FORMOSAT-2, Taiwanese satellite was launched on May 21, 2004 and operating successfully since then. It has a high spatial resolution sensor onboard for a daily revisit orbit. It is a new and appropriate satellite for daily observation of a particular site. Our previous work established a unique model for geometric correction of FORMOSAT-2 images. This paper furthers our work by applying this model for its subsequent utilization like Disaster Investigation, Environmental Monitoring, Vegetation Evaluation, and multi-temporal image matching. In this paper, we focus on the application of geometrically corrected imagery for disaster investigation/prediction. Different FORMOSAT-2 images are processed to show the disasters occurring around the world. This work is critical for disaster early warning monitoring and prevention measures.

In Internet, IP multicast has been used successfully to provide an efficient, best-effort delivery service for group communication applications. However, applications such as multiparty private conference, distribution of stock market information, pay per view and other subscriber services require secure multicast to protect integrity and confidentiality of the group traffic, and validate group member's authenticity. Providing secure multicast for group communication is problematic without a robust group key management. In this paper, we propose an anonymous group key management with ID-based Signature and secret sharing technologies to distribute a new group key securely to each participant of a group with only one rekey message whenever the group membership changes. The key management guarantees that a legal user, without revealing his/her real identity, can join a group after finishing the mutual authentication with the group initiator, and enforces the forward secrecy and backward secrecy.

Biology has played a key role in influencing the development and optimization of a significant variety of sensors that provide engineers new ideas for improvements to current technology, new sensor technology, and potential sensor miniaturization. Biological systems, such as plants and insects offer significant methods of flight, imaging, sensing, adaptation to environment, and locomotion. The biological domain provides inspiration at many levels, such as cellular, organism, and species. A biological system is any biological organism, organism subsystem, or portion of an organism that is observed to exist. Abstraction of the biological system using analogical reasoning allows an engineering designer to look for a specific solution through mimicry in an approach to biology-inspired design. The analogous approach relies on the idea of figuring out the basis of overall biological system and of each part or subsystem that achieves the overall goal.

We study both classical and quantum relation between two Hamiltonian systems which are mutually connected by time-dependent canonical transformation. One is ordinary conservative system and the other is timedependent Hamiltonian system. The quantum unitary operator relevant to classical canonical transformation between the two systems are obtained through rigorous evaluation. With the aid of the unitary operator, we have derived quantum states of the time-dependent Hamiltonian system through transforming the quantum states of the conservative system. The invariant operators of the two systems are presented and the relation between them are addressed. We showed that there exist numerous Hamiltonians, which gives the same classical equation of motion. Though it is impossible to distinguish the systems described by these Hamiltonians within the realm of classical mechanics, they can be distinguishable quantum mechanically.

Argumentation is a process that occurs often in ill-defined domains and that helps deal with the illdefinedness. Typically a notion of "correctness" for an argument in an ill-defined domain is impossible to define or verify formally because the underlying concepts are open-textured and the quality of the argument may be subject to discussion or even expert disagreement. Previous research has highlighted the advantages of graphical representations for learning argumentation skills. A number of intelligent tutoring systems have been built that support students in rendering arguments graphically, as they learn argumentation skills. The relative instructional benefits of graphical argument representations have not been reliably shown, however. In this paper we present a formative evaluation of LARGO (Legal ARgument Graph Observer), a system that enables law students graphically to represent examples of legal interpretation with hypotheticals they observe while reading texts of U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments. We hypothesized that, compared to a text-based alternative, LARGO's diagramming language geared toward depicting hypothetical reasoning processes, coupled with non-directive feedback, helps students better extract the important information from argument transcripts and better learn argumentation skills. A first pilot study, conducted with volunteer first-semester law students, provided support for the hypothesis. The system especially helped lower-aptitude students learn argumentation skills, and LARGO improved the reading skills of students as they studied expert arguments. A second study with LARGO was conducted as a mandatory part of a first-semester University law course. Although there were no differences in the learning outcomes of the two conditions, the second study showed some evidence that those students who engaged more with the argument diagrams through the advice did better than the text condition. Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. Experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Many organizations collect large amounts of data to support their business and decision making processes. The data collected from various sources may have data quality problems in it. These kinds of issues become prominent when various databases are integrated. The integrated databases inherit the data quality problems that were present in the source database. The data in the integrated systems need to be cleaned for proper decision making. Cleansing of data is one of the most crucial steps. In this research, focus is on one of the major issue of data cleansing i.e. ¿duplicate record detection¿ which arises when the data is collected from various sources. As a result of this research study, comparison among standard duplicate elimination algorithm (SDE), sorted neighborhood algorithm (SNA), duplicate elimination sorted neighborhood algorithm (DE-SNA), and adaptive duplicate detection algorithm (ADD) is provided. A prototype is also developed which shows that adaptive duplicate detection algorithm is the optimal solution for the problem of duplicate record detection. For approximate matching of data records, string matching algorithms (recursive algorithm with word base and recursive algorithm with character base) have been implemented and it is concluded that the results are much better with recursive algorithm with word base.
