent from skin color and can recognize pointing gestures with various pointing objects, such as fingers, bare hands, hands with gloves, or any arbitrary pointing objects. Experiments show that a single regular processor can process up to 10 interactive maps with less than 17ms with the average accuracy of more than 90%. Furthermore, by using template matching, a user can get the detailed guidance for the best route into his/her mobile device just by capturing the information being displayed in the interactive map.
