We propose a new feature selection procedure based on a combination of a pruning algorithm, Apriori mining techniques and fuzzy C-mean clustering. The feature selection algorithm is designed to mine on a multiresolution filter bank composed of rotationally invariant moments. The numerical experiments, with more than 10,000 images, demonstrate an accuracy increase of about 5% for a low noise, 15% for an average noise and 20% for a high-level noise.

This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

We develop a game theoretic model for studying when interconnected Internet Service Providers (ISP)s will decide to upgrade their networks. We are in particular interested in network upgrades to better accommodate real-time applications like voice over IP, but our game model is applicable to other types of upgrade. Achieving the full benefit from network upgrades requires that enough ISPs upgrade so that the users' traffic encounters only upgraded ISPs as it traverses the Internet. This situation gives rise to two important effects. One effect is that providers are reluctant to be first to invest in an upgrade when the full benefit of the upgrade cannot be achieved until their peers do the same. The second effect is that when a provider upgrades, the quality of the Internet as a whole increases, increasing demand, and thereby increasing revenue for all ISPs - including those who have not invested in the upgrade. This free-rider effect gives providers a temptation to not upgrade and instead enjoy the benefits of their peers upgrading. Our game model takes into account both effects, and finds sufficient conditions for it to be a Nash equilibrium the ISPs involved in the game to decide to upgrade. There are a large number of other equilibria for this game, so we also find stronger conditions under which the Nash equilibrium in which all providers upgrade is the unique Nash equilibrium. Another important feature of network upgrade costs is that they are declining as technology improves. We extend our original game model for upgrades to take into account declining upgrade costs and study what effects this has on the game's outcome.

The research field of Intelligent Service Robots, which has become more and more popular over the last years, covers a wide range of applications from climbing machines for cleaning large storefronts to robotic assistance for disabled or elderly people. When developing service robot software, it is a challenging problem to design the robot architecture by carefully considering user needs and requirements, implement robot application components based on the architecture, and integrate these components in a systematic and comprehensive way for maintainability and reusability. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to communicate among development teams and with others when many engineers from different teams participate in developing the service robot. To solve these problems, we applied the COMET design method, which uses the industry-standard UML notation, to developing the software of an intelligent service robot for the elderly, called T-Rot, under development at Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR). In this paper, we discuss our experiences with the project in which we successfully addressed these problems and developed the autonomous navigation system of the robot with the COMET/UML method. Despite many years of research in the area of human computer interaction, there are still remarkably few computing platforms in existence that permit remote collaboration over various software applications in an intense manner. Visualisation and interaction on a collaborative access table (ViCAT) is a new project whose aim is to allow intense collaboration between multiple users at multiple remotely located sites, as if the users were gathered around a physical table. This paper introduces the ViCAT design philosophy and how it addresses the mixed presence groupware concept, and then describes the relationship between the ViCAT project and current horizontal interactive human computer systems research.
