Automated agents for electricity markets, social networks, and other distributed networks must repeatedly interact with other intelligent agents, often without observing associates' actions or payoffs (i.e., minimal information). Given this reality, our goal is to create algorithms that learn effectively in repeated games played with minimal information. As in other applications of machine learning, the success of a learning algorithm in repeated games depends on its learning bias. To better understand what learning biases are most successful, we analyze the learning biases of previously published multi-agent learning (MAL) algorithms. We then describe a new algorithm that adapts a successful learning bias from the literature to minimal information environments. Finally, we compare the performance of this algorithm with ten other algorithms in repeated games played with minimal information. We present a novel platform for noninvasive transmural cardiac electrophysiological imaging (NTCEI),which combines body-surface electrocardiographic data and image-derived anatomic data to compute subject-specific electrophysiological dynamics and electroanatomic substrates not only on heart surfaces but along the depth of the *** success on real-data experiments include 1) transmural scar quantification for patients withprevious history of myocardial infarction;2) trasnmural EP and scar imaging for patients with ventricular arrhythmia;and 3) transmural EP and scar imaging on porcine hearts with chronic *** experiments demonstrated the potentials in computing transmural EP anomalies using only noninvasive observations and without any conditionspecific knowledge a priori,which could not be achieved with either current EP mapping or structural imaging techniques *** will also briefly discuss development towards hardware realizations and clinical feasibility.

We report on focus group feedback regarding the services provided by existing education-related Digital Libraries (DL). Participants provided insight into how they seek educational resources online, and what they perceive to be the shortcomings of existing educational DLs. Along with useful content, social interactions were viewed as important supplements for educational DLs. Such interactions lead to both an online community and new forms of content such as reviews and ratings. Based on our analysis of the focus group feedback, we propose DL 2.0, the next generation of digital library, which integrates social knowledge with DL content. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

The idea of a Kripke semantics endowed with possibility/plausibility information is not new;in fact there are different approaches for that;see: [6], [13], [16], [19]. This paper follows the approach found in [6], but whereas [6] provides a fixed interpretation for connectives into [0,1] here we provide a characterization of a fuzzy semantics for connectives in such a way that the resulting fuzzy frames: K, T and D, are described precisely by the set of statements which also describes, respectively, the usual modal systems K, T and D. © 2011 IEEE.

MicroRNAs, by regulating the expression of hundreds of target genes, play critical roles in developmental biology and the etiology of numerous diseases, including cancer. As vast amounts of microRNA expression profile data are now publicly available, the integration of those data sets with gene expression profiles represents an extremely active area of life science research. However, the ability to conduct genome wide microRNA-mRNA (gene) integration currently requires sophisticated, high-end informatics tools, significant expertise in bioinformatics and computer science to carry out the complex integration analysis. In addition, increased computing infrastructure capabilities are essential in order to accommodate large data sets. In this study, we have extending BioVLAB cloud workbench to develop an environment for the integrated analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression data, named BioVLAB-MMIA. The workbench facilitates computations on the Amazon EC2 and S3 resources orchestrated by XBaya Workflow Suite. The advantages of BioVLAB-MMIA over the web-based MMIA system include: 1) readily expanded as new computational tools become available; 2) easily modifiable by re-configuring graphic icons in the workflow; 3) on-demand cloud computing resources can be used on an as needed basis; 4) distributed orchestration supports complex and long running workflows asynchronously.

The spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is an intrinsic spatial and temporal process. This paper reports the use of an agent-based approach to model the spread of SARS in Beijing and to examine the effectiveness of intervention strategies. A case study of simulation of SARS epidemic in Beijing, China in 2003 has been conducted by tracing close contacts of cases. Based on comparison of the simulation results with the actual cases, it was found that the agent-based approach can capture the SARS transmission from individual to individual and can demonstrate the public-health efforts in the control of SARS. © 2010 ACM.

As cultural institutions libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) share the mission to organize information objects, artifacts, and data for user access and enlightenment. While (LAMs) may follow different metadata standards and procedures to manage their collections and each type of institution has unique information organization and service concerns, digital technologies have enabled them to create, organize, preserve, and provide access to digital collections for global audience. Increasingly LAMs are converging in their information organization and management effort (LAM entries in *** ; Zorich, Waibel & Erway 2008 ), and the cultural silos created by libraries, archives, and museums are being integrated or rendered transparent for users (Calhoun 2006; Christenson and Tennant 2005; Uzwyshyn 2007). The proposed panel is designed to examine the convergence of information organization practices of libraries, archives, and museums; explore collaboration opportunities; and discuss the implications of LAM information organization practices for educating information professionals for these cultural heritage institutions. The panel consists of five speakers who will cover (1) the use of a faceted classification to organize museum artifacts and support website development; (2) metadata design and applications for organizing and preserving information objects for several types of cultural institutions; (3) the development of the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the involvement of libraries and non-library specialists in this effort; (4) analysis of descriptive standards used by cultural organizations and areas where libraries, archives, and museums can collaborate; and (5) collaboration among cultural institutions, especially in the technology area.

Predicting helix-helix interactions from residue contacts in membrane proteins

Motivation: Helix-helix interactions play a critical role in the structure assembly, stability and function of membrane proteins. On the molecular level, the interactions are mediated by one or more residue contacts. Although previous studies focused on helix-packing patterns and sequence motifs, few of them developed methods specifically for contact prediction. Results: We present a new hierarchical framework for contact prediction, with an application in membrane proteins. The hierarchical scheme consists of two levels: in the first level, contact residues are predicted from the sequence and their pairing relationships are further predicted in the second level. Statistical analyses on contact propensities are combined with other sequence and structural information for training the support vector machine classifiers. Evaluated on 52 protein chains using leave-one-out cross validation (LOOCV) and an independent test set of 14 protein chains, the two-level approach consistently improves the conventional direct approach in prediction accuracy, with 80% reduction of input for prediction. Furthermore, the predicted contacts are then used to infer interactions between pairs of helices. When at least three predicted contacts are required for an inferred interaction, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity are 56%, 40% and 89%, respectively. Our results demonstrate that a hierarchical framework can be applied to eliminate false positives (FP) while reducing computational complexity in predicting contacts. Together with the estimated contact propensities, this method can be used to gain insights into helix-packing in membrane proteins. © 2009 The Author(s).
