information kiosks, building directories, and area maps are useful for visitors to explore a new large place. Although several digital information or map systems have been equipped with touch screens, many existing systems are still regular non-interactive screens to display static or dynamic information. This motivates the authors to propose an efficient and economic solution to transform existing non-interactive information kiosks and maps into natural interactive systems that can accept pointing gestures, a common type of gestures in communication between people. The authors' vision-based method exploits the visual geometrical characteristics of pointing gestures thus is independent from skin color and can recognize pointing gestures with various pointing objects, such as fingers, bare hands, hands with gloves, or any arbitrary pointing objects. Experiments show that a single regular processor can process up to 10 interactive maps with less than 17ms with the average accuracy of more than 90%. Furthermore, by using template matching, a user can get the detailed guidance for the best route into his/her mobile device just by capturing the information being displayed in the interactive map.

This paper proposed an integration of heart sound and speech for biometrics application .The method the method selects the best fusion and normalization techniques for biometric system. The framework is developed and test the verification task. The approach in this paper is biometrics recognition, for example, providing features that can't be easily copied, such as the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) as the matching model algorithm .A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart sound-speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%. In order to reach a higher security level an alternative to the above approach, which is based on multimodal and a fusion technique, is implemented into the system. The best performance of the work is based on simple-sum score fusion with a pricewise-linear normalization technique which provides an EER of 0.69% while the fusion type Main Rule provide an EER of 1.1%.

This paper presents a bi-lingual Thai-English text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) system on Android mobile devices. The system deploys a Thai text processor and a well-known open-source English text processor, which can analyzes English text at high intelligibility. With hidden Markov model (HMM) based speech unit and audio streaming optimization, it can synthesize highly smoothed sounds at a fast response. This paper reveals the optimization of important components. Conditional random fields (CRF) successfully used in Thai word segmentation and a syllable-pattern based statistical modeling for Thai grapheme-to-phoneme conversion are assessed. Several types of speech parameters are compared for best performance. The optimized system produced as high as 3.68 mean opinion score (MOS) with response less than 2 seconds on both high and low specification devices.

The recent advances in Grid and Cloud computing make new types of applications possible. At the same time, they require an infrastructure to implement heterogeneous computing resources time and cost-savely. Here, approaches that utilize design patterns, i.e., proven solutions to existing problems, seem to provide a good approach to enable these kind of applications. In this paper, we investigated which design patterns are already used in the area of Grid computing nowadays. After a brief description of the literature study design, we present our findings which include the discovered design patterns, corresponding categories, and application areas.

This paper considers the problem of the compensation of an unknown dead zone in the input of a plant. A new compensation method is presented based on the estimation of an equivalent input disturbance (EID). Unlike other methods, this method does not require the exact information of a dead zone. First, we consider the dead zone as an input-dependent disturbance and employ an EID estimator to estimate it. Then, we incorporate the estimate in the control input and compensate the effect of the dead zone almost completely. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the method. We study the effect on the microwave S-parameters of adding a conjugated polymer layer to a deoxyribonucleic acid-based (DNA-based) biopolymer within a variable capacitor (varactor) using a capacitive test structure. The conjugated polymer we are using in this work is poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and the DNA-based biopolymer is DNA-CTMA. The results are compared to both the baseline DNA-based biopolymer and the conjugated polymer layer added to a layer of polyvinyl alcohol. The addition of the conjugated polymer layer underneath the DNA-based biopolymer is found to most significantly improve the stability and dielectric tuning of the DNA-based biopolymer. © 2012 IEEE.

The positive impact of an organization's information technology (IT) Governance maturity level on the organization's business performance has been stated by many researchers in the IT governance literature. However, there are reports that casted a doubt on such a claim. This study, yet another exploration on the subject, is aimed at investigating any correlation between a company's IT governance maturity level and its business performance - represented by a number of productivity measures. The company under this study is a publicly-listed company in the IT services industry. The IT governance maturity level is measured using the maturity model provided by Control Objective for information and Related technology (COBIT) version 4.1. The productivity measures are the profit per employee and the total factor productivity. Through a non-parametric statistical hypothesis testing method - the Spearman Rank Correlation Test - a positive correlation is found between the maturity level and the profit-based productivity measure, but not the total factor productivity measure. Investigating the latter result, we discovered an interesting observation that might explain why some studies did not find any positive correlation between the maturity level and certain business performance measures. In our case, we found that there was an apparent time lag between the improvement of the company's IT Governance maturity level and the increase in the company's productivity level. © 2011 Universitas Indonesia.
