Summary Being the second-largest country in the Middle East, Iran has a long history of civilisation during which several dynasties have been overthrown and established and health-related structures have been reorganised. Iran has had the replacement of traditional practices with modern medical treatments, emergence of multiple pioneer scientists and physicians with great contributions to the advancement of science, environmental and ecological changes in addition to large-scale natural disasters, epidemics of multiple communicable diseases, and the shift towards non-communicable diseases in recent decades. Given the lessons learnt from political instabilities in the past centuries and the approaches undertaken to overcome health challenges at the time, Iran has emerged as it is today. Iran is now a country with a population exceeding 80 million, mainly inhabiting urban regions, and has an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, malignancies, mental disorders, substance abuse, and road injuries.

The next generation of surgical robotics is poised to disrupt healthcare systems worldwide, requiring new frameworks for evaluation. However, evaluation during a surgical robot’s development is challenging due to their complex evolving nature, potential for wider system disruption and integration with complementary technologies like artificial intelligence. Comparative clinical studies require attention to intervention context, learning curves and standardized outcomes. Long-term monitoring needs to transition toward collaborative, transparent and inclusive consortiums for real-world data collection. Here, the Idea, Development, Exploration, Assessment and Long-term monitoring (IDEAL) Robotics Colloquium proposes recommendations for evaluation during development, comparative study and clinical monitoring of surgical robots—providing practical recommendations for developers, clinicians, patients and healthcare systems. Multiple perspectives are considered, including economics, surgical training, human factors, ethics, patient perspectives and sustainability. Further work is needed on standardized metrics, health economic assessment models and global applicability of recommendations.

The presence of the internet can penetrate the boundaries between countries and accelerate the spread and exchange of information throughout the world. Although there are many positive impacts of internet use, there are also negative impacts that disturb the community. One can easily become a criminal (cyber crime) only by creating blogs, accounts, applications, programs, sites in various mass media and social media to commit fraud, data theft, illegal use of credit cards, the spread of pornographic content, online gambling, online prostitution, hate speech, radicalism, terrorism and so on. To overcome crime in the virtual space, the government has issued Law No. 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to Law No. 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions. But not all internet users know and understand the substance of the law. Therefore, the government, employers and institutions that are engaged in information and communication technology have the responsibility to socialize the law to the public to prevent crime in the virtual space.

Kilonovae are a rare class of astrophysical transients powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei heavier than iron, synthesized in the merger of two compact objects 1–4. Over the first few days, the kilonova evolution is dominated by a large number of radioactive isotopes contributing to the heating rate2, 5. On timescales of weeks to months, its behavior is predicted to differ depending on the ejecta composition and merger remnant6–9. However, late-time observations of known kilonovae are either missing or limited10, 11. Here we report observations of a luminous red transient with a quasi-thermal spectrum, following an unusual gamma-ray burst of long duration. We classify this thermal emission as a kilonova and track its evolution up to two months after the burst. At these late times, the recession of the photospheric radius and the rapidly-decaying bolometric luminosity (Lbol ∝ t−2.7±0.4) support the recombination of lanthanide-rich ejecta as they cool. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright, millisecond-duration radio transients originating from extragalactic distances1. Their origin is unknown. Some FRB sources emit repeat bursts, ruling out cataclysmic origins for those events2-4. Despite searches for periodicity in repeat burst arrival times on time scales from milliseconds to many days2, 5-7, these bursts have hitherto been observed to appear sporadically, and though clustered8, without a regular pattern. Here we report the detection of a 16.35 ± 0.18 day periodicity (or possibly a higher frequency alias of that periodicity) from a repeating FRB 180916.J0158+65 detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project (CHIME/FRB) 4, 9. In 28 bursts recorded from 16th September 2018 through 30th October 2019, we find that bursts arrive in a 4.0-day phase window, with some cycles showing no bursts, and some showing multiple bursts, within CHIME's limited daily exposure. Our results suggest a mechanism for periodic modulation either of the burst emission itself, or through external amplification or absorption, and disfavour models invoking purely sporadic processes. (18F got its name from its address. The GSA is located at the intersection of 18th Street and F Street in Washington DC.) Hartley co‐founded 18F to be a laboratory of sorts—staffed by developers and designers hailing from both inside and outside government working together to build digital services that could be used across agencies. The executive director of the Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) program which was established by the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy in 2012 to pair talented diverse technologists and innovators with top civil servants and change‐makers working at the highest levels of the federal government. In August 2015 President Obama signed an Executive Order making the Presidential Innovation Fellows program a permanent part of the federal government going forward housed within the General Services Administration (GSA). He is also the deputy director of 18F (see Q&A page 13). Jennifer Pahlka is the founder and executive director of Code for America a San Francisco‐based nonprofit organization that according to the Washington Post “is the technology world's equivalent of the Peace Corps or Teach for America.” Known for her TED talk “Coding a Better Government” Pahlka came to the job after several years and various roles in the computer game industry. She was also one of the founders of the US Digital Service (see page 35).

She was a founder of 18F, the US government's in‐house digital services consultancy, and now she sees her workplace as a laboratory of sorts, staffed by designers as well as developers. As the executive director of the Presidential Innovation Fellows program, he looks to recruit the best and the brightest in technical, design, and entrepreneurial talent. Known for her TED talk, “Coding a Better Government,” Jennifer Pahlka helps design and technology professionals live the idea of government by the people, for the people .
