Height Modernization is a program in NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other new technologies to increase the accuracy of elevation measurements that comprise the vertical portion of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Height Modernization program within NGS is working with states to improve the height component of their survey control networks and related products. Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi (A&M-CC) was designated as the recipient of a grant under the program during the most recent Congressional cycle. In order to best coordinate and manage the activities funded by the grant, A&M-CC has established the Texas Spatial Reference Center (TxSRC). TxSRC will assist state agencies, private companies, public utilities and federal agencies in their efforts to improve the statewide network of control points as well as to support their use of GPS Continuing Operating Reference Stations (CORS). TxSRC plans to support the development of a statewide system of broadcasting Networked Transport of RTCM via Internet Protocol (NTRIP) for RTK-GPS. TxSRC will research methods of using NTRIP to locate and to collect information on geodetic monuments. NTRIP use is being considered as a way to overcome the limitations of RTK. Current RTK-GPS implementations require cellular or radio modern connections as the mechanism for receiving differential corrections. This infrastructure is not available in many remote and rural areas of Texas. It is proposed that a space-based (SB) RTK-GPS should be used to provide corrections in areas where no other corrections can be obtained without additional terrestrial infrastructure development. The proposed solution uses the Hughes Network System's Directway broadband internet satellite to send corrections to remote sites. Data would be received at the remote site and then locally broadcast to rover users. This SB-RTK-GPS will allow TxSRC to utilize the existing network of CORS sites

This paper describes the way human brain structures its memory. Human memory could be broadly classified into sensory buffer memory, short-term memory, and long term memory. The work involves an investigation on current human memory function and its association to information processing. Also investigated, is a model of the functioning of a part of the brain, called the cortico-hippocampal region that explains how the brain can learn to predict stimuli based on context cues. The work explores the cortico-hippocampal model and the possibility of an extension of this model. Its possible applications in the field of intelligent computer systems are also being considered in this paper.

A report on the progress of several major research and development projects in digital music libraries is presented. Digital music libraries provide enhanced access and functionality that facilitates scholarly research and education. The issue of integrating digital music library collections with interactive instructional applications is addressed.

As the Web continues to evolve, the sophistication of the programs that are employed in interacting with it will also increase in sophistication. Web agents, programs acting autonomously on some task, are already present in the form of spiders. Agents offer substantial benefits and hazards, and because of this, their development must involve not only attention to technical details, but also the ethical concerns relating to their resulting impact. These ethical concerns will differ for agents employed in the creation of a service and agents acting on behalf of a specific individual. An ethic is proposed that addresses both of these perspectives. The proposal is predicated on the assumption that agents are a reality on the Web, and that there are no reasonable means of preventing their proliferation.
The computational power of concurrent data types has been the focus of much recent research. Herlihy showed that such power may be measured by examining the type's ability to implement wait-free consensus. Jayanti...

Electronic meeting systems (EMS) have been introduced inside IBM in a cooperative effort between IBM and the University of Arizona to address the demands of an increasingly competitive and turbulent business environment. This paper presents and integrates the results of two field studies intended to evaluate the implications of electronic meeting system use at IBM. The first study focused on session process and outcome effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction at a single IBM site. The second study collected data on EMS tool use and facilitation approach within sessions at four IBM sites. The two studies are complementary in reflecting the impact of computer-based support on group process and outcome. Effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction are generally enhanced independent of type of activity supported or perspective, e.g., participant, facilitator, or session initiator. Facilitation training is a critical requirement for successful integration and application of electronic meeting system software and procedures in the group processes this paper addresses.
