Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. Experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Digital IIR notch filter has been employed in various communication systems to eliminated unwanted narrowband interference with known frequency. In this paper, the optimal multiple notch filter design is proposed based on the pole re-position technique. The optimality considered is based on the minimization of resulting filter magnitude response from the ideal notch magnitude response, measured in term of numerical sum of error square. Furthermore, by using Grobner basis, the symbolic solution and design method can be generalized to the higher number of notch frequencies case. The design algorithm can be implemented directly on Matlab platform and optimal filter coefficients can be found via numerical optimization/search. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that the designer can specify additional performance parameters such as stability margin (distant from largest pole to the nearest point on the unit circle), maximum passband gain and quality factor.

Risk prevention and alarm are crucial for home care of aged people who live alone. In this paper, an acousticallyanalytic approach is proposed to extract behavioral patterns for modeling and monitoring living activities. An experimental environment was established for collecting sound tracking data of behaviors from daily activities. Each sound tracking data was transcribed to the corresponding sound event sequences by caregivers and psychologists. A living activities mining algorithm is applied to extract meaningful sequences of sound event as behavioral patterns. Then K-means algorithm is adopted to classify events into several fuzzy clusters relating to living activities for modeling behaviors in daily activities. An experimental database consists of 150 sound tracking data was established by collecting three guided behaviors included rolled out of bed to drink water, go to the toilet and watch the fish jar from 5 subjects in two weeks. 476 meaningful sequences of sound events were explored and clustered into 32 quasi-activities. These quasi-activities were further concluded into 5 kinds of behavioral patterns for modeling living activities. The preliminary result shows the potential for modeling and proactively detecting abnormal behaviors or changes of the aged.

MPEG-2, H.263 and MPEG-4 are some example of video codec series used around the world. Different type video codec bring a different compression and quality values. h.264 /mpeg-4 part 10 or AVC (advance video coding) is the latest video codec/coding standard developed by ITU-T Video Coding Expert Group (VCEG) and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). It produces more straightforward and simple video coding design, with enhanced compression performance, and a high quality video. Original raw video (uncompressed video) require large and huge storage and it is important to compress the video data so it can be useful storage and transmission purpose. Good codec design will bring a higher quality of the video and the higher compression ratio. The purpose of this study is to optimize the current H.264 encoder for a more satisfying video quality. The image's peak signal noise ratio (PSNR) result obtained from both original H.264 and optimized H.264 video coding, together with its sizes is used as a comparison for the performance.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the run-up of internal solitary waves (ISWs) on steep uniform slopes in a two-layered fluid system with a free surface. A 12 m long wave flume, which incorporated a movable vertical gate for generating ISWs, was used in the experiments. A steep uniform slope was modeled at one end of the flume. In the present study we looked at internal waves with small and large amplitudes using a steep uniform slope (from one of Θ=30, 50, 60, 90, 120, and 130 deg) much longer than those previously published in the literature. Results collected from a wide range of experimental runs show that the run-up height depends on the planar slope, while the breaking depth is only antecedent to the amplitude of an ISW. The overall quantitative agreement with the linear feature aspects of the incident wave amplitude is encouraging. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.

Auditory perception is one of the most important functions for robotics applications. Microphone arrays are widely used for auditory perception in which the spatial structure of microphones is usually known. In practice, microphone array calibration can be tedious and other devices or means are required. The structure from sound (SFS) approach addresses the problem of simultaneously localizing a set of microphones and a set of acoustic events that provides a great flexibility to calibrate different setups of microphone arrays. However, the existing method does not take measurement uncertainty into account and does not provide uncertainty estimates of the SFS results. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic structure from sound (PSFS) approach using the unscented transform in which the uncertainties of the PSFS results are also available. In addition, a probabilistic sound source localization approach using the PSFS results is provided to improve sound source localization accuracy. The ample results of simulation and experiments using low-cost, off-the-shelf microphones demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed PSFS approach. © 2009 VSP.

We present a system consisting of a spiking cochlea chip and real-time event-based processing software that is able to discriminate between two sets of sounds based on their periodicity content. The periodicity measurements are computed from the spike timing information of asynchronous output spikes from the binaural spiking-cochlea chip. The chip consists of a matched pair of silicon cochlea with an address event interface for the output. Each section of the cochlea is modeled by a second-order low-pass filter followed by a simplified inner hair cell circuit and a spiking neuron circuit. We show discrimination results using the periodicity measure for 2 classes of sound and preliminary localization results based on a discriminated sound.

The knowledge acquisition bottleneck is a problem pertinent to the authoring of any intelligent tutoring system. Allowing students a broad scope of reasoning and solution representation whereby a wide range of plausible student solutions are accepted by the system, places additional burden on knowledge acquisition. In this paper we present a strategy to alleviate the burden of knowledge acquisition for building a tutoring system for medical problem-based learning (PBL). The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is deployed as domain ontology and information structure in the ontology is exploited to make intelligent inferences and expand the domain model. Using these inferences and expanded domain model, the tutoring system is able to accept a broader range of plausible student solutions that lie beyond the scope of explicitly encoded solutions. We describe the development of a tutoring system prototype and report the evaluation of system correctness in accepting such plausible solutions. The system evaluation indicates an average accuracy of 94.59% when compared against human domain experts, who agreed among themselves with a statistical agreement based on Pearson Correlation Coefficient of 0.48 and p < 0.05.

It is proposed in this session that the interactivity necessary in ubiquitous learning can be enhanced by the virtual tutor who mediates between the learner and the e-Learning contents. Arousing students' intellectual curiosity and raising their motivation to learn are the two great goals for e-Learning contents developers. It is supposed that the interaction in the communication between the teacher and his/her students in a regular classroom can be maintained in e-Learning with the help of Virtual Tutor, which appears on the learning contents in a timely fashion to give learners advice, encouragement, reminders, and such. The session includes discussions to develop such a system making use of the most updated technology as well as demonstrations of such a system which has been experimented at Department of Media Informatics. It is proved that the learning environment where human interactivity is essential can be reconstructed in terms of the proposed Virtual Tutor. This paper presentation includes demonstrations of QED as well as a discussion of the importance of interactivity in ubiquitous e-Learning. © 2008 IEEE.
