Two issues are addressed in this paper. Firstly, it investigates some important properties of bidirectional associative memories (BAM) and proposes an improved capacity estimate. Those properties are the encoding form of the input pattern pairs as well as their decoding, the orthogonality of the pattern pairs, the similarity of associated patterns, and the density of the pattern pairs. Secondly, it proposes an implementation approach to improve the storage capacity. The approach embraces three proposed methods, i.e., the bipolar-orthogonal augmentation, the set partition, and the combined method. Along with those methods is the construction of the set of bipolar orthogonal patterns.

Recently, there is considerable interest in automated extraction of 3-D information through image matching. This paper presents an image matching system using Three Line Scanner (TLS) images, The disparity constraint of the TLS images has been investigated and exploited to refine the initial disparity estimation, which is produced by a relaxation matching. The effectiveness of our method with TLS is demonstrated by comparing our results with those of matching only two line scanner images, It is shown that more accurate and reliable results are achieved with TLS.

Recent applications of fuzzy control have created an urgent demand for fuzzy modeling techniques. Several methods for identification of fuzzy models from numerical input-output samples have been proposed. Among them, Sugeno and Yasukawa's method [6], which employs fuzzy c-means clustering, holds significant promises. This paper improves the method of Sugeno and Yasukawa. Identified fuzzy models are tuned at various stages by means of genetic algorithms, i.e., the numbers of input variables and rules are reduced and membership function parameters are adjusted. The technique, when applied to a nonlinear system, demonstrates its efficiency in a comparison with the original method of Sugeno and Yasukama.

This paper presents the design and evaluation of a novel submesh allocation algorithm called the Optimized Buddy System which is derived from conventional binary buddy system. Our scheme is made feasible by using a bit-map to represent the status of the processors. The proposed scheme can be mapped into hardware directly to take the advantage of the speed of a pure combinational-logic implementation. Although the buddy system may allocate a submesh that is much larger than the requested size, the logic that finds a free submesh can be augmented by a "bit-flipper" to relinquish the unused portion at the end of the submesh. This effectively eliminates internal fragmentation. The hardware complexity of proposed scheme (i.e. and-gate tree, or-gate tree and bit-flipper) is O(m/spl times/n), where m/spl times/n is the total number of the processors. The unique blind spot issue of proposed system is also investigated. Simulation results show that the allocation efficiency of the proposed scheme is similar to the one that uses best-fit approach.

Our goal is to develop physically based lighting models and perceptually based rendering procedures for computer graphics that will produce synthetic images that are visually and measurably indistinguishable from real-world images. Fidelity of the physical simulation is of primary concern. Our research framework is subdivided into three sub-sections: the local light reflection model, the energy transport simulation, and the visual display algorithms. The first two subsections are physically based, and the last is perceptually based. We emphasize the comparisons between simulations and actual measurements, the difficulties encountered, and the need to utilize the vast amount of psychophysical research already conducted. Future research directions are enumerated. We hope that results of this research will help establish a more fundamental, scientific approach for future rendering algorithms. This presentation describes a chronology of past research in global illumination and how parts of our new system are currently being developed.

Fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic are essential approaches to uncertain and vague information representation and reasoning. This paper is focused on uncertainty about types of objects and reasoning with it. A fuzzy type is formulated as a pair of a basic type and a truth-value, where a basic type can be crisp or vague (in the intuitive sense). A structure for a class of truth-value lattices is proposed for this construction. Then, fuzzy type lattices are developed with the fuzzy sub-type partial order satisfying intuition, and fuzzy type intersection and union operations. The result forms a basis for development of an order-sorted fuzzy logic system.

In this paper we propose a technique to incorporate contextual information into object classification. In the real world there are cases where the identity of an object is ambiguous due to the noise in the measurements based on which the classification should be made. It is helpful to reduce the ambiguity by utilizing extra information referred to as context, which in our case is the identities of the accompanying objects. This technique is applied to white blood cell classification. Comparisons are made against "no context" approach, which demonstrates the superior classification performance achieved by using context. In our particular application, it significantly reduces false alarm rate and thus greatly reduces the cost due to expensive clinical tests.
