The ATLAS measurement of the inclusive top quark pair ( $$t\bar{t}$$ ) cross-section $$\sigma _{t\bar{t}}$$ in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ $$\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ has been updated using the final 2012 luminosity calibration. The updated cross-section result is: $$\begin{aligned} \sigma _{t\bar{t}}= 242.9\pm 1.7\pm 5.5\pm 5.1\pm 4.2\,\mathrm pb, \end{aligned}$$ where the four uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, knowledge of the integrated luminosity and of the LHC beam energy. The result is consistent with theoretical QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order. The measurement of the ratio of $$t\bar{t}$$ cross-sections at $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ $$\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ and $$\sqrt{s}=7$$ $$\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ , and the $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ $$\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ fiducial measurement corresponding to the experimental acceptance of the leptons, have also been updated.

Distributions of transverse momentum $$p_T^{\ell \ell }$$ and the related angular variable $$\phi ^*_\eta $$ of DrellΓÇôYan lepton pairs are measured in 20.3┬áfb $$^{-1}$$ of protonΓÇôproton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ ┬áTeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are corrected for detector effects and combined. Compared to previous measurements in protonΓÇôproton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=7$$ ┬áTeV, these new measurements benefit from a larger data sample and improved control of systematic uncertainties. Measurements are performed in bins of lepton-pair mass above, around and below the Z-boson mass peak. The data are compared to predictions from perturbative and resummed QCD calculations. For values of $$\phi ^*_\eta < 1$$ the predictions from the Monte Carlo generator ResBos are generally consistent with the data within the theoretical uncertainties. However, at larger values of $$\phi ^*_\eta $$ this is not the case. Monte Carlo generators based on the parton-shower approach are unable to describe the data over the full range of $$p_T^{\ell \ell }$$ while the fixed-order prediction of Dynnlo falls below the data at high values of $$p_T^{\ell \ell }$$ . ResBos and the parton-shower Monte Carlo generators provide a much better description of the evolution of the $$\phi ^*_\eta $$ and $$p_T^{\ell \ell }$$ distributions as a function of lepton-pair mass and rapidity than the basic shape of the data.

This paper presents a search for massive charged long-lived particles produced in pp collisions at s=13 TeV at the LHC using the ATLAS experiment. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1. Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of massive charged long-lived particles, such as R-hadrons. These massive particles are expected to be produced with a velocity significantly below the speed of light, and therefore to have a specific ionization higher than any Standard Model particle of unit charge at high momenta. The Pixel subsystem of the ATLAS detector is used to measure the ionization energy loss of reconstructed charged particles and to search for such highly ionizing particles. The search presented here has much greater sensitivity than a similar search performed using the ATLAS detector in the s=8 TeV data set, thanks to the increase in expected signal cross section due to the higher center-of-mass energy of collisions, to an upgraded detector with a new silicon layer close to the interaction point, and to analysis improvements. No significant deviation from Standard Model background expectations is observed, and lifetime-dependent upper limits on R-hadron production cross sections and masses are set. Gluino R-hadrons with lifetimes above 0.4 ns and decaying to qq¯ plus a 100 GeV neutralino are excluded at the 95% confidence level, with lower mass limit ranging between 740 and 1590 GeV. In the case of stable R-hadrons the lower mass limit at the 95% confidence level is 1570 GeV.

Measurements of normalized differential cross sections of top quark pair (tt¯) production are presented as a function of the mass, the transverse momentum and the rapidity of the tt¯ system in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of s=7 and 8 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1 at 7 TeV and 20.2 fb−1 at 8 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with top quark pair signatures are selected in the dilepton final state, requiring exactly two charged leptons and at least two jets with at least one of the jets identified as likely to contain a b hadron. The measured distributions are corrected for detector effects and selection efficiency to cross sections at the parton level. The differential cross sections are compared with different Monte Carlo generators and theoretical calculations of tt¯ production. The results are consistent with the majority of predictions in a wide kinematic range.

The recent advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies bring the potential of a better characterization of the genetic variation in humans and other organisms. In many occasions, either by design or by necessity, the sequencing procedure is performed on a pool of DNA samples with different abundances, where the abundance of each sample is unknown. Such a scenario is naturally occurring in the case of metagenomics analysis where a pool of bacteria is sequenced, or in the case of population studies involving DNA pools by design. Particularly, various pooling designs were recently suggested that can identify carriers of rare alleles in large cohorts, dramatically reducing the cost of such large-scale sequencing projects. A fundamental problem with such approaches for population studies is that the uncertainly of DNA proportions from different individuals in the pools might lead to spurious associations. Fortunately, it is often the case that the genotype data of at least some of the individuals in the pool is known. Here, we propose a method (eALPS) that uses the genotype data in conjunction with the pooled sequence data in order to accurately estimate the proportions of the samples in the pool, even in cases where not all individuals in the pool were genotyped (eALPS-LD). Using real data from a sequencing pooling study of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, we demonstrate that the estimation of the proportions is crucial, since otherwise there is a risk for false discoveries. Additionally, we demonstrate that our approach is also applicable to the problem of quantification of species in metagenomics samples (eALPS-BCR), and is particularly suitable for metagenomic quantification of closely-related species. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Search for pair production of Higgs bosons in the bb¯bb¯ final state using proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs-boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is carried out with 3.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector. The data are consistent with the estimated background and are used to set upper limits on the production cross section of Higgs-boson pairs times branching ratio to bb¯bb¯ for both nonresonant and resonant production. In the case of resonant production of Kaluza-Klein gravitons within the Randall-Sundrum model, upper limits in the 24 to 91 fb range are obtained for masses between 600 and 3000 GeV, at the 95% confidence level. The production cross section times branching ratio for nonresonant Higgs-boson pairs is also constrained to be less than 1.22 pb, at the 95% confidence level.

The production of Z bosons with one or two isolated high-energy photons is studied using pp collisions at s=8 TeV. The analyses use a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 collected by the ATLAS detector during the 2012 LHC data taking. The Zγ and Zγγ production cross sections are measured with leptonic (e+e−, μ+μ−, νν¯) decays of the Z boson, in extended fiducial regions defined in terms of the lepton and photon acceptance. They are then compared to cross-section predictions from the Standard Model, where the sources of the photons are radiation off initial-state quarks and radiative Z-boson decay to charged leptons, and from fragmentation of final-state quarks and gluons into photons. The yields of events with photon transverse energy ET>250 GeV from ℓ+ℓ−γ events and with ET>400 GeV from νν¯γ events are used to search for anomalous triple gauge-boson couplings ZZγ and Zγγ. The yields of events with diphoton invariant mass mγγ>200 GeV from ℓ+ℓ−γγ events and with mγγ>300 GeV from νν¯γγ events are used to search for anomalous quartic gauge-boson couplings ZZγγ and Zγγγ. No deviations from Standard Model predictions are observed and limits are placed on parameters used to describe anomalous triple and quartic gauge-boson couplings.

Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1 at s=13 TeV collected in 2015 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are required to have at least one jet with a transverse momentum above 250 GeV and no leptons. Several signal regions are considered with increasing missing-transverse-momentum requirements between ETmiss>250 GeV and ETmiss>700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model predictions. The results are translated into exclusion limits in models with large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark-matter candidates, and the production of supersymmetric particles in several compressed scenarios.

Searches for exclusively produced W boson pairs in the process pp(γγ)→pW+W−p and an exclusively produced Higgs boson in the process pp(gg)→pHp have been performed using e±μ∓ final states. These measurements use 20.2 fb−1 of pp collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy s=8 TeV at the LHC. Exclusive production of W+W− consistent with the Standard Model prediction is found with 3.0σ significance. The exclusive W+W− production cross section is determined to be σ(γγ→W+W−→e±μ∓X)=6.9±2.2(stat)±1.4(sys) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set at 95% confidence level as −1.7×10−6

A search for supersymmetry involving the pair production of gluinos decaying via third-generation squarks to the lightest neutralino (χ˜10) is reported. It uses an LHC proton-proton data set at a center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015. The signal is searched for in events containing several energetic jets, of which at least three must be identified as b jets, large missing transverse momentum, and, potentially, isolated electrons or muons. Large-radius jets with a high mass are also used to identify highly boosted top quarks. No excess is found above the predicted background. For χ˜10 masses below approximately 700 GeV, gluino masses of less than 1.78 TeV and 1.76 TeV are excluded at the 95% C.L. in simplified models of the pair production of gluinos decaying via sbottom and stop, respectively. These results significantly extend the exclusion limits obtained with the s=8 TeV data set.
