Interpretation of semantic orientation of a word depends on the domain topic it describes. Based on Semantic Orientation Pointwise Mutual Information (SO-PMI), we propose a framework for prediction of semantic orientations of words with respect to a domain topic. The framework exploits the number of hits obtained from an available search engine for calculating the SO-PMI value of a given pair of a domain topic and a word with unknown sentiment. For improvement of prediction accuracy, the framework adjusts SO-PMI values by employment of tuning parameters, which are learnt automatically from training data. The framework is evaluated on two different domain topics and the overall accuracy in the range of 66%-78% is obtained.

Performance of storage system has great impact on overall performance of I/O intensive systems. Data distribution across storage devices affects storage performance directly. Data migration can degrade system performance. This paper focuses on data placement issue in heterogeneous tiers of storage devices storing YouTube videos. In addition to storage capability and current workload, our data placement algorithm also takes into account future workload. Future workload is estimated from video's characteristics. Workload in all storage tiers is dynamically adjusted to achieve balance at all times. Four data placement algorithms were used to distribute 16,314 videos across 3-tier storage system in the experiment. The proposed algorithm resulted in a more balance workload distribution compared to round robin and random algorithms.

Medium-voltage DC electrical distribution is envisioned as a possible system for the warship of the future, bringing numerous advantages including a very power-dense architecture. This system takes the AC power produced by generators, immediately rectifies all power to DC and distributes it throughout the ship, requiring inversion back to AC for all AC loads. The question then arises whether it makes sense instead to route two parallel buses: an AC bus for all 60 Hz. AC loads and a DC bus to service all other loads. We model these two theoretical distribution systems in a notional destroyer using a preliminary design tool under development in our laboratory and find that the two-bus system is more efficient and lighter.
