Teachers always want to know how much their students had learned in classes. The most convenient way to discover learning status is `test'. Each item on a test sheet always contains one or more concepts used to check whether a student really understands or not. Teachers can also find a student's misconceptions out via the concept relations stored in a test sheet. In order to make the diagnosis process simple, teachers always take concept maps as their test development and learning diagnosis tools. This paper implements a SCORM/IMS compliance online test and diagnosis system base on concept maps. In the system, it has more than 5000 members and generates real-time learning report for misconception diagnosis over 500 times monthly. The members are the third-year student at junior high school and come from different counties and cities all over the country. Currently, the system covers 11 courses such as Chinese, English, Physics, History, and Earth Science. It's obviously the system is useful for both teachers and students

The concept of intraepithelial neoplasm (IEN) as a near-obligate precursor of cancers has generated opportunities to examine drug or device intervention strategies that may reverse or retard the sometimes lengthy process of carcinogenesis. Chemopreventive agents with high therapeutic indices, well-monitored for efficacy and safety, are greatly needed, as is development of less invasive or minimally disruptive visualization and assessment methods to safely screen nominally healthy but at-risk patients, often for extended periods of time and at repeated intervals. Imaging devices, alone or in combination with anticancer drugs, may also provide novel interventions to treat or prevent precancer.

The neural networks are successfully applied to many applications in different domains. However, due to the results made by the neural networks are difficult to explain the decision process of neural networks is supposed as a black box. The explanation of reasoning is important to some applications such like credit approval application and medical diagnosing software. Therefore, the rule extraction algorithm is becoming more and more important in explaining the extracted rules from the neural networks. In this paper, a decompositional algorithm is analyzed and designed to extract rules from neural networks. The algorithm is simple but efficient;can reduce the extracted rules but improve the efficiency of the algorithm at the same time. Moreover, the algorithm is compared to the other two algorithms, M-of-N and Garcez, by solving the MONK's problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Artificial neural networks can be trained to predict outcomes in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This paper expands on past research and shows that neural networks trained by the maximum likelihood estimation criterion will approximate the `a posteriori probability' of NICU mortality. A gradient ascent method for the weight update of three-layer feed-forward neural networks was derived. The neural networks were trained on NICU data and the results were evaluated by performance measurement techniques, such as the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. The resulting models applied as mortality prognostic screening tools are presented

Many teachers and researchers put their teaching materials on the Internet for students to read in recent years. This sort of teaching materials could be seen as static because students can only follow the learning sequence made by teachers in advance. The goal of this paper is trying to develop a tool, K-Navi toolbar, to parse and rebuild teaching materials' hypermedia structures according to the concept relations and extracted rules automatically. K-Navi toolbar first uses the formal concept analysis (FCA) to parse the whole set of teaching materials and gets the embedded concept relations between each of two instructional documents; then uses the association rule methodology (ARM) to extract the rules from the concept lattices; and, finally rebuilds the hypermedia structure of the instructional document read by the student automatically. K-Navi toolbar adds related concept hyperlinks (or says links to other knowledge pieces) into the specific position on the instructional hypermedia document automatically when a student asks the document resource. A student then will be able to dig related knowledge pieces via these relevant hyperlinks.

This paper presents an ontology modeling and engineering approach to semantic description and integration of product development processes. Using OWL and OWL-S, the proposed method formalizes the underlying semantic representations of the product development process in domain object ontologies and the generic problem solving structures in domain task ontologies. Both the domain object and task ontologies are incorporated in the OWL-S based application service ontologies to facilitate the semantic process description and semantic service discovery, composition in the integration of product development processes. The approach has been applied to the development of ontological models for the consumer product development process in a pilot project of a national research program in Singapore namely the Integrated Manufacturing and Service Systems (IMSS).

This paper proposes a new high-speed reclosing operation method to improve the stability in power system with the fault current limiter. From an angular velocity, a field system voltage and a phase of the generator, the proposed operation method calculates the optimum reclosing time domain. The fault current limiter is used the reactance type or the resistive type. The examination was carried out using the Inst. of Electrical Engineers of Japan one-machine infinite bus system model in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The Impact Ver2.3 was used in the computer simulation.

Students in the web-based e-learning environment might have their own learning paths due to the structure of the world-wide web. Students can choose suitable learning materials according to their different learning style. There are many researches about learning diagnosis in distance education and the main objective of these researches is to improve the learning effects of students. This research proposes a diagnosis mechanism based on the Knowledge Map and implements a feedback system in order to provide the remedy teaching materials in sequence.

Prior to obtaining his doctorate Singleton was president of a small value-added dealer of accounting information systems and microcomputers for 11 years. Over the past decade Singleton has published numerous articles in journals related to information technology or accounting and has presented numerous papers at regional national and international conferences.

For electronic commerce (E-commerce) entities, security incidents continue to be the most significant risk (in terms of costs) associated with their businesses. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks have a debilitating effect on commercial transactions because commerce entities cannot do any legitimate business. Although it is impossible to completely stop all DDoS attacks, there are some tools to assist auditors and security professionals in the management of this critical threat. This article attempts to provide information, tools, and techniques that can minimize the DDoS risk, to the degree possible.
