Confronting the severe health threats and environmental impacts of Cr(Ⅵ) in aquatic environments demands innovative and effective remediation approaches. In this study, Graphene oxide(GO)-decorated poly(dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate)(PDMAEMA) brush nanocomposites(GOP1, GOP2, GOP3, and GOP4) were fabricated using atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) by the “graft from” *** resulting nanocomposites were utilized for removing Cr(Ⅵ) with good adsorption performance due to the electrostatic interaction of protonated nitrogen groups in the brush chains with negatively charged particles in the solution. The kinetic model of pseudo-second-order best represented the contaminants' adsorption characteristics. The Weber-Morris model further indicated that surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion mechanisms primarily controlled the adsorption procedure. Additionally, the Langmuir and Temkin isotherm models were found to most accurately represent the adsorption characteristics of the pollutants on the nanocomposites, and GOP4 can achieve the maximum adsorption capacity of 164.4 mg·g^(-1). The adsorbents' capacity maintains above 85% after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. The nanocomposites in this study demonstrate promising potential for eliminating Cr(Ⅵ) from aqueous solutions.

Modeling Syngas Fermentation for Ethanol Production under Fluctuating Inlet Gas Composition

Syngas fermentation effectively converts CO, H2, and CO2 into valuable biofuels and chemicals. This study investigated the effects of fluctuating syngas composition and kLa as the critical operational parameters on microbial fermentation performance, with a focus on ethanol, acetic acid, and biomass production. Modeling results demonstrated that increasing CO concentration significantly enhanced metabolite production, whereas increases in H2 and CO2 concentrations yielded limited improvements. The findings revealed that a higher H2/CO ratio tent to reduce metabolite production, while a higher CO/CO2 ratio significantly improved fermentation outcomes. Additionally, higher kLa values were observed to promote metabolite production, though diminishing returns were evident at very high kLa levels. Further study on the impact of syngas composition disturbances (±5% to ±20%) and fluctuation durations (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 days) indicated that larger disturbances and longer fluctuation durations led to greater deviations in metabolite concentrations, with ethanol being the most sensitive, followed by acetic acid and biomass. Despite these fluctuations, the microbial system displayed resilience, stabilizing once gas composition returned to normal levels. These insights underscored the adaptability and robustness of syngas fermentation systems, making them viable for industrial applications where gas composition variability is inevitable. The ability to tolerate moderate fluctuations offers opportunities to reduce gas pretreatment costs and process syngas from diverse sources, benefiting industries such as steel manufacturing, oil refining, and biomass gasification. AutoTemplate: enhancing chemical reaction datasets for machine learning applications in organic chemistry

Abstract: This paper presents AutoTemplate, an innovative data preprocessing protocol, addressing the crucial need for high-quality chemical reaction datasets in the realm of machine learning applications in organic chemistry. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have expanded the application of machine learning in chemistry, particularly in yield prediction, retrosynthesis, and reaction condition prediction. However, the effectiveness of these models hinges on the integrity of chemical reaction datasets, which are often plagued by inconsistencies like missing reactants, incorrect atom mappings, and outright erroneous reactions. AutoTemplate introduces a two-stage approach to refine these datasets. The first stage involves extracting meaningful reaction transformation rules and formulating generic reaction templates using a simplified SMARTS representation. This simplification broadens the applicability of templates across various chemical reactions. The second stage is template-guided reaction curation, where these templates are systematically applied to validate and correct the reaction data. This process effectively amends missing reactant information, rectifies atom-mapping errors, and eliminates incorrect data entries. A standout feature of AutoTemplate is its capability to concurrently identify and correct false chemical reactions. It operates on the premise that most reactions in datasets are accurate, using these as templates to guide the correction of flawed entries. The protocol demonstrates its efficacy across a range of chemical reactions, significantly enhancing dataset quality. This advancement provides a more robust foundation for developing reliable machine learning models in chemistry, thereby improving the accuracy of forward and retrosynthetic predictions. Rotary Algae Biofilm Reactor (RABR) using microalgae Chlorella sp. for tofu wastewater treatment

Indonesia was known to be dominated by the household-scale tofu industry, with limited funds to treat the tofu wastewater produced. Therefore, the producers choose to directly discharge the tofu wastewater to a ditch or other water body without appropriate treatment. Tofu wastewater can pollute the aquatic environment due to its content, consisting of organic compounds and high nutrients. Utilization of tofu wastewater as a source of nutrients to support the growth of microorganisms such as the microalgae (Chlorella sp.) can be an alternative to the problem of tofu wastewater using Rotary Algae Biofilm Reactor (RABR) technology. This study aims to determine the growth rate of microalgae and the removal of COD and NH3 parameters by cultivating Chlorella sp. On a medium with various treatments of tofu wastewater concentration, namely 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%, and contact time within (0, 1, 3, and 5 days). The results showed that in the treatment of 40% tofu wastewater concentration on day 5, the highest COD and NH3 removal efficiencies were 75.88% and 80.45%, respectively, with the total density of suspended and attached cells of Chlorella sp. of 3.99 × 106 cells/mL. © 2023

Heavy metals are the most hazardous water pollutants, with severe health and environmental consequences. Among these, mercuric (Hg²⁺) ions are known to cause detrimental health issues in both humans and aquatic life. Due to this, several analytical techniques have been devised to detect and quantify the amount of this ion. However, most of these require advanced instrumentation, prolonged analysis time, and sample preparation. In this study, a low-cost and highly reusable colorimetric probe was developed by grafting porphyrin to poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheets using an oxazoline polymer as covalent adhesive. Upon exposure to trace amounts of Hg²⁺ in solution, the fabricated material visually transitioned from faint brownish pink to green by the complexation mechanism. Additionally, the transparency of this probe allowed the quantitative spectrophotometric determination of the Hg²⁺ concentration in aqueous samples. It was also shown that the material is highly stable, which can be reused for more than 50 times without significant decline in its performance, hence, making it suitable for the onsite monitoring of mercuric ion contamination in different bodies of water. © 2024 The Authors.
