Literacy, or the ability to read and write, is a crucial indicator of success in life and greater society. It is estimated that 85% of people in juvenile delinquent systems cannot adequately read or write, that more than half of those with substance abuse issues have complications in reading or writing and that two-thirds of those who do not complete high school lack proper literacy skills [1]. Furthermore, young children who do not possess reading skills matching grade level by the fourth grade are approximately 80% likely to not catch up at all [2]. Many may believe that in a developed country such as the United States, literacy fails to be an issue;however, this is a dangerous misunderstanding. Globally an estimated 1.19 trillion dollars are lost every year due to issues in literacy;in the USA, the loss is an estimated 300 billion [3]. To put it in more shocking terms, one in five American adults still fail to comprehend basic sentences [4]. Making matters worse, the only tools available now to correct a lack of reading and writing ability are found in expensive tutoring or other programs that oftentimes fail to be able to reach the required audience. In this paper, our team puts forward a new way of teaching English spelling and word recognitions to grade school students in the United States: Wordification. Wordification is a web application designed to teach English literacy using principles of linguistics applied to the orthographic and phonological properties of words in a manner not fully utilized previously in any computer-based teaching application. © 2023 IEEE.

In the evolving era of social robots, managing a swarm of autonomous agents to perform particular tasks has become essential for numerous industries. The task becomes more challenging for large-scale swarms and complex environments, which have not been fully explored yet. Therefore, this research introduces a methodology incorporating multiple coordinated robotic shepherds to effectively guide large-scale agent swarms in obstacle-laden terrains. The proposed framework commences with deploying an unsupervised machine-learning algorithm to categorise the swarm into clusters. Then, a shepherding algorithm with coordinated robotic shepherds drives the sub-swarms towards the goal. Also, a path planner based on an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to help robotic shepherds move in a way that minimises the dispersion of each sub-swarm and avoids potential hazards and obstructions. The proposed approach is tested on different scenarios, with the results showing a success rate of 100% in guiding swarms with sizes up to 3000 agents. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

As a field, computing’s deepest roots lie in liberal arts domains such as philosophy and linguistics. As new technologies rapidly expanded the field, the computer science curricula emerged. The current undergraduate areas of study, including computer science and software engineering, focus on preparing students for careers in the computing industry or academia. The “born digital” students of a modern liberal arts institution need a different, less technology-heavy, form of computing education to support their careers as future scientists, artists, or humanists. At our large, research-focused, US university, the College of Literature, Science, and the arts (LSA) charged a task force with defining the computing education needs for their students, chaired by the authors. We describe our process, findings and outcomes here with the aim of offering a reference template to faculty at universities that have experienced a similar growth to prominence of computer science in the undergraduate curriculum. The task force identified emergent themes of discovery, expression, and justice that we using to establish a new program, the program for computing in the arts and sciences (PCAS). Our themes and process may help other liberal arts and sciences programs organize the computing education needs in support of all their undergraduate students.

Problem Roulette (PR), an online study service at the University of Michigan, offers points-free formative practice to students preparing for examinations in introductory science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses. Using four years of PR data involving millions of problem attempts by thousands of students, we quantify the benefits of increased practice study volume in introductory physics. After conditioning the mean final grade on standardized (ACT and SAT) math test score, we analyze deviations based on student study volume. Practice Makes Better: Quantifying Grade Benefits of Study

Problem Roulette (PR), an online study service at the University of Michigan, offers points-free formative practice to students preparing for examinations in introductory STEM courses. Using four years of PR data involving millions of problem attempts by thousands of students, we quantify benefits of increased practice study volume in introductory physics. After conditioning mean final grade on standardized (ACT/SAT) math test score, we analyze deviations based on student study volume. We find a strong effect;mean course grade rises quadratically with the logarithm of the total number of PR questions encountered over the term (NQ,tot), with an overall gain of 0.77 ±0.12 grade points between 1 Q,tot Q,tot surely correlates with other study habits, the benefits of increased study in general still hold. A model for final grade using test score and study volume largely accounts for demographic stratification, including by sex, parental education level, number of parents at home, nationality / underrepresented minority status, and regional income level, with two significant exceptions: students whose parents did not earn a college degree, who earn −0.27 ±0.04 grade points (6.1σ) below expectations and underrepresented minority students at −0.14 ±0.04 points (3.6σ). Residual scatter in final grade remains comparable to the maximal study gains, implying that the model is far from deterministic: individual variation trumps mean trends. Our findings can help motivate students to study more and help teachers to identify which types of students may especially need such encouragement. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

The Human-Centered Internet of Things(HC-IoT)is fast becoming a hotbed of security and privacy *** users can establish a common session key through a trusted server over an open communication channel using a three-party authenticated key *** of the early authenticated key agreement systems relied on pairing,hashing,or modular exponentiation processes that are computationally intensive and *** order to address this problem,this paper offers a new three-party authenticated key agreement technique based on fractional chaotic *** new scheme uses fractional chaotic maps and supports the dynamic sensing of HC-IoT devices in the network architecture without a password *** projected security scheme utilized a hash function,which works well for the resource-limited HC-IoT *** results show that our new technique is resistant to password guessing attacks since it does not use a ***,our approach provides users with comprehensive privacy protection,ensuring that a user forgery attack causes no ***,our new technique offers better security features than the techniques currently available in the literature.

Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for Prediction and Diagnosis of Leptospirosis: Systematic Literature Review

Background Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira bacteria, continues to pose significant public health risks, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Objective This systematic review aimed to evaluate the application of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques in predicting and diagnosing leptospirosis, focusing on the most used algorithms, validation methods, data types, and performance metrics. Methods Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, Checklist for Critical Appraisal and Data Extraction for Systematic Reviews of Prediction Modelling Studies (CHARMS), and Prediction model Risk of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST) tools, we conducted a comprehensive review of studies applying ML and DL models for leptospirosis detection and prediction, examining algorithm performance, data sources, and validation approaches. Results Out of a total of 374 articles screened, 17 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, representing approximately 4.5% of the initial pool. The review identified frequent use of algorithms such as support vector machines, artificial neural networks, decision trees, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Among the included studies, 88% (15/17) used traditional ML methods, and 24% (4/17) used DL techniques. Several models demonstrated high predictive performance, with reported accuracy rates ranging from 80% to 98%, notably with the U-Net CNN achieving 98.02% accuracy. However, public datasets were underused, with only 35% (6/17) of studies incorporating publicly available data sources; the majority (65%, 11/17) relied primarily on private datasets from hospitals, clinical records, or regional surveillance systems. Conclusions ML and DL techniques demonstrate potential for improving leptospirosis prediction and diagnosis, but future research should focus on using larger, more diverse datasets, adopting transfer learning strategies, and integratin
